Program

An internationally recognized scholar in chemical engineering and an accomplished leader in public-private research partnerships, Charles F. Zukoski, PhD, was appointed provost and executive vice president for academic affairs in June 2012 following an international search.

As the university’s second-ranking officer, the provost is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the university’s academic vision. A deep believer in the power of higher education to improve society, Zukoski is committed to the public research university as an institution that creates opportunities for individuals to better their lives. Together with President Satish K. Tripathi, Zukoski is engaging the campus community with an initiative to capitalize on UB’s distinctive academic strengths.

Zukoski joined UB from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was the Elio Eliakim Tarika Chair of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. At Illinois, he served as head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and as vice chancellor for research, where he led major changes in technology commercialization and economic engagement activities. A global citizen and leader in higher education internationalization, he also was chairman of the Science and Engineering Research

Council in Singapore prior to coming to UB.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Zukoski was named one of the Hundred Chemical Engineers of the Modern Era by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Reed College and a PhD in chemical engineering from Princeton University.

Presiding Officials

Eunice Ashman Lewin was appointed to the SUNY Board of Trustees in February 2010. She serves on the board committees for audit; education, college readiness and success; communications and external affairs; and academic medical centers and hospitals.

Lewin is a commissioner of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, a member of the Community Leadership Council for Say Yes to Education Buffalo, a founding member of the Roswell Park Alliance and a board member for the Independent Health Foundation. She is an emeritus member of the Canisius College Board of Regents, as well as a member of the Erie County chapter of Links and the Hispanic Women’s League. She is an originator of the Buffalo Niagara Guitar Festival.

Among Lewin’s numerous regional and statewide honors are the Buffalo Urban League’s William L. Evans and Whitney M. Young Jr. Humanitarian Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award from UB’s Graduate School of Education, the Ebony and Ivory Civic Award, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education, the National Conference for Community and Justice of Western New York 50th Annual Citation Award and the Marcus Garvey Community Service Award. She is a member of the Western New York Women’s Hall of Fame.

In June 2010, she retired after a 30-year career as a bilingual social worker for the Buffalo Board of Education Committee on Special Education.

Lewin was born in Guantanamo, Cuba; her family immigrated to the United States in 1967. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Marymount Manhattan College before moving to Buffalo in 1976. She holds master’s degrees in American and Puerto Rican studies, and in educational administration from the University at Buffalo.

Latin Honors
