JULY
School Supplies Help Students SucceedEach year, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth Country School system (WS/FCS) has many community groups that provide school supplies for kids in need. The most needed items, according to school social worker teams who work with these children, are backpacks, composition notebooks, notebook paper, markers, crayons, and glue sticks. And despite the community’s generosity, each year there are still plenty of kids left in need.
The only way the school system has to estimate how many students will need this assistance is looking to the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. More than half–roughly 55% of 55,000 students–come from families that qualify, meaning that their family is struggling financially.
Last year, after the community school supplies drives concluded, WS/FCS social workers provided supplies to an additional 782 students. Unfortunately, between the community drives and WS/FCS efforts, they were still not able reach all of those in need.
Here at Arbor Acres, we’ve decided to help combat these statistics close to home by providing school supplies for our employee Artists’ children, elementary age through high school.
You can support this endeavor in several ways:
1. Provide school supplies per a list provided byWellness Arts. Drop supplies off in the box outsidePiner Hall by Monday, July 15.
2. Make a monetary donation for Wellness Arts topurchase supplies by placing check in red box atthe tunnel entrance beside the bulletin board nearCorpening elevator lobby.
3. Come to our workday on Friday, July 26 from1:00–3:00 pm in Piner Hall to help pack thesupplies. RSVP with Janice at ext. 1266 or viaWellzesta if you plan on lending a helping hand.Remember, many hands make light work!
4. Join us in Piner Hall Thursday, August 8 from3:00–5:00 pm to help distribute the supplies, andjoin in on our back-to-school celebration withArtists and their children!
