Team. They have worked tirelessly to support students and families in their roles as relieving Deputy Principals. Both Ms Clifford and Ms Lawson now move back to their substantive positions of Head Teacher Administration and Head Teacher Wellbeing respectively. Community Liaison Figtree High School is appointing a teacher to act as Community Liaison in 2019. This 3 day/week role will greatly support our school by working with all Figtree HS staff, our Community of Schools staff and members of the wider school community to help shape, promote and deliver a number of new, whole school teaching and learning projects. This role also involves planning events for next year’s school 50 Year Anniversary. Congratulations to Karin Harlor who was selected by a panel, following the application and interview process. Two Shining Stars Ellie Rada from Year 10 was selected to attend the Secretary for a Day Conference at the Department of Education’s, State Office. Ellie shadowed David Tonge who is the Relieving Executive Director of Projects, School Infrastructure. On Monday 6 August, Ellie travelled to Sydney CBD to attend a number of meetings, one of those being a round table discussion with the Secretary of Education, Mark Scott. On Tuesday 7 August, Ellie spent the day in team building activities and then took on a leadership role, presenting to a team of Principals and other NSW Education employees.

Maria Ljuboja, also from year 10, was chosen to shadow Bill Field - our local Director, Educational Leadership - as a part of the Director for a Day program. Maria and Bill attended two of our local community schools, Mt Kembla Public School and Unanderra Public School. Together they analysed data, searching for evidence of ways to support these schools across many different aspects. They finished the day off their productive day with a delicious lunch.

Deputy Principal Report Years 7, 9 and 11

Welcome back to our final term of the year. This term will be a very busy time for students, with a range of assessments in each subject. It is essential that students keep themselves well organised and use a student diary (electronic or hard copy) to ensure they are well prepared for assessment tasks. I have resumed my responsibilities for Year 11 students this term and I am excited to be working with these students and their parents/carers again. This term is always an exciting time for Year 11 students as they commence their HSC courses and begin preparing for the 12 months ahead. I have been speaking with a number of Year 11 students regarding their curriculum pattern for their HSC. If a student wants to change their curriculum pattern, they must complete the appropriate green or yellow subject change form. This form is essential to ensure that any change in a student’s curriculum pattern will still enable the student to meet the requirements for the award of a Higher School Certificate and to also ensure that any student who wants to gain an ATAR is eligible for one with their new curriculum pattern. While we understand that this documentation takes time to process, it is crucial for students to have this finalised prior to making any change to their timetable. Students who have changed their curriculum pattern and are only studying 10 units will now have a study period in place of the subject they have discontinued. Students need to use this time productively, accessing the senior study or library to continue with their studies in their other subjects. With the warmer weather upon us, we have reminded students on assembly about the importance of sun protection and hydration during the school day, with water being the best fluid for students to drink on hot days. Students are reminded to maintain their commitment to being on time to school every day. Punctuality is an important employability attribute, along with wearing the correct school uniform. We thank our parents/ carers for their support in this area. Ms Ellie Donovan Deputy Principal

Deputy Principal Report Years 8, 10 and 12

I am excited to be returning to Figtree High after being at CESE for just over 12 months. I have been travelling the state developing and presenting professional learning on literacy and numeracy – in particular, NAPLAN transitioning to online – for teachers. The experience has enabled me to return to Figtree High School with a greater understanding of interpreting literacy and numeracy data to increase student outcomes. Over the last 3 weeks, I have been warmly welcomed by students, parents and teachers back to the Figtree community. Congratulations to Year 12 students who are currently completing their HSC. They have had excellent attendance. The Presiding Officer from NESA has commented on their diligence and focussed attitude towards their examinations. The last day for the HSC at FHS is Thursday 8 November 2018. Students are expected to attend school on Tuesday 13 November 2018 from 8:50am to 11:30am to complete sign out. They need to return all school resources including books and pay any outstanding fees. After completing the process, they will be issued them with their Year 12 Formal ticket. The Year 12 formal is at the Novotel from 6pm to 10:30pm on Thursday 15 November. Year 10 students are busy at the moment completing their assessments for the RoSA. They are showing an excellent level of engagement to ensure they meet the requirements of the RoSA during these weeks. During this important but stressful time they should

• Have a study timetable – their Year Adviser can assist if they do not know how to develop one.

• Ensure they have at least 8 hours of sleep each night – without devices turned on

• Eat a healthy breakfast each day so that they have the energy to complete their best work

• Participate in regular physical exercise • Spend time with family and friends.

Year 8 have had a brilliant start to the term. Their Year Advisers have stated that students are focused on their learning in classes and behaving in a manner that is supportive of our core values of “Respect, Safety and Learning”. Ms Trish Morgan Deputy Principal

Wellbeing Report Figtree Lions Club Tuesday 16 October I attend the Figtree Lions Club meeting to thank the club for their support of Figtree High School. Last year Figtree Lions Club gave the school $2000 to support students to achieve their goals. The Wellbeing team identified 3 students to receive the Figtree Lions Club Youth Development awards. The three students used their scholarships in various ways and at the meeting I informed the club as to what the students used the money for. Figtree High School is extremely grateful for the Lions Club support and I am extremely happy to announce that the Figtree Lions Club will again support the school in 2019 with Youth Development awards.

Anti-bullying Workshop On Wednesday 31 October Ellie Rada (Year 10) and Mrs Lawson attend 2018 Anti-Bullying Regional Workshop in Wagga Wagga. INVICTUS GAMES On the 22 October, 28 students attended the Invictus Games at Homebush. The students participated in wheelchair basketball, watched the indoor rowing and listened to motivational speaker Lori Nicholson. This was an inspiring day as we were able to recognise the efforts of those that have served their country.

We have also been discussing the Invictus Games in our PDHPE classes. The students have been learning the background of the Invictus games and what it means to the athletes. We have been particularly looking at the areas of resilience, inclusion and service. Students listened to the official Invictus song and discussed the Invictus poem. They then wrote their own piece of poetry.

Walking in the dead of night Shooting aimlessly at those we fight Picking up my fallen friends Until the night ends Wounded from a hit to the head Now I lie in a hospital bed I may be lying in the sheets But my spirits flying in the streets I have done my country proud Now I am surrounded by a crowd There is no longer any hate I am the master of my fate Written by Jed, Liam, Hugh and Travis I can chose what I want to be At the back of me the dogs they bite In the dark of the night I can’t see Like a deer in the headlights They can’t bring me down I’m not conquerable I’m not going to let them keep me bound I am and always will be unstoppable Written by Sharnie SHINE PROGRAM GRADUATION Congratulations to the girls who recently completed the Shine Program.
