2. INTRO From England come prominent figures inthe field of science and mathematicsincluding Sir Isaac Newton, MichaelFaraday, Robert Hooke among others. Science and technology in the UnitedKingdom has a long history, producingmany important developments in the field. 3. As the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Englandwas home to many significant inventors of the late18th century and early 19th. 4. The British Industrial Revolution is characterized bydevelopments in the areas of textilemanufacturing, mining, metallurgy and transport driven by thedevelopment of the steam engine. 5. The 19th century saw astonishing developments intransportation, construction, and communication technologiesoriginating in Europe, especially in Britain. The Steam Engine which had existed since the early 18thcentury, was practically applied to bothsteamboat and railway transportation. The first purpose built railway line opened between Manchesterand Liverpool in 1830, the Rocket locomotive of RobertStephenson being one of the first working locomotives used onthe line. Telegraphy also developed into a practical technology inthe 19th century to help run the railways safely. 6. The building of therailway network was themajor achievement of theVictorian period, changingfor ever both socialpatterns and the landscapeof Britain. 7.
