Your school & New Zealand Red Cross

Together making a difference in your community and overseas

Page 2: Schools Fund raising Kit 2013

New Zealand Red Cross is many things to many people – a hot meal, a safe drive to hospital or knowledge that our aid workers are helping overseas in true Kiwi style.

New Zealand Red Cross provides community–based services everywhere, everyday, right here in your community: meals on wheels, first aid training, hospital transfer services and free programmes for schools – People Savers and Save-a-Mate.

When disaster strikes in New Zealand, Red Cross mobilises its volunteers. Immediately following the Christchurch earthquakes Red Cross had 289 volunteers working 6,800 hours.

Helping around the world

As part of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation we have a truly global reach. Whenever you see a terrible natural disaster or conflict on TV, on the internet or in the papers, it’s likely Red Cross will be there helping people right at the heart of the problem, just as we did when disaster struck in Christchurch.

As we often say, disasters don’t discriminate – neither do we.Last year, New Zealand Red Cross sent 37 aid workers overseas to support 48 missions.

Why your help is needed NowSo Red Cross can be on the spot straight away when there is a crisis, we need funds all year round so we are ready to respond when disaster strikes.

We can’t do this work without financial support and it’s for this reason we need you to lend us a hand.

SEE RED in MayIn May we will be running a nationwide campaign to try to raise sorely needed funding for Red Cross activities throughout our communities in New Zealand.

The campaign is called

why – because Red Cross delivers crucial services in communities everywhere everyday throughout New Zealand and overseas.

In 2012, New Zealand Red Cross:

delivered 646,918 meals on wheels to elderly people throughout the country

transported 13,269 patients (who had no other means of transport) to medical appointments

delivered 832 People Savers courses to 19,878 children to give them the skills to treat an injury before medical help arrives

produced 4,500 Winter Warmer packs for struggling Christchurch residents

supported crises across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific with 48 missions overseas.

Everywhere, everyday

Meals on wheels

“People have meals on wheels for all sorts of reasons, some have had meals delivered for years and often the drivers are the only visitor all day and they are so grateful for human contact.”

Mr Ward, Meals on wheels coordinator, Tauranga

People Savers

“It’s about helping someone when they need you.”

Jackson Haines, age nine

Refugee services

“New Zealand gave us hope to live and restart our lives.”

Zabeh Gazizada, a former refugee from Afghanistan who currently lives in Christchurch and, at only 23 years old, owns his own business

International aid

“The aid programme works not only to provide immediate help to the sick and wounded, but also ensures vulnerable communities have the right skills and means to look after themselves once the aid has gone.”

Barbara Turnbull, Aid worker

Landmines

“Even with a disability, you can do almost anything, but it does take hard work. Me, I plan to go to University to study to be a Doctor. In the village where I live there is only one doctor for 6,000 people. We need more doctors.”

Tesfahun Hailu, Landmine victim

May 8 is the

I See Red School ChallengeI SEE RED Challenge Awards – The schools in each region that raise the greatest amount of funds during our annual appeal month of May. There will be two awards per region: Greatest total funds raised and Most funds per head.As well as this, outstanding efforts can be recognised with a young achievers award certificate for community spirit from New Zealand Red Cross.

why get involved? This appeal is a great chance to support your local community, as well as provide much needed funds to enable these programmes to continue. It is a great way to engage and involve pupils, in both school and community activities. The challenge encourages friendly, fun competition between schools within each of the New Zealand Red Cross regions.

New Zealand Red Cross provides the following programmes and services in schools and in your community. Your contribution will help us to continue providing these services.

School programmes People Savers: Free first aid training for 8–12–year–olds.

Save-a-Mate: A non-judgemental free programme designed to teach alcohol and drug awareness and first aid in relation to alcohol and other drug emergencies. The programme is designed to teach students how to respond to any adverse alcohol and drug incidents they may experience.

war Law: A unique programme for Years 12 and 13 students offering a chance to learn about international humanitarian law and the Geneva conventions and the role Red Cross plays in protecting them.

First Aid: New Zealand Red Cross subsidises first aid training through both the Star and Gateway programmes.

In the local community Meals on wheels

Since 1951, Red Cross has been making meals on wheels deliveries to the elderly or housebound around New Zealand. People who are confined to home, live alone, are unable to get out to buy food or struggle to cook their own meals are visited each day. “It’s not so much the meal as it is a face coming to the door. They are mostly alone and just looking for someone to talk to,” says Doug Paterson, a volunteer meals on wheels driver.

Refugee resettlement Around the world tens of millions of people have been forced to flee their homes for nothing more than their race, religion or beliefs. Each year through the United Nations quota programme, New Zealand welcomes around 750 refugees, giving them the opportunity to build new lives in a safe place. On 10 December 2012, New Zealand Red Cross joined with Refugee Services Aotearoa to become the country’s primary refugee resettlement agency.

Red Hot HintsHere’s some fun fundraising ideas...

Street Collectors

Just two hours of a student’s time can make a real difference. To get involved as street collectors your school needs to contact your local New Zealand Red Cross area office 0800 RED CROSS, 0800 733 27677

Red Hot Glasses

Be the first to get your hands on a box of our brand new Red Glasses to sell in your school.

Kids will love them and it’ll get your fundraising off to a roaring start.

Be in to win – when kids get their glasses they can enter some online competitions. There will be some cool images on www.iseered.org.nz website to view through the glasses. The lenses will filter out other colours to reveal hidden images and kids will be in to win some fab prizes.

Donate $25 AND GET A BoX oF 50 for your school Children donate $2 for glasses.

One box of Red Glasses raises $75 which could provide 208 meals on wheels in your community or emergency supplies; a 20 litre jerry can for water, an emergency tarpaulin and an emergency family kitchen cooking set.

Seven boxes will raise $500 – this will cover the cost of a refugee pack for a refugee family when they arrive in New Zealand.

To order – orders and payment must be with New Zealand Red Cross by end of term 1 – Friday 19 April.

Order form – mail in with a cheque the Glasses Order Form in the pack or download from www.iseered.co.nz and fax in with details of online payment.

Here are some pretty simple events you could plan to raise funds. Choose what you feel comfortable doing or do something totally different.

Red Hot Bake Sale

Hold a bake sale with proceeds to New Zealand Red Cross. Make it really fun and have a Red theme – Red cups cakes, Lamingtons …

Page 9: Schools Fund raising Kit 2013

wear RED Day

Invite children to wear red with a donation of a gold coin. It may not sound a lot, but 400 children donating $2 will raise $800 which will fund 16 children to do a People Savers first aid course AND an emergency family kitchen cooking set.

RED Hot Disco

Organise a disco for the kids where they (and their parents) all wear red.

A small donation for entry will raise funds.

RED Hot Quiz

Have a quiz night – with a gold coin donation. Attached are some questions (and the answers) about Red Cross which you could use in your quiz.

RED Hot Parents and Kids Triathlon

Organise a triathlon for parents and kids – you could even get the surrounding schools to become involved. Entry fees go to New Zealand Red Cross – have certificates for all those who dress in red for the event.

Sponsor a teacher – Red Hair Day

Kids pledge money for teachers to dye their hair red.

RED Hot – Art Auction

Get creative and have the children paint, sculpt and print artwork around the theme “I See Red”. Then auction them off. Make a nice evening of it: charge a small entry fee and all proceeds go to New Zealand Red Cross.

Teaching AidTo find out more about New Zealand Red Cross and the role we have played and continue to play in our communities around New Zealand and overseas, go to YouTube – New Zealand Red Cross – Strategy 2020.

After viewing it, use it to start students thinking about:

Are there people in need in New Zealand? In what circumstances are they in need?

Do you know where Red Cross has helped someone you know?

What value does an organisation such as New Zealand Red Cross play in helping our communities?

Should every New Zealander contribute to care of people in need in our communities?

Should employers look at the community involvement a prospective employee has as part of a job interview?

How could students lend their support to New Zealand Red Cross?

How does Red Cross help New Zealanders prepare for the unexpected?

Why is it important to have charitable organisations in New Zealand? Is this something we need as a society or should Government be responsible?
