TheSchoolofLibraryandInformationScienceofferstheBachelorofScienceinInformationScience(BSIS).YouwillhavetocompleteallrequirementsfortheInformationScienceprogramtograduate.Aminimumof121hoursofcreditisrequiredforthedegree.

SeetheUSCUndergraduateBulletinatbulletin.sc.eduforinformationconcerningrequirements.ThebulletinisabindingdocumentformajorandtheyearyouenteredUSC.Undergraduatestudentshaveamaximumofeightyears,inclusiveandcontinuous,inwhichtoclaimtherightsofaspecificbulletin.

Youareresponsibleforunderstandingthedegreerequirementsinyourmajor.AnyexceptionstothoserequirementsmustberequestedthroughapetitionprocessthatcanbeinitiatedthroughtheBSISadvisor.

COURSEWORKELIGIBLEFORTRANSFERCONSIDERATION:IfyoutransferintotheschoolfromanotherinstitutionoryouhavehighschooltransfercreditfromsuchprogramsasAPorIBthen,youwillhaveyourpreviousworkevaluatedbyUSCAdmissionsofficeuntilacceptanceandthenUSCRegistrar’sOfficeafteracceptanceintotheUniversity.ThisworkwillbeevaluatedunderthetermsofgeneralUSCpolicies.WherepossibleUSCequivalentswillbedeterminedforacademiccoursesfromotherinstitutions.SometimesthereisnoequivalentandsomeclassescannotbeusedtowardearningtheInformationSciencedegreeatUSC.

Wherepossible,informationsciencecoursesfromotherinstitutionswillbeequatedtoSLISequivalentsandbeusedintheprogramofstudy.TransferstudentsfromotherinstitutionsmusttakeatleasthalfoftheInformationSciencecourseworkinresidenceattheUniversityofSouthCarolina,Columbia.RequiredInformationSciencecoursestakenfromotherschoolsmustbefromaccreditedschools.Nomorethan12semesterhoursofrequiredInformationSciencecoursesfromotherschoolsmaybeappliedtowardtheBSISdegree.

ADVANCEDSTANDING1.Ifyoumakesatisfactoryscores,asdeterminedbytheUSCTestingOffices(803)777-2780,onAdvancedPlacement(AP)testsinhighschoolyoumayreceivecredit.

2.CertainCollegeLevelExaminationProgram(CLEP)scoresmayalsobeacceptedascredit,asdeterminedbytheUSCTestingOffice.

3.Youmightalsoobtaincreditbyexaminationinareaswhereyoumayhavecompetency.Thisisdonebypayingafeeandmakingasatisfactoryscoreonanexamination.Generally,youcannotplaceoutofskillscoursesbyusingcreditbyexam.Also,youcanhavenopriorenrollmenthistoryinthesameorasimilarcourse.ConsulttheUndergraduateAdviserformoreinformation.

4.Nocreditisgivenfor“lifeexperience”orContinuingEducationUnits(CEUs).

FOREIGNLANGUAGEIfyouaretransferringtotheUniversityofSouthCarolina,youmustdemonstrateforeignlanguageskillsbyscoringappropriatelyontheproficiencytest.

Youneedtodemonstrateinoneforeignlanguagetheabilitytocomprehendthetopicandmainideasinwrittenand,withtheexceptionofLatinandAncientGreek,spokentextsonfamiliarsubjects.Thisabilitycanbedemonstratedbyachievingascoreof2onaUSCforeignlanguagetest.ThosefailingtodosomustsatisfactorilycompletethefirsttwoclasssequenceforstudyinaforeignlanguagetocompletetheBSISdegree.

TRANSIENTCOURSESATOTHERINSTITUTIONS1.Ifyouareafullyadmittedinformationsciencestudentingoodstanding(i.e.,notonprobationorsuspension)andhaveaUSCandcollegiateGPAof2.0orhigherandwishtotakecoursesatother

institutions,youmustreceiveadvancepermission.Aminimumgradeof“C”isrequiredforacoursetotransfer.Youmaytakenomorethan18hoursasatransientstudent.

2.Youmustcompleteyourlast30hoursinresidenceandshouldapplytotakecourseworkelsewherebeforeyouattainseniorstanding(90hoursearned).

3.Youshouldrequesttransientinformation(i.e.coursedescriptionsandscheduledofferings)fromtheotherinstitutionbeforetheadvisementperiod.Permissionshouldbeobtainedduringtheregularadvisementperiod.Youwillneedasignedspecialenrollmentregistrationform.

4.Normally,informationsciencecoursesmaynotbetakenatnon-USCinstitutions.

5.Thebulletinstatesthat“credit...willnotbeacceptedfortransferifthestudenthaspreviouslybeenenrolledinanequivalentcourseintheuniversity.”

6.Thebulletinstates“creditforothercourseswillbeacceptedonlyundertheconditionsthateachcoursehasbeenapprovedinadvancebytheheadofthedepartmentorthedeanofthecollege.”However,SLISrequiresapprovalbyyouradviser,andthedirectorofStudentServiceswillaskfortheSLISdirector’sconsideration.

7.Whentransientpermissionformshavebeenapprovedandsigned,youcanregisterforthecourse.Whenthecourseworkiscompleted,youmustrequestthatanofficialtranscriptbemailedto:

LOWERDIVISIONLowerDivisionstudentsmaybefreshmen,sophomoresandotherstudentswhohavenotcompletedUpperDivisionentrancerequirements.Youmayenrollin200-,and300-levelSLIScoursesaslongasyouhavemetallprerequisites,whichcanbefoundintheUSCUndergraduateBulletin.YouwillNOTbeeligibletoenrollinupperdivisionSLIScourses,whicharedefinedas400-levelcourseswiththeexceptionofSLIS401.

UPPERDIVISIONAdmissiontothisdivisionisbasedupon:

• Aminimum2.50cumulativeUSCandcollegiateGPA• CompletionofSLIS201,SLIS202,andSLIS301withgradesof“C”orhigher• Completionof60ormoresemesterhours• Completionoftheforeignlanguagerequirement• Selectionofminororapprovedplanofstudybeforeadmissiontoupperdivision

Transcriptsshouldnotbehandledbyyou,norshouldtheybemailedtotheSchoolofLibraryandInformationScience.Ifthisoccurs,thetranscriptwillbeconsideredunofficialandinvalid.

ACADEMICSTANDINGGoodStanding:IfyoumaintainaUSCandcollegiateGPAof2.50,youareconsideredin“goodstanding”intheschool.

Probation:IfyoudonotmaintainaUSCandcollegiateGPAof2.50youwillbeplacedonacademicprobationuntilyourUSCandcollegiateGPAare2.50orhigher.YouwillbepermittedtoremaininSLISwhileonprobationforonlyonesemester.Youmustmeetallprobationaryrequirementsduringthesemesterthatyouareonprobation.YouwillreceivedetailedinstructionsfromtheOfficeofStudentServices.IfyoudonotimproveyourGPAattheendoftheprobationperiodyoumaybeaskedtoleavetheschoolandfindanothermajoratUSC.

Suspension:Ifyoufallbelowa2.00GPAyouwillbesuspendedbytheuniversity.AfullexplanationoftheuniversitysuspensionpolicyisshowninthecurrentUSCUndergraduateBulletin.TheUniversityofSouthCarolinahasaspecificpolicyregardingsuspensionandreadmission.

Illness/DeathinFamily:Incaseofdeathofafamilymemberorstudentillnessofaweekormoreinduration,theStudentAffairsOffice(777-4172)willwriteyourprofessorsandacademicadvisertoalertthem.Thisdoesnotconstituteanexcusedabsence.Allprofessorsmaynotacceptstudentdocumentationtowaiveclassattendanceforexcusedabsences,butsomewill.Anappropriateproofofillnessisasigneddoctor’sstatementonletterhead.Inthecaseofadeathinthefamily,proofisrequiredinrequestsforanextenuatingcircumstancewithdrawal.

IfyouareoutoftheUSCsystemformorethanthreeyears,youmustclaimthebulletininforceatthetimeofyourreturnandwillbesubjecttoitscurricularrequirements.

READMISSION1.IfyouenrolledasanInformationSciencemajor,butmissedafullsemesterormore,youmustapplyforreadmissiontotheuniversityandSLIS.Ifyouhavelowerthana2.50USCand/orcollegiateGPA,youarenoteligibleforreadmissiontotheSchoolofLibraryandInformationScience.Call(803)777-7700tocontacttheAdmissionsOffice.

2.Ifyouaresuspendedbytheuniversity,youmaynotreturntotheSLISforthenextfullsemesterorsummerschool(seeBulletinfordetails).Whileonsuspension,studentsmaynotattemptcourseworkatanyinstitution.YoumaysubsequentlyapplyforreinstatementtoSLISonlythroughaformalpetitionprocess.Thepetitionprocessdoesnotguaranteereadmission.Contactyouradvisorforthepetitionform.

COURSELOAD1.Thenormalcourseloadinafullsemester(fallorspring)is15to18semesterhours.Youarestronglyadvisednottoattempt18hoursuntilyouhavesuccessfullycompletedyourfreshmanyear.Additionalhoursbeyond18willbeapprovedonlyifyouhaveaminimum3.00GPAonallworkcompletedduringthepreviousfullsemester.Ifyouwanttotakemorethan18hoursofcoursework,youmustmakearequesttothedirectorofStudentServicesafteryourprevioussemesterfinalgradesareonfileintheRegistrar’sOffice.

highlyencourageyoutocontactthatparticularstudentservicesofficetofindoutwhennon-majorsand

GraduationWhenyousubmityourgraduationapplicationelectronicallyduringthefirsttwoweeksofyourlastsemester,wewillidentifyanyproblemsandinformyouofnecessarycorrections,iftimeallows.Ifyouareathird-yearstudent,asktheadvisertodoa“seniorcheck”beforeyouregisterforeachofyourtwolastsemesters.YouwillbetentativelyclearedordisapprovedbytheRegistrar’sposteddateifcompleteformsaresubmittedontime.Ifyouchangeyourscheduleafterhavingbeententativelycleared,youmustnotifytheOfficeofStudentServicesandbeclearedagain.Youwillbeclearedforfinalapprovalonlyafterfinalgradesareavailablefollowingthecommencementceremony.TheOfficeofStudentServiceswillcontactstudentswhohavebarrierstograduationandhelpthemresolvethose.Ifnoresolutionispossiblewithintheuniversity’sdeadline,theapplicationmustbedisapproved.
