IntroductionCouncillor Doreen StephensonLincolnshire Champion for the London 2012 Games

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

I am delighted to introduce you to your Resource Pack containing lots of information about how to celebrate the Egyptian Paralympic Team during their Pre-Games Training Camp this summer.

From Saturday 18th – Friday 24th August 2012, athletes from the Egyptian Paralympic Team will prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games here in Lincolnshire.

The team of 53 will be based in Lincoln, and will train at three sports venues across the county; the University of Lincoln, the Princess Royal Sports Arena in Boston and the Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth. The team will compete in Athletics, Powerlifting, Sitting Volleyball and Table Tennis.

In the run-up to the Egyptian Paralympic Team visit, and during their one week stay in Lincolnshire, we want as many people from across the county to get involved with the team. The Lincolnshire Steering Group for the London 2012 Games has developed this resource pack to help your school celebrate the Egyptian Team visit to ensure your students are part of this once in a lifetime experience.

As well as ideas for celebrating the team’s visit, you will find useful information about Egypt, a background to the Paralympic Team and advice about Egyptian culture, society and traditions.

I look forward to hearing how your school embraces the London 2012 Paralympic Games and celebrates the Egyptian Paralympic Team in Lincolnshire. Have fun!

Councillor Doreen Stephenson

Egyptian Society, Culture and TraditionsReligion

Islam is practised by the majority of Egyptians and governs their personal, political, economic and legal lives.

Among certain obligations for Muslims are to pray five times a day - at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and evening. The exact time is listed in the local newspaper each day and from the top of the Mosque’s minaret, the Muezzin calls individuals to prayer at these times.

At prayer time, wherever he is, a Muslim kneels, faces towards Mecca and says his prayers. Mecca in Saudi Arabia is considered the centre of the Islamic Faith.

Friday is the Muslim holy day and everything is closed. Many companies also close on Thursday, making the weekend Thursday and Friday.

Traditional Dress

In Arabia the women wear long dresses called darra’as, or kandura. Often these are embroidered with gold or silver thread around the neck, sleeves and hem.

When women appear in public, they always wear a black cloak (aba) draped over their head which covers them to the ground. Most women in Arabia wear veils in public, some face masks. They also wear them at home in the presence of male visitors.

Young girls do not use veils or masks, but cover their heads with a black scarf edged with gold thread. It is called a bukhnag.

7

Dress Etiquette

Business attire is formal and conservative. Dress well if you want to make a good impression.

Men should wear dark coloured, lightweight, conservative business suits, at least to the first meeting, and should avoid wearing visible jewellery, especially around the face and neck.

Women must be careful to cover themselves appropriately. Skirts and dresses should cover the knee and sleeves should cover most of the arm.

Family Values

• The family is the most significant unit of Egyptian society• Kinship plays an important role in all social relations• The individual is always subordinate to the family, tribe or group• The family consists of both the nuclear and the extended family

Social Class

Social class is very apparent in Egypt since it determines your access to power and position. The social class an Egyptian is born into dictates their everyday life and the opportunities they will have. There are three social classes: upper, middle, and lower.

Status is defined more by family background than by absolute wealth, and there is little social mobility.

Organise a mini Paralympics

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

Organise a mini-Paralympic Game at your school or college ahead of the Games.

A mini-Paralympic Games could involve having students attempt physical activities that simulate those performed by Paralympians. Your school or college could schedule their mini-Paralympic Games on a different day of the week allowing equipment to be shared. Within a single school, successive classes and/or groups of students could be rotated through a set of stations set up in the sports hall. Depending on the level of interest and availability of resources, a mini-Paralympic Games could be organised merely as a participatory event or as a competitive team event complete with timing/scoring and recognition for excellence.

Alternatively, students could participate in activities with imposed limitations to simulate certain disabilities and Paralympic events such as:

• curling from a chair(wheelchair curling)• travelling a set distance with the use of only one leg (races for amputees)• using floor scooters and mini-sticks or students’ hands to create a floor game (an adapted

version of ice sledge hockey)• completing an obstacle course with a blindfold on while using a classmate for assistance

(ski racing for blind athletes)

Or why not try some of the Egyptian team sports – Athletics, Powerlifting , Table Tennis and Sitting Volleyball.

Celebrate with a 2012-inspired fete

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

Celebrate by enhancing or organising an event that the community can take part in to help celebrate the 2012 Games.

This could be an existing event such as a fête or sports festival that could offer more to all the community by adding elements of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games such as sport or culture, or it may be a new event that your community has always wanted to organise.

Ideas include: • Family bike ride• Fitness Challenges - bike, run, row• Fun Run around the local sports field• Hold an Opening or Closing Ceremony at your fête• Encourage local artists or bands to take part• Hold a London 2012 Quiz around the Olympics, Paralympics, athletes and/or Torch Relay• Create your own Torch Relay around the school or village

You could even contact your local district council to see if any funding is available to celebrate the Games in your area.

12

Hold an Opening or Closing Ceremony

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

A party atmosphere is a feature of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Each Olympic Games has an opening ceremony during which the sports stadium is filled with music, singing, dancing and fireworks. A closing ceremony in the same spirit takes place on the last day of the Games. The opening and closing ceremonies are an invitation to discover the culture of the country hosting the Games, so why not centre your idea around the Egyptian team that will be visiting your local area?

What could you include in your Opening or Closing Ceremony?

• Invite a local MP, Head Teacher, or local sports star to give a speech and open the event• Invite a school or community band or choir to perform• Invite a school or community dance group to perform • Ask each school/class/community to write pledges based on the Olympic and Paralympic

Values which can then be read out• Schools/classes/community to design and make banners which can be showcased at the

event• Schools/classes/community to make flags which can be showcased during an opening or

closing flag bearing parade• Olympic torch relay race where children/young people compete in a relay holding their

torches • Dress each team in the colour of an Olympic ring and carry flags which contain those colours

in an opening or closing ceremony parade • Invite school reporters to become sports reporters for the day• Invite school photographers to become photographers and take photos of the opening and

closing ceremonies as well as the events• Invite art groups to create art work which can be displayed during the day• Invite a mascot from a company to attend and be part of the parades• Ask art classes to design and make medals which can be given out at the closing ceremony• Celebrate the Egyptian Team by performing a cultural dance or song from Egypt 13

Flags to represent the 2012 values

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

Learn the seven Olympic and Paralympic values by designing flags.

Get everyone in your school/college to design a flag to represent the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values. The values are:

• Friendship• Courage• Determination• Inspiration• Equality• Excellence• Respect

Students could wave their flags during assemblies, hold a flag parade, incorporate it into your an-nual Sports Day or use them to create a big display.

You have already taken the first step by reading this planning guide and thinking about your World Sport Day celebrations. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you order yourevent pack.

The event pack will contain some exciting London 2012 branded materials to decorate the school in time for your World Sport Day celebrations. Make sure Monday 25th June 2012 is in your school calendar, and in the diaries of parents, governors, other schools and members of the local community.

Have you seen the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week planning guide and information sheets?

The theme for this year is ‘Stage your games’ so make sure you work with the PE Department to ensure that World Sport Day and National School Sport Week activities are planned across the whole school. There are many ways to offer different sports and activities, as well as ways to celebrate success and achievement – find out more, sign up and download the resources at www.schoolsportweek.org.

To help you move into the planning phase, why not consult with teachers from other curriculum areas, your school council or the parent-teacher association (PTA) to ensure that everyone is involved in the planning of your celebrations. Recruit a team of people to help you plan and deliver your school’s World Sport Day celebrations. It could include membership of:

• Young people – possibly the school or student council;• Colleagues – staff from different curriculum areas;• Young leaders – students who are young ambassadors or peer mentors; • Wider school community – governors, PTA or local community groups; • Or other groups – possibly the National School Sport Week organising committee

Decide which elements of the day your school will take part in and start the planning!

World Sport Day is your chance to get the whole school involved in celebrating the cultures that will be coming to London and the UK this summer.

Opening ceremony

Open World Sport Day and National School Sport Week with your own opening ceremony. World Sport Day will provide all schools with a special opportunity to hear more about staging an 16

Egyptian Paralympic Team in LincolnshireSaturday 18th - Friday 24th August 2012Boston | Lincoln | Louth

opening ceremony from the experts planning the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies. You will be able to access film clips, fact sheets, hints, tips and activity ideas to help to plan all of the different elements of your own ceremony. There will also be a chance to learn the London 2012 Mascot Dance and include a performance in your own opening ceremony.

Global showcase

We are inviting you to celebrate the cultures of your favourite teams and nations from around the world by hosting your own Global showcase. Why not showcase the sport, food, languages, music and dance of your teams and nations? You can do this in your classrooms, canteen, assembly hall or on your school field.

Fun with flags

This is a unique moment within your World Sport Day celebrations to get together with others and create your chosen teams’ flags. We will provide you with some innovative ways of creating your flags and it is then up to you to show your support to the competing nations of the London 2012 Games. When will your flag moment be? How will you produce the flags? Be as creative as you want and share the must-see moment with your school community, the local media and us.

Invite your guests and decorate your school/college

• Who are you going to invite to your World Sport Day celebrations? Students, parents, members of the local community, newspaper and media, local dignitaries… make sure you have enough time to get the invites out to everyone.

• Are there ways you could work with other local schools on your celebration? Maybe there are members of your local community who could help you plan and deliver the content of your Global Showcase?

• It’s a celebration so you need to decorate your classroom/school accordingly! We’ll provide you with your own event pack full of branded materials and you can create your own decorations with flags, banners and bunting from templates we will provide. This is a great opportunity to showcase and display the work your school has done on internationalism and sport this year.
