This is a plan that describes how John F. Kennedy High School will provide opportunities to improve family engagement to support student learning. John F. Kennedy High School values the contributions and involvement of parents and family members to establish an equal part- nership for the common goal of improving student achievement. This plan describes the different ways that John F. Kennedy High School will support family engagement and how parents can help plan and participate in activities and events to promote student learning at school and at home. How is it revised? John F. Kennedy High School invited all parents to attend our Annual Revision Meeting last spring to review and revise this Parent and Family Engagement Policy, as well as the Parent Involvement Plan, our School-Parent Compact, and the Title I family engagement budget. Additionally, parent input and comments regarding this plan are welcome during the school year .The plan is posted on our school web- site for parents to view and submit feedback throughout the year. All parent feedback received during the year will be used to revise the plan for the next school year. We also post these documents in our website at the beginning of the year to ask parents for their suggestions . Par- ents and family members can also give feedback during several parent meetings and activities during the school year . Who is it for? All students participating in the Title I, Part A program, and their fami- lies are encouraged and invited to fully participate in the opportunities described in this plan. John F. Kennedy High School will provide full opportunity for the participation of parents and family members with limited English, with disabilities, and of migratory children. Where is it available? What is it? This is a plan that describes how John F. Kennedy High School will

learning. John F. Kennedy High School values the contributions and

2018-19 District Goals By 2020, 90 percent of third-grade students will read on or

above grade level

By 2018, our graduation rate will be

90 percent

By 2018, we will close the achievement gap between sub-

groups by 10 percentage points while increasing the perfor-

mance of all subgroups.

John F. Kennedy Goals JFK will raise the achievement of African-American and His-

panic students by 10 percentage points in order to decrease the

achievement gap by the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

By the end of the 2018-19 school year, JFK will improve the attendance rate

by increasing student attendance rate by 4% and decreasing the incidents of

class cutting and leaving school without permission by 30%.

Parent and Family Engagement John F. Kennedy believes that family engagement means the participation of parents and family members in regular two -way, and

meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring:

• That parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning.

• That parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school.

• That parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to

assist in the education of their child.

School-Parent Compacts As part of this plan, John F. Kennedy High School and our families will develop a school-

parent compact.

A compact is a written agreement that families, teachers, and students jointly develop to ex-

plain how everyone will work together to ensure all students reach grade-level standards. The

compacts will be reviewed and updated annually based on feedback from families, students,

and teachers during various events and the annual Revision Meeting. They are also posted

on our school website (www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Domain/2172) and extra copies are always

Academics To deliver the content standards established by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, John F. Kennedy uses the Unpacked Standards docu-

ments, along with the pacing guide provided by the district. The school uses the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Benchmark data to ensure all

students receive instruction based on their level of performance and rate of progress (for more information, go to our School Improvement Plan on our

website). i-Ready is used as a universal screener to gain diagnostic data and utilize resource material for targeted intensified instruction. For end-of-

year/course evaluations, middle school students will take End-of-Grade and high school students will take the End-of-Course assessments. The state

reports five levels of achievement from 1-5, where 3 and up meets grade-level proficiency and 4-5 meets college-and-career readiness standards. For

The Vision of John F. Kennedy High School is to help students become lifelong learners and

productive citizens in a global economy.

Our Mission is to develop, through rigorous, real-world instruction, graduates who exhibit entrepreneurial ability, career and college readiness, and excellent interpersonal skills. We understand that our families, school staff and community work together to make this hap-

pen.

This is how we plan to accomplish this task.

Events and meetings involving parents will be held at different times during the day/week to make it more convenient for parents to attend. The information shared will be posted on the

school website.

Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled at a time that accommodates parents’ availa-bility. Parents can schedule conferences with teachers by contacting them via e-mail or by

calling the office or Students Services Department.

Parents are encouraged to participate in the planning, review, and improvement of the Title I programs by attending the meetings or becoming a member of our School Improve-ment Team. This team meets twice every month. Other opportunities include the planning, review, and improvement of this Parent and Family Engagement Policy and the joint develop-ment of our School-Parent Compact in meetings held in the spring and fall and submitting

comments at any time during the school year.

John F. Kennedy will provide information on Title I Programs and school performance in our website. Progress reports will be provided to parents two times during each quarter. Ac-cess to student grades will also be available through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Parent-ing education sessions will be conducted throughout the school year to share ways to assist parents and teachers to work together as partners. Parents will be asked for their suggestions

or recommendations.

Parents will receive information from the school regularly in English and Spanish through Connect 5 phone calls, emails, and letters sent home with students or via USPS. Current information about activities will also be posted on the school website and referenced using current social media. Middle School Student-led conferences concerning student academic progress will be held in January and report cards will be scheduled at the end of the first three quarters. John F. Kennedy provides translations and interpretation in Spanish to assist our Latino community and full opportunities for participation of family members with disabili-ties , and of migratory children .

A parent survey will be distributed during spring to evaluate the Title I program, and other parent support groups will be formed as needed, based on parent input. Parents are encour-

aged to provide feedback using oral, written, and digital communication channels.

John F. Kennedy HS supports transitions by providing 6th and 9th grades orientations for parents and students as well as Open House and Curriculum Nights for all grades during the year. John F. Kennedy provides parents with information regarding the Common Core Stand-ards, Title I, state requirements and local academic assessments in addition to use of technol-ogy and report cards every quarter to monitor their child’s progress and participate in deci-

sions related to the education of their students.

John F. Kennedy provides training materials to parents on curriculum, strategies to help their children at home and technology in our parent nights and teacher-parent conferences during the school year. We also provide training materials through our Parent Resource Cen-ter located in the Students Services Department. We connect with community partners to

provide workshops on parenting skills in the spring.

Staff is updated on Title I requirements during staff meetings and Parent Involvement strate-

gies during the school year.

JFK invites all families to join the JFK Parent and Family Engagement Committee

to share ideas and ways to involve others to build partnerships with school, fami-

lies, and the community. The team will meet four times during the school year,

but parents and family members can also submit their ideas or suggestions at any

school activities and meetings, as well as through our family surveys or by con-

tacting the school. If you would like to learn more about the Parent and Family
