PURPOSE OF THIS MATERIAL

This will help you to be more properly trained to hear from Godyourself and for others. There is more to be involved than justhearing from however, one must also be willing to work on their

character and motives. This course will begin at a very foundational level and will enable oneto progress to different levels of ability and understanding in theprophetic. As each of you pray for each other in the activationsections, you will have practical demonstrations of hearing from Godfor each other. This course will not make prophets of those whom theLord has not called as prophets and hence, should not be seen as themeans of one's release in the local church to prophesy at will.

Week I.—Hearing From God

As people we all want to heart from God. We all want to know what Hehas to say to us at any given moment. We live in a world where theyare many voices to hear. There are psychics who claim to hear fromGod and are able to help people with their problems. We live in aworld where many are desperately seeking an answer to their problems. There are tarot cards, astrologers, and others who evenclaim to be able to speak to the dead.We are shown in scripture that God speaks in a still small voice.Elijah who was a great prophet of God ran to a cave to get away fromthe drama that was around him, and to find a place to hide in.

God gives him some food, and some drink, and sends him off to themountain at Horeb, where he climbs into a cave for shelter. And Godasks him, "why are you here Elijah" Elijah tells him that he hasworked hard for God, but has failed, the enemy has killed all of Godspeople, he is the only one left and they are looking for him to kill himnow too. God says, to go watch out the cave’s mouth. Elijah sees awind storm of frightening power, tearing rocks out of the earth. Thisis the kind of man Elijah is, this is the kind of ministry he has had.The wild wind of God's power! But God was not in the wind. Then

Elijah sees the earthquake, and again Elijah was this kind of prophet.Always shaking things up, disrupting the order of things, but God isnot in the Earthquake either. Then the firey prophet, sees the fire. Theprophet of fire, the one who called down the fire from heaven, the onewho disappears into the heavens in a chariot of fire, looks unto thefire but God is not in the fire either. And the word of the LORD cameto him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

10 He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." 11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the

LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in thewind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORDwas not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 WhenElijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. I Kings 19

*We see from this passage that God spoke to Elijah in “a still small

voice.” God did not yell at him. Elijah needed to be able to “LISTEN”.Prophets and prophetic people need to be able to listen to the voiceof God. Over time and with experience, we can be able to hear thatvoice and how to distinguish it from the voices of others.

THE STORY OF THE YOUNG SAMUEL

The young Samuel heard the audible voice of God speaking to him asa child when he was lying down in his bed in the temple.

3:1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; [there was] noopen vision. 3:2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli [was] laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, [that] he could not see; 3:3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD,where the ark of God [was], and Samuel was laid down [to sleep]; 3:4That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here [am] I. 3:5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here [am] I; for thou calledst me. And hesaid, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 3:6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to

Eli, and said, Here [am] I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.3:7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. 3:8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here

[am] I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.3:9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he

call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 3:10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. ThenSamuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. 3:11 And the LORDsaid to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the

ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

What is Prophecy?

Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." Rev. 19:10 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in atongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I Cor. 14

Who is the Spirit of Prophecy? In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 the Bible says the Holy Spirit is the source of spiritual gifts. One of those gifts is the gift of prophecy (1 Cor. 12:10).Therefore, the phrase "Spirit of Prophecy" would seem to apply to theOne who gives the gifts--the Holy Spirit--and not to the humanrecipient of the gift. The Spirit of God is called by many names in theBible. In all cases it would be blasphemy to ascribe these names toany human:

*Activation

The purpose of each activation is to bring about a practical application of what we have learned in the previous lesson. This also gives theperson or persons, an opportunity to operate in the gift of prophecyin a safe and controlled environment. This time of the course will beinvolved in what is sometimes called “prophetic prayer.”

Romans 8:26-27-- 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God'swill.

Find someone in the room that you can partner with to begin this time of prophetic prayer with. One of the partners needs to lead by beginningto pray first. Allow yourself up to a minute of time to “see with theeyes of your heart” what the Lord is showing you. If He is showingyou pictures of some sort, then you are a “SEER” type of a person.

He may be speaking to your heart. If this is the case, then LISTEN towhat is being said and begin praying these words or thoughts to theother person. You may as well be a person that “SENSES” or “FEELS” something about the other person. After you KNOW whathas been said or shown to you by the Holy Spirit, then pray thesewords or pictures directly to the other person.

Ask for feedback:

To conclude with this time, then ask for feedback concerning what

was being prayed for. Do the words of your prayer “ring true” in thespirit for the other person? Exchange email or phone numbers if youwant to to continue this as an on-going exercise.

SCHOOL OF THE PROPHETIC—

Stephen A. Hanson

Week Two: Prophetic Order and Protocol in the Church

God is a God of order and not of disorder. Every gathering, whether it is secular or non-secular,needs to have some type of order or structure to it. Otherwise, there is free-flowing chaos, andchaos cannot benefit anyone.

Paul outlines in I Cor. 14:20 some of these guidelines to us. Paul begins with telling us the needto be able to hear what is being said in a church gathering. 6  Now, brothers, if I come to you and

speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or  prophecy or word of instruction? 7  Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as

the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in

the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it

is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what

you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.

Orderly Worship

26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word

of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the

 strengthening of the church.

Page 6: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 6/33

(We see here that any of these messages are for the strengthening of the church. Otherwise,

what is being said would not be good.)27  If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and

someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church

and speak to himself and God. 29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should

weigh carefully what is said.30

And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first  speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and

encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not aGod of disorder but of peace.

*We see here that there may well be more than one that gives forth a prophecy or message to

the church. The one that is sitting down who has been given a message is allowed precedence

over the one that is now speaking. I wonder how often this type of thing goes on? It becomes

very important for the others within the assembly to judge the words that are being spoken. If

one has a check in their spirit because of the message being said, then it would be wise for

that to be said then. However, because of basic protocol, it seems to be the best procedure for

the pastor to voice his or her concern at the time, rather than a member who immediately

stands up and voices his or her concern.  37  If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I amwriting to you is the Lord's command. 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.[ i ]

39Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But

everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

Here we see that everything must be done decently and in order. Those giving prophetic words

need to be able to follow the flow of the service. Consider what the message that you are to be

giving. Does it build-up the church? Would it benefit those who hear it? Would it bring

edification or would it bring condemnation? Paul also tells us in this passage above that we

are not to think of ourselves too highly than we ought to. It is the Lord’s command for us to

speak, so the glory is to be given to him and him alone. Lastly we see that God has given us

self-control. So, as a word is welling up within us, it need not be said right then, we can wait

until the right timing of the service to give it. “The spirits of the prophets are subject to the

control of the prophets.”

Who is the word for? When to share it? How to share it?

(Is it for the church, yourself, someone else or who?)

Page 7: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

There is a right and a wrong way to approach a church. I have found for me,that when the Lord directs me to a particular church, He oftentimes, then gives me a word "beforehand." This I write down and pray over, asking Him to confirm what has been spoken to me, so that I amcertain as to its content and anointing. Then comes the time for

"when" to give it. This also is something which I believe, is crucial tothe prophet, or the prophetic minister. Knowing what to say, and whento say it, are "key" I believe. Remember that there is a "time foreverything, and a purpose for everything under heaven." As mentionedearlier, the Lord has seemed to give me something to say"beforehand," and I write this down. If the church or pastor does notknow me, and even if they do, I usually approach the pastor and saythat "I have a word from the Lord," and believe that it needs to beshared today." This is a good way to approach a pastor or church, and Ithink, adds credibility to the prophetic.

Now, that is not to say that the Lord has not given me something or shownme something, while in the midst of a service--He has. One needs to besensitive to what He is speaking and sharing with you at the time. Is itsomething personal which concerns only you, or is it something which wouldbenefit the body of Christ? These are important considerations to make, andones which perhaps, are learned over time, through trial and error. Also, isthis word specifically for that particular church, or is this something for thebody of Christ at large? Obviously, there may well be something in everyword which has application to the body of Christ at large, but is the real

"meat" and content for someone or some church only? Also, and perhaps, finally, how does one then conduct themselves in giving personal words fromthe Lord to those in their midst at a church? Here again, I believe, wisdom iskey, and important. Obviously, if someone is praying for you, and suddenlyhas a word from the Lord, and then speaks it out, this is something whichneeds to be weighed carefully. There may be other times when He speaks toyou in the midst of a service concerning someone there in your midst. Iusually then ask Him when would be a good time to share this with theperson, and He will let me know. (These then, are just simply some goodrules of conduct for those involved in the prophetic, and hopefully, helpfulguidelines to follow. Remember that He is a God of order and not disorder,

but that there is also freedom where the Spirit is, and He is also a creativeGod, and doesn't always do things the same way. He wants us to grow in ourability to trust Him, and not lean unto our own understanding.)

Activation:

Page 8: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

During this time, I want you to find a quiet place in the room. It needs to be free of distractions

and anything that may keep you from hearing that still small voice of the Lord within you. You

need to have a pad of paper with a pen or pencil with you at this time. I now will offer up a prayer that I want you all to pray and listen with me: “Father, we know that you have said that

we are your sheep and that your sheep hear your voice and that they do not listen to another. You

have also said that we can ask seek and knock and that the door would be opened unto you. Wecome to you Lord asking that we would hear from you now. Amen”

Now, close your eyes and let the spirit speak to you. As He does, then begin writing down whatyou sense that He is saying to you now. Write down each word or phrase that comes to you.

Don’t worry about writing too much or too fast. Just simply keep listening and write what you

sense that He is saying. Now, I will ask whoever wants to share these things that you’ve written

down to share them as you feel free to.

Activation:

During this week I want you to look deep within your spirit as you seek the Lord

for this person. When you have a thought that you sense is for your partner, then

I want you to share it with them. Please remember, this is not a time for personal

prophecy.

Page 11: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 11/33

During this week’s activation time I want you share exactly what you sense the

Lord is saying to you for the other person. Do not add anything else to it.

Guidelines to Making it safe:On the giving side:

Realize that most prophetic words are given to edify, exhort and comfortfor the edifying of the Body of Christ (I Cor. 14:3,12).

One of the biggest misconceptions is that when giving a word it needs to be

judgmental or critical. This is not true at all, and is only reserved for very

mature prophets who would speak concerning an individual who is

blatantly living in sin, and then it is giving in the spirit of love for that

individual.

Remember that you are to share this with your partner in a loving and

gentle way.

On the receiving side:

You need to know that your partner is going out of their comfort zone to

share with you the word or thoughts they have for you from the Lord.

They may be right one or they may “miss it” at some point. Please be

understanding in giving them feedback.

Judging the word:

• Does it stand up to scriptural principles and truths?

• Does it bear witness to your spirit (though not necessarily

your mind or emotions)?

• Does it produce the fruit of righteousness, peace and joy

within your heart (vs. anxiety, confusion or fear)?

Do not make any major decisions based upon this word. Seek out counsel,

prayer, and imput from others whom you trust. Seek the Lord and He will

lead you.

Do not become offended if your partner "misses it" on something offered

to you.

Finally, offer honest feedback, but do so gently. If your partner's

revelation for you blesses or encourages you, let them know. If they "miss

Page 12: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

it", be as kind and gentle but truthful in your feedback as you hope your

partner will be with you if you miss it.

SCHOOL OF THE PROPHETIC— Stephen A. Hanson

Week Four: Is Prophecy Conditional?

Personal Prophecy-Unconditional & Conditional

Unconditional--will take place no matter what happens. Rev. 11:15Gen. 9:15, 16--No devil, angel, or human, can prevent anunconditional prophecy.

-An irrevocable decree. Examples: Nebuchadnezzar's dream--Dan. 2-Abraham's prophecy-Gen. 17:6, 8Unconditional Prophecies can be postponed, but not cancelled.

Jonah sent to Ninevah. 100 yrs. Later it happened during Nathum 1-3. Isa. 38:11, 22Eze. 12:25--It will happen, or come to pass irregardless. Example of Isaiah and Hezekiah.

Conditional

Acts 9:1, 6; Acts 9:10, 16--restore eyes.I Tim. 1:18, 4:15--Requires cooperation from the recipient. Meditateon these things.

"All prophecy is conditional, whether conditions are stated or not."

Using Prophecy for important decisions:

Go to the seer--I. Sam. 9:9; I. Kings 22:6Using Prophecy for important decisions:

Romance/Marriage

Be very careful--need a confirmation. Should be confirmation only.

Business Endeavors

Left to Mature prophets only.

Pregnancies, births, babies--Normally given to prepare couples.

The prophetic rhema word activates and opens the barren womb.Prophets prepare the way for Christ's coming.

Mal. 4:5; Matt. 11:14; Matt. 12(17):11, 12; Matt. 3:1-4; I. Co. 4:15**God works on our desires, and changes those desires in time, toline-up with the prophetic word given.**Prophets are God's spokesman--Heb. 1:1-2; Eph. 4:8-11; I Tim. 4:1;Amos 3:7

Activation:ritReceiving a Group Word

During this week you will be given the opportunity to enter into

body ministry where you can share what the Lord is giving to youfor an individual or the group that is gathered here. You will not besharing a prophetic word but simply a short word of knowledge forsomeone or a group of people. As you relax, let the Holy Spiritspeak to you. He may reveal to you that someone has a “soreelbow” or a “severe headache.” He may also say “bad attitude” or“unforgiveness.” Do not let fear creep in, but have faith that theLord is speaking to you, and then simply speak the word that theLord gives to you for the group.

Remember that God speaks in different ways:

Again, here is an explanation of these different modes:

1. If you are a SEER type of person He is showing you pictures of some sort.

2. If you are a HEARER He may be speaking to your heart. If this is the case,

then LISTEN to what is being said to you. Rarely will it be in an audible

type of voice.

3. If you are a KNOWER/ FEELER then you will just “know” or “feel” what

is to be shared. You will recognize this pattern; it is a built-in sense of what is.

Remember again that this is not the time to give judgmental or critical words. So, simply go

one at a time and speak what the Lord has given to you for the group.

Week 5—“Timing With Giving Prophetic Words & Waiting on the Vision”

Timing

Gal. 4:4 Mk. 1:15--Waiting on the prophetic promise is very important.

Eccl. 3:1--What is the season in your life? (You need to know it.)

Hab. 2:3--The vision is for an appointed time.

**Judge the prophet by his character, and his fruits.

**Consider the "content" of the word, and "accuracy". Spirit in which it is given.

Ishmael--We will produce an Ishmael when we run ahead of God.

Don't run ahead, or lag behind. God is always on time!

Spirit Witness

If you want to know the specific will of God, depart from evil, do good, and seek peace. Ps.

34:14.

--Don't do anything until you have peace.

Fruit of Spirit

Need gifts and fruits. Spiritual mind is shown by a life of peace. Rom. 8:6

Clearance

"Strainings"..Acts 16:6, 9

Counsel

Seeks wise counsel--Prov. 12:15; 11:14; 15:22; 19:20, 21; 20:18; 24:6

Confirmation

II Co. 13:1--Every matter confirmed by 2 or more witnesses.

Unity

In agreement. Ps. 33:1; Matt. 18:19; Judges 20:11; Acts 2:1

Wisdom is Supreme--therefore get wisdom

Prov. 4:7

RO'EH-HOZEH AND NABBI

Page 15: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 15/33

I thought it might be good to talk about the "reception" or the"receiving" of a prophetic word, vs. the "speaking" of thatprophetic message or word. The two words being usedhere are RO'EH-HOZEH, and nabbi'. Nabbi' referrs to the"speaking forth" of a prophetic message, or to "bubble

up."

Also, in looking at I Sam. 9:9, it states, "He that is nowcalled a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer." The thoughtis that the person who was called a "seer" (ro'eh) in the timeof Samuel came later to be called "prophet" (nabbi) in thetime when I Sam. was written. It also needs to be pointedout that both terms mean "to see." However, many of usinvolved in prophetic ministry would realize that oftentimes,a message comes to us beforehand, we "receive" it, welisten as the Lord is saying these things to us. This receptionis called in Hebrew RO'EH-HOZEH. There may be a matter of time between when we hear God speaking a word to us, andwhen we actually "speak" it forth.

I found myself this last Sunday going to a particular churchin town here to deliver a "word" for the congregation. I had"received" the message about a week beforehand, and hadcome to the church, but no one was there that Sunday. Thismade me wonder at the time, what I should do with it. Thisword was one of which had been sent out to the body of Christ. The word was, entitled, MY SHEEP. At the time, Iknew that it had significance for this church, partly becauseit began speaking about Zion being the home of God, andthat in ages past he dwelt among his people, but now inthese days, he dwells with us in our spirits. The name of thechurch was Zion Full Gospel Church, a relatively smallchurch, but filled with people who had a zeal and fervor forserving the Lord.

As mentioned before, I sent out this word to the body of Christ at large because it seemed to have some "universal"application. But I knew that somehow, I needed to take it,and run with it. There is a "waiting" upon the Lord for Histiming in these matters I believe. When God speaks to us,remember that we need to consider how and when the

Page 16: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

message should be "delivered." When worshiping andpraising the Most High God in a service or worship time in achurch, and a word is "received," then usually it is deliveredvery soon afterwards, or immediately, during the time of worship. But perhaps, during the week, and in our prayertime, we "receive" a word or message for a particularindividual or church. Inquire of the Lord as to "how" and"when", or even "if" we should deliver this message. It mayor may not be immediately.

Timing becomes very important for prophetic people, especially when they must consider when and how to delivera particular word. The God we serve is one in which we cancontinually seek for guidance and wisdom in these matters.

He not only is there to give the word, but is there toenlighten and guide us every step of the way, so that weknow how and when to speak it. This scripture then, canbecome our guiding light when considering these things:

"There is a time for everything, and a season for everyactivity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal,a time to tear down and a time to build,a time to weep and a time to laugh,a time to mourn and a time to dance,a time to scatter stones anda time to gather them,a time to embrace and a time torefrain,a time to search and a time togive up,

a time to keep and a time tothrow away,a time to tear and a time tomend,a time to be silent and a timeto speak,a time to love and a time to

Receiving a Word for Our Local Church or Corporate Body:

During this week we are going to go deeper into sharing what theLord is saying to us. Last week, we shared a word of knowledgefor an individual or the group, and this time I am asking you toshare a thought for the entire group. This will give you theopportunity to begin to share words for your local body of believers.

During this time I want you to find a quiet place and ask the Lord

what He may be saying to you for the group. Remember that: 3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement

and comfort. I Cor. 14  This is to be done in a safe and controlled environment

where no harsh or judgmental words are being offered.

To conclude, as you consider the scripture in 1 Cor. 14:26, "What then shall we say,

brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a

revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the

strengthening of the church." Consider these things and see if you fit into this pattern

from the scripture.

Remember these scriptures as we begin this week’s time:

1 Corinthians 12:7 "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for thecommon good."

1 Corinthians 12:11 "All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he givesthem to each one, just as he determines."

· Seek the Lord

Pray for about one minute that God would begin to use you. (1 Corinthians 14:14 and

2 Tim. 1:6).

Believe that you will receive from the Lord.

· Remain Silent

Go silent, look inside, see and hear. Tune in to what God desires to share with you.

Remember that harsh and negative words are not to be voiced.

· Begin to Share

Who wants to share first?

Take turns sharing the word or thought or picture that the Lord gives you. Try to

refrain from long words so all will have time to share.

Did these words “ring true”?

(Ask the volunteer to share)

1. Did the words speak to you personally?

2. Were they encouraging?

Ask the Group:

1. Did you receive something similar that someone else shared?

Begin with a new volunteer

*Repeat the same steps above with a new person.

Week Seven—   Coming Unto Maturity in the Prophetic

1 Tim 4:14-15

14. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a

prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.15.  Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that

everyone may see your progress. (NIV)

What type of word is it?

We also need to know and distinguish between what may well be forourselves and not for the body of Christ at large. Also, is this a word

for a particular church, a particular group of people, or is it universalin theme. Is there something in the content and essence of this wordthat would speak and build-up the body of Christ universal? When agun is shot, and if that gun is a shot gun, then the spray of thatammunition can go in a wide area. We need to know how to properlyhandle this ammunition which He has placed within our care. On theother hand, we need not "quench the Spirit," and quickly throw-outsomething which may be for our benefit.

19. Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20. do not treat prophecies with

contempt. 21. Test everything. Hold on to the good. I Thess. 5

Also, is this word simply a word of comfort or edification, or is it adirectional or confrontive word? I believe that great carefulness isneeded when delivering either a directional, correctional, or evenone which is illuminating. We all know about the simple word of prophecy, but I am talking about something else here.

Page 21: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

2. Learning to Wait: 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumbleand fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will

soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and

not be faint. Isaiah 40

3. Listen to Advice: 20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you

will be wise.21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose

that prevails. Prov. 19

18 Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance. Prov. 20

4. Responsibility of the prophetic community:

What is the responsibility we have to the body of Christ when it comesto the "prophetic community"? I'll simply say, that we mustpreserve the true word of the Lord, and not to presume to speakanything, unless it comes from His Spirit. Will there be a mixture?Perhaps some....However, we need to keep the water untaintedand free from anything which might cause a mixture, and pollute

the stream. Yes, I do believe, that it is time to come untomaturity, and maturity means to "grow-up in these things of theLord." He has been training, and refining, and directing. Part of this process I believe, is to bring about a greater discernment inthe body as to what is pure and what is not. We can't just accepteverything which comes to us in the form of a supposed wordfrom the Lord. It will convict, it will discern between the soul andSpirit, and yes, it will build-up and give hope, even when

judgment may be pronounced. There are words, and then, thereare words. We need to be quite careful in how we administer

them. We need to develop our faculties of Spirit to the pointwhich we know that we know that we know, that this indeed issomething from the throneroom.

5. Who is the Word For?

Page 22: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 22/33

One needs to be sensitive to what He is speaking and sharingwith you at the time. Is it something personal which concerns onlyyou, or is it something which would benefit the body of Christ?

These are important considerations to make, and ones which

perhaps, are learned over time, through trial and error. Also, isthis word specifically for that particular church, or is thissomething for the body of Christ at large? Obviously, there maywell be something in every word which has application to thebody of Christ at large, but is the real "meat" and content forsomeone or some church only? Also, and perhaps, finally, howdoes one then conduct themselves in giving personal words fromthe Lord to those in their midst at a church? Here again, I believe, wisdom is key, and important. Obviously, if someone is prayingfor you, and suddenly has a word from the Lord, and then speaks

it out, this is something which needs to be weighed carefully. There may be other times when He speaks to you in the midst of a service concerning someone there in your midst. I usually thenask Him when would be a good time to share this with the person, and He will let me know. (These then, are just simply some goodrules of conduct for those involved in the prophetic, andhopefully, helpful guidelines to follow. Remember that He is a Godof order and not disorder, but that there is also freedom wherethe Spirit is, and He is also a creative God, and doesn't always do

things the same way. He wants us to grow in our ability to trustHim, and not lean unto our own understanding.)

6. Receiving Discipline From the Lord:

4 You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against

sin;5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "MY

SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR

FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;6 FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE

SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES." 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what

Page 23: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

son is there whom his father does not discipline?

8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you

are illegitimate children and not sons.9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them;

shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?

10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but Hedisciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.

11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those

who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

12 Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble,

13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.(Hebrews 12:4-13).

Prophesying From the Spirit of Prophecy

God speaks to individuals as well as corporately. This week we will again have the

opportunity to share and speak to the group.

During this time as you listen to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to you, remember the

words in 1 Cor. 14:3, that God speaks to us for our strengthening, edification and

comfort. Remember again that this is not the time to give harsh or judgmental words.

This is a time to stretch yourself as before you gave simple words of knowledge for

the group, and each time, you are strengthened as you grow in your ability to trust and

speak what the Lord is giving to you for the benefit of the body.

During this week you will move into the spirit of prophecy. Remember 1 Cor. 14:31:

"For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged". Allow this scripture to speak to you in regards to allowing the Lord to

speak to you for the body of Christ.

You will be looking for a prophetic word that will speak to the group corporately.

Take turns as each of you can have the opportunity to speak what the Lord is saying to

you.

Imagine that you are in your church or a local gathering, and you are speaking to the

assembly there. Relax and let the spirit of the Lord guide and direct you. He may just

give you a portion of the word that you are to deliver. Trust him for the rest as you

Week Eight:

The Revelatory Gifts

In 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul lists the spiritual gifts... these include the four revelatory gifts: word of knowledge, word of wisdom, discerning of spirits and

prophecy. In this teaching we will be taking a detailed look at the word of knowledge,

the word of wisdom and the discernment of spirits. These gifts can and do work in

conjunction with each other. Below are a brief and concise definition of these gifts of

the Holy Spirit:

• Word of Knowledge (1 Corinthians 12:8)

Supernatural revelation as to a piece of knowledge which would be naturally

unknown to the recipient.

• Word of Wisdom (1 Corinthians 12:8)

Supernatural impartation of wisdom beyond the natural wisdom of the

recipient.

• Discerning of Spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10)

A God-given ability to distinguish the spirit motivating a person or event.

• Discerning of Spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10)

A God-given ability to distinguish the spirit motivating a person or event.

Even though we define them for clarity's sake, as with all the things of God, there is a

depth and a mystery about them that goes beyond mere human words and

understanding.

Page 25: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 25/33

God will use these revelatory gifts to accomplish many purposes: to lead people to

Christ, to build up faith, to heal, to expose the inner heart of the believer, etc . They

will allow you to minister more effectively. As with all the gifts we need to exercise

care that we do not go beyond the revealed word from God.

WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

We will now look in more detail at the word of knowledge. Supernatural revelation by

the Holy Spirit of a certain fact or facts. These facts can be about the past or the

present. It is a word from the Lord that the recipient would have no other way of

knowing. It is an instant word for a particular time or person or to accomplish a

special purpose. There is no academic or intellectual requirement to receive the word

of knowledge. It is a gift operating purely in the spiritual realm. As it is a gift it is

unearned.

Ways of Knowing

In the Christian tradition there has always been a distinction between 'reason' and

'revelation' as ways of receiving knowledge.

Human reason is a God-given gift in which all people share. The faculty of reason can

be developed through education (from informal socialization processes in early

childhood, to the more formal education of the school system).

Revelation is understanding which is directly given as a gift from God to believers

and includes an understanding of the scriptures (as the Holy Spirit brings insight) andthe revelatory gifts. Simply put, reason comes from 'inside' the human mind,

revelation is given from 'outside' by God. The word of knowledge is in this second

category.

Bible knowledge can be a matter of reason (merely reading and understanding the

text) or revelation (reading the text with revelation given by the Spirit).

Word of Knowledge in Scriptures

Mark 2:8

"At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questionsamongst themselves"

Jesus knew what they were thinking and saying.

Luke 1:41

"When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting the child leaped within her womb. And  Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry,

'Blessed are you among woman and blessed is the fruit of your womb'."

Page 26: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 26/33

Elizabeth received the word of knowledge about the baby Mary was carrying.

John 1:47

"When Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him, he said of him 'Here is an

Israelite in whom there is no deceit'." Jesus knew Nathaniel.

There are many examples of the word of knowledge in the scriptures. Here are just a

few more:

1 Sam chs 9-10, 1 Kings 14:2-3, 2 Kings 5:20-27, 6:8-12, John 4 18-29, Matt

9:4, Acts 5 1-11, Acts 10:19.

Operating in the Word of Knowledge

The word of knowledge can be received in different ways. We will look at these now.

The Word of Knowledge on the other hand is simply a revelation

concerning the past and present. It is a supernaturalimpartation to you of facts concerning the person’s past andpresent. It might be about something that happened theperson’s life, or it might be a current circumstance orcondition. It could even include a person’s thoughts andaspirations. It could include the condition of the spirit, soul orbody. Or it could include events in their life. It might includesomething the person doesn’t even know themselves.

To Function In The Word Of Knowledge, One Must:

• Have a strong desire to release the Gifts of the Holy Spirit;

• Be sensitive to God;

• Know or recognize when the Holy Spirit is speaking to us about a certain

 person or matter;

• Know the right timing to make known that certain information;

• Know how to minister that "word" in an edifying way;

• Be willing and prepared to accept any fine-tuning, teaching and correction

from those over us in the Lord; and also to

• Take responsibility for what effects the Word of Knowledge has after youhave "delivered" or "spoken" it.

WORD OF WISDOM

Firstly it has nothing to do with natural wisdom or intellectual capabilities. It is not

the Holy Spirit giving you an ability to be wise to overcome your lack of

Page 27: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 27/33

knowledge or intelligence. It has nothing to do with you getting a solution to a

problem where before you were perplexed. I know that this is the way some people

have interpreted it. The Holy Spirit reveals the Word to us at times, and we ‘see’

things in the Word that we have not seen before. This is not an operation of this

gift.

It is not you suddenly getting the wisdom to solve a crisis. If you are sitting in a

church council discussing some problem that needs to be solved and you suddenly

get the solution, that is not an operation of the Word of Wisdom. It seems to me

that everyone gets stuck on the word ‘wisdom’ as though it relates to mental

capability. You can receive such influences from the intuition of your spirit at any

time.

Notice it is a “word of wisdom”. In other words, it’s not a book of wisdom, or anencyclopedia of wisdom, but rather a “word”. Perhaps it may be only a few

sentences, or maybe a few words, or perhaps just one word. God has all wisdom in

His mind. He is able to take a “word” of that wisdom and convey it to you through

the Holy Spirit. The results can be astounding. Keep in mind that all the gifts of the

Spirit are supernatural. The “word of wisdom” is a supernatural manifestation by

the Spirit of God concerning the purpose and perfect will of God. It always speaks

of situations in the future. This gift of the Spirit is often manifested to solve an

unsolvable problem, and the wisdom displayed often only applies to that particular

need.

Word of Wisdom in the Scriptures

John 4:16-17

"Jesus said to her, 'Go call your husband, and come back'. The woman

answered him, 'I have no husband'."  Note the word of wisdom in how Jesus talked to this lady. He did not directly confront

her with the knowledge of her lifestyle.

1 Kings 3:16-28

The story of Solomon and the two women who were disputing who's son had died.

Solomon operated in wisdom to settle the dispute.

Page 28: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

Discerning of spirits is the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spiritto perceive the source of a spiritual manifestation and determine

whether it is of God (Acts 10:30-35), of the devil (Acts 16:16-18), of man (Acts 8:18-23), or of the world. It is not mind reading, psychicphenomena, or the ability to criticize and find fault.

Discerning of spirits must be done by the power of the Holy Spirit; Hebears witness with our spirit when something is or is not of God. Thegift of discerning of spirits is the supernatural power to detect therealm of the spirits and their activities. It implies the power of spiritualinsight - the supernatural revelation of plans and purposes of the

enemy and his forces. It is a gift which protects and guards your Christian life.

Biblical Examples Of The Gift Of Discernment

Luke 4:34

"'Let us alone! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you

come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.' But Jesus

rebuked him, saying 'Be silent, and come out of him'."

Jesus recognized the spirit which was speaking to him.

Matthew 17:18

"And Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him."  Again Jesus recognized the spirit behind the young boy's epileptic fit.

 Note:

Although in this case Jesus saw the cause of the epileptic fit as being a demonic

presence we cannot form a doctrine that says that every one who has an

epileptic fit is demonized!

WISDOM AND CHOICE:

The Word of Wisdom is often used alongside a Word of Knowledge. When God gives a

Word of Knowledge to a person, it is important to know what to do with this gift. How dowe apply it?

There are four choices we have as to what to do when we receive a Word of Knowledgeand we need to ask ourselves, "What is the best and right thing to do with thisknowledge?"

1. Is the Word of Knowledge you have received:

Page 29: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 29/33

2. For prayer purposes only?

3. To be shared with the local church oversight first?

4.   For private sharing with the individual concerned? (Keeping in mind you mustbe accountable to your Church Leadership — they should know what is goingon).

For sharing in an edifying way in a public meeting? To speak out Words of Knowledgein public meetings, they must be done in such a way that the individual concerned, andthe meeting as a whole, is edified.

If there is any doubt about the knowledge received, or what you should  do with it, checkwith your Church Pastor, Elders, Leadership. Run it past them and let them advise youwhat to do. That way you are ministering under the guidance, safety and counsel of your spiritual covering (and every one of us needs spiritual covering and accountabilitywhen we are ministering in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit – none of us are to be a "law"unto ourself). Be humble and teachable!

Activation:

During this time you will again pair off with someone or work with the group so

that each of you has someone to minister to, to learn which type of mode that you

operate in. Remember from before that you will either “SEE” what the Lord wants

to show you, “HEAR” what He has to say, or “FEEL” what He wants you to know.

Remember that God spoke to the prophet Jeremiah through the avenues of

“seeing” and “hearing.”

11 The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?"

"I see the branch of an almond tree," I replied. 12 The LORD said to me, "You

have seen correctly, for I am watching [ a ] to see that my word is fulfilled." 13 Theword of the LORD came to me again: "What do you see?" "I see a boiling pot,

tilting away from the north," I answered. 14 The LORD said to me, "From the northdisaster will be poured out on all who live in the land.

 Jeremiah 1

*Once God has spoken to you, describe what you see, tell them what you hear, or share what you have felt about the person that you are to share with.

*Step out in faith, and don’t worry about if it makes sense to you or not, it may

well be exactly what the other person needs to hear at this time.

Now allow the receiver of this message to give you feedback.

*Repeat the same process with another person. You may do with as many other

partners as time allows. Notice whether or not you continue to “HEAR,” “SEE,” or

“FEEL.”

*Determine how many in the group fit into each of the categories.

SCHOOL OF THE PROPHETIC— Stephen A. Hanson

Week Ten— USING DISCERNMENT WITH PROPHETIC WORDS

 July 24, 00

This is a teaching that I believe is very important for us as the body of Christ. As we grow in our callings and prophetic gifts and abilities, itbecomes more and more crucial that these "words" are discernedproperly, and that they come from a clean and a pure heart. Itbecomes very easy for other things to come in that can add a mixtureto the pure stream of God's river and prophetic flow. Now, we alsodon’t want to go obviously to the other extreme, where the "spirit willbe quenched either," and we "despise prophecy."

(I Thes. 5 19. Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20. do not treat prophecies with

contempt. 21. Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22. Avoid every kind of evil.)

Below then, are four things which become important for us to use as criteria so

that we can then properly judge or discern, prophetic words. Hopefully then, we

can come to mature manhood as a church, and will be able to know the voice of

God as He is calling us to come up higher. Perhaps we know of some of these

things, but do we practice them; do we put them to use? If we don’t then, we are

accepting EVERYTHING that comes our way in a church service, a gathering,

conference, or across our computer screens. There are so many voices out there

in the world, and there are also perhaps, many "voices" which we have heard

and seen from the prophetic community---some are good and pure; but othersleave us with a taste of cardboard and are defiled. To be sure, "We prophesy in

part and we know in part," and I am not referring to a type of perfectionism

here, but merely so that we can develop and use better discernment towards the

prophetic.

CRITERIA:

Page 31: School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

8/6/2019 School of the Prophetic by Stephen Hanson

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/school-of-the-prophetic-by-stephen-hanson 31/33

1. Does it bear witness with your spirit that it is of the Holy Spirit?

2. Does it line up with the word?

3. What is the spirit of the prophet? Does it line up with spirit of the message?

4. Content flow, clarity----Is it simple...is it readable, is it clear...or is it muddled?

Does it change persons in the midst of the word?

1.) Here is where discerning of Spirits is important. 29. Two or threeprophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what issaid (I Co. 14) Others should "weigh carefully" what is being said, or "discern" the message, whether it be from God or not.

*It is interesting to note that we are told here in scripture that if something isgiven to someone else who is sitting down, then they should give their message,

and the first speaker should stop. Now, this obviously needs to be done in a

decent and orderly fashion. ( 30. And if a revelation comes to someone who is

sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31. For you can all prophesy in turn so

that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.) I wonder how often this sort of

thing happens. The first speaker then, must have enough sensitivity to know

when to stop speaking, so that someone else will be able to speak forth his or her

message from the Lord. We also have some solid teaching in I John as well: (1.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are

from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4)

We need to be more like the Bereans: (Acts 17:11. Now the Bereans were of more

noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great

eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.)

*They examined the scriptures every day and checked to see what Paul was

saying was indeed true. We need to be of the same mind.

2.) Obviously the prophetic word needs to have as its basis, the content of what

can be substantiated in scripture. Any true prophetic word will not violate or go

against the simple truths that may be found in scripture. I believe that those whoare young in the prophetic gift prophesy a word from the Lord, which is mostly

scripture in content. What I mean here is that much of the prophetic word can be

found "word for word" in scripture. As we grow in our maturity and are more

experienced with hearing from God, He then can trust us with words that have

as their content, more of a directional flow, or are more profound in content.

They still will have as their basis and foundation though, the foundational truths

which may be found in scripture. In other words, they will build-up and edify,

while at the same time, they will point to the severity of God as found in His

judgment for a nation or an individual.

3.) By this I mean, is the message angry, does it have a sense of self-pity, or is it

coming from a spirit of being hurt? It is so very important that we "emptyourselves," and not carry things inside us that may well cause a root of bitterness

to spring up, or that could obstruct the prophetic flow. These things can easily

creep in, and taint the message of the word that we speak. We are called to build-

up and edify the body of Christ, not to scold or embitter others. Does the message

portray attitudes that come out of unhealthy or damaged relationships with

others, or can we see a patient and fruitful character portrayed in the word

which is given? I am not saying that there will not be judgment in any of these

words, nor correction, nor anything less than the "full counsel of God."

4.) God is not the God of confusion, but He wants us to understand what He is

saying to us. Thus the message needs to be one of clarity and not to be obscure. (I

Co. 14:7. Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or

harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction

in the notes? 8. Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready

 for battle? )

(By this I don’t mean that it is wrong for a prophetic word to change from a

word which is spoken from the Father’s heart to that of Christ. It becomes very

important who our audience is also in the prophetic word, which is given. There

are times I have seen words which say, "My daughter", or "my jewel," and this

word has been sent out to the entire body of Christ and even posted on a site.

These types of words are NOT meant for the entire body, but are PERSONAL

words that should be kept by the individual. In the content of the message are

there words which seem to single out the person speaking as if they are more

important or "above others?" If so, then the word is coming from a source other

than God. We are called as servants not that others would "serve us." We need

to ask God for wisdom and ask Him "who" the prophetic word is for and He will

inform us. If it is a word for a specific church or group of people, then ask the

Lord when and how to deliver it. If it is for an individual or simply somethingsaid for one’s self, then ask Him about that as well. Finally, if it is for the body of

Christ at large, and is "universal" in nature and content, then:

Hab 2: 2. Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on

tablets so that a herald may run with it. 3. For the revelation awaits an appointed

time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it

will certainly come and will not delay."
