Ore Bode Law LLB

I loved the idea of studying at a city campus; the environment was so different to high school and college. Also, I loved the way the course at the School of Law was structured. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on students’ understanding, which aided the transition from A-levels to university.

Since first year I have been a part of the Manchester University Law Society (MULS) and was communications secretary in my second year. Being a part of the MULS was a great way to make some amazing friends and become better acquainted with the School of Law. I was also a part of the Advocacy and Mooting Society and participated in a mini moot during the first year. This was a great way to develop my public speaking skills.

This year I am student representative for the third year LLB Law cohort and president of the newly founded Society of Current Affairs and Commercial Awareness. I really recommend joining a society because it will help you to make new friends and meet people who share the same interests as you.

Elizabeth SmithCriminology BA I chose to study criminology because I am fascinated with all things relating to crime. After studying law at A-Level I was left wanting more but knew I wanted to pursue the criminal elements of the next course I studied.

Throughout the course we have had many guest speakers visit from different professions such as probation, social services, prison and the police. I particularly enjoyed guest speaker Peter Fahy, former Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police. It was really inspiring to hear him discuss his opinions on the current state of the police force and defending the counter terrorism prevent policy he advocated throughout his time in the force.

I took the opportunity to do the Q-Step Internship the University offers for select programmes. My internship was seven weeks over summer before starting my third year at Greater Manchester Police, working as part of the Honour Based Violence team as a data analyst. Following my internship, and studying the Data Analyst and Research Methods units the course offers, I have gained a really good understanding of the importance of data and just how many job opportunities there are in this field.

The facilities and staff at the School of Law are excellent and really make studying the course all the more enjoyable.

Any concerns or queries can be immediately resolved by the friendly lecturers and teaching support staff, and the numerous study and IT facilities mean that there are plenty of places around campus to study. The lecturers are some of the best in their fields, so it’s amazing that we have the chance to be taught by and learn from these distinguished academics.

I’ve also had the opportunity to improve the experience for current and future students by raising awareness of all of the employability events and skills sessions which the School offers. I have achieved this through my roles as Law with Criminology rep and employability ambassador.

Studying at Manchester has given me a wide range of interview, problem solving and leadership skills, that will really benefit me in the workplace. After I graduate, I will pursue a career in crime and analytics management by joining a graduate programme for a global retailer based near London.

Osarhiere Akpata Law with Politics LLB

The University of Manchester’s School of Law has a great reputation, so for me, studying Law with Politics was the perfect choice.

The city’s vibrant and very student friendly. Everything’s close together and the transport system makes it really easy to visit places in and around the city, as well as further out. The international student community is definitely one of the most diverse in the UK, making Manchester a really interesting place to live. There are plenty of sports activities and volunteering opportunities to get involved with in your spare time. There’s also a society for most things and joining the Manchester University Law Society has been a nice way for me to meet new people on the course as well as get careers advice. The social activities hosted by the society are really good fun, especially the annual Law Ball.

The School is always keen to support me by providing advice and support, pastoral care and skills development. I’ve really enjoyed working in the Legal Advice Centre; it’s given me the chance to put some of my studying into practice and, more importantly, help other people and prepare me for my future career.

Triin SoberLaw with Politics LLB The University of Manchester and the School of Law have a great reputation, are internationally renowned and draw talented students from all over the world.

The diversity of the student body, their different views and experiences is certainly one of Manchester’s distinctive features. I loved the mix of student and city life. There were student focused areas giving the feelof a campus university, but at the same time the city with its opportunities is right on the doorstep.

I joined the Data Assurance practice of PwC Manchester on their graduate scheme. In 2015 I re-located to Hong Kong and I am currently working as a consultant in PwC Hong Kong’s Risk Assurance department focusing mainly on data analytics, data privacy and regulatory compliance related work. Travelling internationally has always been an interest and a professional goal of mine. Studying at the School of Law gave me a solid foundation for entering the work place in terms of both practical skills and also having the confidence and experience of solving complex issues. This helped me to join a multi-national firm and achieve my goal of gaining international experience.

I joined PwC in a field that was of interest to me butnot directly related to the degree I’d studied. The broad experience I gained at Manchester, in particular combining two different degree disciplines with volunteering and a part time job, gave me the confidence and ability to take advantage of any opportunities that came my way.

The School of Law has great links with the legal community. There were lots of opportunities to attend career fairs and experience days in order to find out more about career destinations, both in the legal profession and outside it. There were also a lot of resources available on the preparation side when it came to job applications such as interview practice and chatting to recent graduates.

Throughout your studies at Manchester, we offer a range of support and events to help you to consider and research your options.

The School of Law offers a specialist careers and employability programme with workshops each week delivered by in-house specialists and practitioners including The Business of Law, Civil Procedure, Introduction to the Commercial Application of Law, CV application support, training contract application advice, mock interviews, Special Constabulary, Meet the Professionals, and Making Contacts and Networking.

LawYou will benefit from unique training, networking and work-based opportunities to build a truly successful career. If you want to practise as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales, our LLB degrees enable you to study the foundational subjects required to qualify for exemptions at the next stage in your training.

After graduation, you will embark on further vocational training: either the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and a training contract to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and a pupillage to become a barrister.

Careers andemployability

CriminologyCriminology is a diverse and fascinating subject, and the transferrable skills that you develop during your time with us will set you up for a numberof paths you may not even have considered. If you plan to pursue a career in Criminology and areas related to criminal justice, our extensive Criminology Careers Programme will help.

Working at the Legal Advice Centre has helped me gain a diverse insight into law, which has helped me find a specialisationthat suits my interests.

The training and the practical skills development has been crucial, along with the support of the careers service. My experience has provided me with a competitive edge for interviews and application responses and I can now turn my ambitions into a reality.

I chose to study at Manchester because of the School’s reputation and links with leading law firms. I’ve been involved with the Advocacy and Mooting Society and Volleyball Society amongst others, which has given me a rounded experience of university life. Participating in the final of a mooting competition and appearing before Lord Wilson in the UK Supreme Courtin London, was an amazing highlight for meduring my study.

The School of Law has prepared and supported me to follow my ambitions and undertake further legal training to secure a pupillage or training contract.

Legal Advice CentresBoth Law and Criminology students are offered the opportunity to work in one of the School of Law’s award-winning Legal Advice Centres.

Indunee SeneviratneUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

I was excited by the idea of studying in the USA as law in the USA is studied at postgraduate degree level. My thought was to try and challenge myself and improve my academic focus. North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a highly respected and prestigious institution; it is one of the top public universities in the USA. I was intriguedto learn about the real America behind the headlines, with its complex mixture of cultures and social, economic and politicalissues that I wished to explore first hand.

I mostly enjoyed having my mind opened in surprising ways every day.It is just wonderful meeting new people and learning about the many and varied issues at the heart of tensions in America. I also adored experiencing the forces that unite people, such as a love of sport, social justice and hearty meals. Academically, the intense ‘Socratic method’ teaching style is both terrifying and rewarding, especially in the smaller classes where student engagement is at its highest. Overall I found this a perfect environment to learn how to cope with my work load, deadlines and demand for spontaneous and creative thinking.

Marc WhittleThe University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

I wanted to go to a country which had a culture completely different to Manchester, so I chose Hong Kong. It’s an amazing place; the sheer amount of variety was great. In a day you could eat dim sum in a tiny restaurant in the middle of the city, hike up one of Hong Kong’s many mountains, and end with a swim at a sandy beach. There aren’t many places in the worldwhere so much is available in one place.

The experience of moving abroad to somewhere where you have few connections and adjusting to a new and totally different life was a real highlight. The atmosphere is verypositive with all other students wanting to make the mostof their time abroad. It is a unique experience.

Studying abroad has helped me develop so many transferable skills, from confidence to perseverance, to organisation and resilience. This experience has given me the confidenceto adjust to new cultures and seek out new opportunities.
