IJ O W , when, where and why school money is spent and why such a considerable sum is needed are questions that arise

to haunt any Board of Education. Cost erf education is a bugbear in any municipal budget; often more than the real share rf the blame is placed on the schools for the high taxes.

Tuesday night, the board began determinedly to settle the matter of how much money Lyndhurst spends on its schools— an3~Tiow that” Hin compares w tfh eb sfo f education iJT oAef municipalities. } /

Reeves D. Batten, supervising principal, submitted an il luminating report. Ten cf the largest communities in Berget Omnty were chosen and with them Lyndhurst’s school figures were compared.

The report showed that Lyndhurst’s schools, efficiendy con ducted, cost little compared to costs in other communities. Direct figures from the report are quf«ed in the news columns today Read them and see for yourself how Lyndhurst rates with othei municipalities, and why the local schrol tax rate is so high. ,

C EATING the children has been a problem that boards of thc last decade have had to grapple with. The last grade school

erected in Lyndhurst was the Roosevelt School; that the system is short-roomed has long been recognized. Mr. Batten has point' id out again and again the children are handicapped by lack of proper facilities. In every school, every vacant room it utilized In the high school, the auditorium, the stage, the cafeteria are put into useu * ’ S ^ U P V

The boakl discussed the question Tuesday night, then de- cided again to seek use of vacant rooms in the Town Hall and Library. The idea was advanced last year, but frowned upon following a discussion with the Board of Commissioners. The education group's decision to again plan for use of the municipal rooms shows that the board is really striving to honestly solve the problem at as little cost as possible.
