1.1 School Description
1. Introduction
3
Boyne Hill Church of England Infant & Nursery School is an urban school, serving 250 3 - 7year olds.
There are 53 adults employed in the school as well as a number of work placement studentsand volunteers who attend on a regular basis.
The school is surrounded by housing and small businesses. The site is bounded on all sidesby roads and we have only 8 parking bays in our very small car park. To cater for anyonewith a disability needing access to the school we create a temporary disabled parking spaceas and when needed. Although we have 10 children with statements of special need thereare none who either need or are entitled to school transport.
There is only 1 permanent pedestrian entrance to the school from Rutland Road, a normallyquiet residential street, although for security reasons we open the gates onto Boyn HillRoad in the middle of the day to provide access to the Nursery. This avoids parents havingto cross the playground while the older children are outside over the lunchtime period.
There are double yellow lines and Keep Clear markings on Rutland Road immediately outsidethe school gates.
We do have a bus route (No.5) that runs close to the school along Boyn Hill Road.
The school day for Foundation Stage 2 and Key Stage 1 children is from 8.45am - 3.20pm.Foundation Stage 1 sessions are 8.45 - 11.45am and 12.25 - 3.25pm. The Breakfast Clubruns at All Saints Junior School from 7.45 - 8.30am and the After School Club runs atBoyne Hill School from 3.20 - 6.00pm daily.
We work with All Saints Junior School to provide before and after school facilities.Every day a walking bus operates between the two schools bringing Boyne Hill children fromAll Saints Breakfast Club and All Saints children to Boyne Hill School for the After SchoolClub.

PUPIL, STAFF AND PARENT SURVEYSWe carried out class surveys to find out how the pupils come to school. All staff were given an individual survey and parents were asked to fill in a slip onthe school newsletter to say, if appropriate, why they need to bring their car toschool instead of walking, cycling or scooting.
We have frequent items in the weekly newsletter to parents, asking them toconsider leaving their cars at home and either walking or using pedal power toget to school. If there is a particular reason why they need to come in a car wealways ask them to park up to half a mile away and walk the last little bit of thejourney.
This survey was carried out in February 2013. The completed questionnairesare available in school.

2.2 Issues & Problems
2. Current Situation
5
Car exhausts contribute to air pollution and affect children’s health. Children sitting in cars in slow moving traffic face 2 - 3 times more pollution than pedestrians
Levels of physical activity are declining in children and childhood obesity is increasing
Parents concerns about road traffic danger
REASONS WHY MORE PARENTS DRIVE THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL:(Identified through questionnaires February 2013 and post code plots)
Many parents bring their children into us before continuing on to either the playgroup, All Saints Junior School, other local schools or to their own place of work
Parents fear for the safety of unaccompanied children and ours are very young!
Some families do live a distance away and with a car available do not want to pay expensive bus fares
ACCESS ISSUES:
There are no cycle routes anywhere near the school but we do have enough bike rack spaces for 15 bikes / scooters and we are purchasing two scooter pods in March 2013
The roads surrounding the school become congested making it unsafe for children to cross (there have been a number of near misses and one hit immediately outside school)
2. Current Situation
2.2 Issues & Problems
6
Access to neighbouring homes is sometimes blocked. This causes tension and misunderstanding between the school community and our neighbours
Some parents ignore the parking and waiting restrictions outside the school leading to a restricted view for staff and visitors entering and leaving the school site
Restricted access for emergency vehicles at busy times of the day, for both us and local residents
Coaches arriving at school for swimming lessons and trips have difficulty getting round the corner to collect the children
We have a limited number of spaces forbicycles and are in the process of ordering
some scooter pods (March 2013).
We have a single entrance to a very smallstaff car park.
2.3 Current Achievements
2. Current Situation
The school has both Green Flag and Healthy Schools awards. The Green Flag is in the processof renewal and the Travel Plan is part of the submission.WHAT WE ALREADY DO:
Awards for children walking / cycling to school through the RBWM STAR scheme
Sheltered waiting area for parents and children in the playground (which we would like to extend)
Regular participation in Walk to School Weeks to raise the profile
Participation in the National Big Pedal event
Regular reminders in the school newsletter about parking restrictions and courtesy
Monitoring the parking in front of the school each morning
Links with local community Wardens
Walking buses from All Saints Junior School, linking the Breakfast and After School Clubs
Surveys of Parents
Education through assemblies and curriculum time
Road Safety education for all the children
Off-road cycling training for children (being replaced by scooter training)
Participation in occasional promotions such as Road Safety calendar competitions
Links with local councillors and residents to improve road safety around the school - successes to date include bollards on street corners and a 20mph speed limit
Highway Code information provided about parking restrictions
Photos of badly parked cars in newsletters and on posters

3. Preferred Situation
3.1 Aims of our Travel PlanUltimately, we are trying to get as many of our school community members aspossible, to leave their cars at home and either walk, ride, scoot or use publictransport to get to and from school. There are daily parking issues immediately outside the school due to there beingno passing space and very limited parking.
8
3.2 Targets for our Travel PlanSMART TARGETS:To ensure that at least 50% of Foundation Stage parents make at least onejourney per week without using their car, by Summer 2013.
To reduce regular car use by Key Stage 1 parents to below 30% by Summer 2013.
3.3 Benefits of our Travel PlanThe whole school community benefits from less traffic on the roads
The air quality improves and our carbon footprint is reduced
Parents and children benefit from having time to spend in the fresh air, talking about their plans for the day, what they can see on their journey etc
The local community benefits from having less traffic causing congestionat the busiest times of the day
