FAIRWIND FROST DANCE

Get excited! Fairwind’s very first dance of the year is coming on December 22nd. Come on in and join the fun at the Fairwind Frost. There will be 3 rooms to enjoy. Students have a choice to go to the dance, a movie, or a games room (no electronics). Tickets will be on sale from December 12-16 for $3 each. So grab a friend and start dancing, watching and gaming. FAIRWIND WARM CLOTHING DRIVE

The season is for giving and the holidays are quickly approaching, so the Fairwind community is lending a helping hand to the less fortunate. This year, the Me to We Club has planned a warm clothing drive to help those in need right here in our local community.

The Warm Clothing Drive is being held from December 5 to December 19th. Please bring in new winter clothing such as hats, gloves, coats, boots, scarves, socks and blankets to your Prime Time. These items will be picked up by the Salvation Army On December 19th and will be distributed through Peel Shelter and Family Services to help keep those in need in our community keep warm this winter season.

SCHOOL SUCCESS UPDATE

At Fairwind, we are committed to continuous improvement. In our November Newsletter we shared information about our plan to continue to support student achievement in mathematics through our Numeracy Theory of Action. We know that students learn best in an inclusive, respectful and welcoming environment. To help build and sustain a positive climate at Fairwind we have also developed a Theory of Action to help guide our work in this regard. Our Bullying Prevention and Intervention Theory of Action is:

If we encourage staff to incorporate a Restorative Mindset within their practices, then we will improve the collective sense of a safe, positive school climate by increasing positive and collaborative student behaviours.

JUNIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to the Junior Girls Volleyball team who travelled to Camilla Public School on Nov 24, 2016 for their tournament. The girls played very well and were first after the round robin giving them a position in the Championship game. The girls remainded undefeated and won the tournament.

FAIRWIND STUDENT PARLIAMENT NEWS

Elections

GUESS WHAT? Fairwind just had their election for parliament. Two students from each Prime Time were chosen to represent their Prime Time. These students keep their class up to date on what events are happening around the school. Prime Times are divided into different colour houses: red, yellow, and blue. There are 3 leaders in each colour house for each grade level. Some of these Prime Time reps decided that they wanted to be a house leader for their colour house. These students gave speeches and the other students from the colour house chose the leaders for each grade level. The colour house leaders for each grade are:

Red House Julia L. Grade 6 Abbie H. Grade 7 Caitlyn H. Grade 8

Blue House Ahmed E. in Grade 6 Daniyah P. in Grade 7 Prachee N. in Grade 8

Yellow House Amin H. Grade 6 Shahmeer H. Grade 7 Samiksha B. Grade 8

Committees The committees have been chosen for Student Parliament which include Public Relations, dance, talent show and spirit. The Public Relations committee work on the Fairwind newsletter and other forms of communication. The Dance committee works with teachers to organize fun dances. Each year at Fairwind, there is a Talent show, and all the Parliament members in that commitee help out and put it together for everyone to enjoy. The Spirit committee choose special spirit days and special events like Candygrams in which Fairwind students can participate. Spirit days are a good way to earn points for your colour house if you show your spirit. Who doesn’t want their house to be in the lead?

We are looking forward to having an awesome year at Fairwind by having great spirit days and fun opportunities

that involve everyone.

Candy Grams

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock! The holiday season is here! It’s time to give back to friends and teachers with Candy Grams! You can buy your Candy Grams for 50 cents during lunch from Monday, December 12th to Friday, December 16th. They will be sold by door F right by the lunchroom washrooms. The grade 7 and 8’s will be able to buy them during the first half of lunch and grade 6’s will be able to buy during the second half. Make sure you buy your Candy Grams while quantities last! Start thinking about some Merry messages to write on your slip of paper which will be attached to your Candy Cane. Enjoy your Candy Grams with your loved ones and have a safe, warm holiday season! See you in 2017 Falcons!

Spirit Days

Man those were pretty rad spirit days, don’t you think? Mustaches and house colors are the new thing! The competition’s heating up, guys. You better step up your game. We just had Mustache Day. So what’s next? I bet our spirit committee will be right on top of that. Can you think of anything? Suggest ideas to a spirit committee member and your idea might just be chosen! This time, why don’t you join us! Gather points for your color house and your flag will be waving high and proud above all the others (you also get the right to brag). If you want your color house to be the “chosen one”, you better jump in this massive heap of fun!

Listen closely to the announcements for the next spirit day and maybe, just maybe, your color house will be the

champion!

FAIRWIND’S REMEMBRANCE

CEREMONY “LEST WE FORGET”

Fairwind’s Remembrance Ceremony was held on Friday, 11th November at 10:00am. This was the culmination of many weeks of preparation, with the students understanding and experiencing the creative process that occurs when creating a Remembrance Ceremony.

The entrance of the gym was adorned with Mrs. Policelli’s and Mr. Tennant’s displays of books, pictures, and memorabilia of the First and Second World War. The gym was decorated with wreaths. The Ceremony began with a procession that walked into the gym, while the Grade 8 Band was playing “Danny Boy”, under the direction of Mrs. Darrigo.

The procession was lead by the Colour Guard, Mr. Ieraci, and our guests. They were followed by all those who would be leading us in our Ceremony. The Colour Guard were Adda, Keira and Jordan. Our two Master of Ceremonies, Aima and Prachee, welcomed us all to the Ceremony, shared some thoughtful ideas, and welcomed our honoured guests. Our guests this year were Retired Honorary Colonel W.H. Pete Porter, Corporal Howard Adams, Warrant Officer Troy John, Mrs Catherine Holland of the Mississauga Sports Council, and Mr. Mike Toth, an author, and one of the Hall of Fame recipients in the Mississauga Sports Council’s Hall of Fame.

The Programme continued with Fatima and Schynxe helping us to honour Former Sergeant Dorothy Jamieson, who sadly died in 2015. Mrs. Jamieson attended many Fairwind Remembrance Ceremonies, during which time she presented Fairwind with many gifts.

Warrant Officer Troy John was introduced by Hannah and Jasmine. Warrant officer Troy John represented today’s military and shared his presentation on the history and present time of our Canadian

Military. Noreen, Adda, Kavisha, and Thenuka presented their information and PowerPoint on the First World War, and in particular the battle at Vimy Ridge, which we are commemorating this year.

Tayyib and Rishi introduced Retired Honorary Colonel (W.H.) Pete Porter, who was the Honorary Colonel of the 437 Squadron. He shared his experiences during the Second World War, and told us what the 437 Squadron’s tasks are today. Retired Honorary Colonel, a veteran of the Second World War, is one of the last remaining pilots who flew a plane in the 437 Squadron during the war.

Samiksha and Raiyana introduced Corporal Howard Adams, who explained the work of the Royal Mounted Police and emphasised how important it is to remember all those who have sacrificed their lives while fighting for Canada.

At different times between the presentations, the following students presented poetry: Sasha, Hari, Fareeha, Rohaab, Gayatri, Roji, Swarnika, Abi, and Kanu. Muhammad, Zain and Hazim were our technology operators and screen and curtain operators.

We then began our Time of Tribute. After Aima and Prachee had explained the different parts of our Time of Tribute, we were led by our Colour Guard who marched on to the stage carrying our flags, and they stood to attention during our Time of Tribute. Gayatri, Roji, Swarnika, and Abi presented “In Flanders Fields.” We then listened to “The Last Post,” stood silently for our two minutes of silence, listened to “The Reveille,” listened to Schynxe and Meira sharing the Act of Remembrance. Lastly, we sang our national anthem as the Grade 8 Band played “O Canada” under the direction of Mrs. Darrigo.

The Colour Guard returned to their places, and Abeer introduced the Remembrance Choir. The Remembrance Choir sang “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. They were accompanied by Jason.

Our Ceremony was concluded by Aima and Prachee sharing some final thoughts, and then the procession led by the Colour Guard exited the gym to “The Maple Leaf Forever”. There was a reception for our guests and staff in the staff room.

We thank the students for being a respectful audience.

We also congratulate Aima and Samiksha for placing first and third in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poster Contest.

We express many thanks to the many staff and students who were involved in so many ways, creating, and helping us to remember our 2016 Remembrance Ceremony in Fairwind’s 25

th Anniversary year.

Respectfully submitted by Mrs. A. Shuttleworth.

WINTER BUS SAFETY

The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months.

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening.

Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is.

Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus

HELP YOUR FAMILY STAY WARM THIS WINTER

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to

replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Invest in thick socks to keep your feet warm. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself

when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an

extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. A balanced diet will also help keep you warm and healthy in

the winter. If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.
