Wilson Compton, MD, MPE Dr. Wilson Compton is the Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) of the National Institutes of Health. Over his 25 year career, Dr. Compton has been widely published and cited, is a highly sought-aſter speaker, and has received numerous awards, including the Health and Human Services Secretary’s Awards for Meritorious Service in 2013 and Distinguished Service in 2014, among many others. Notable is that prescription drug misuse can affect both patients directly receiving medications and patients’ friends and family who indirectly receive medications. Key responses include primary prevention, reducing excess opioid prescribing, saving lives acutely with naloxone, improved treatment and recovery services for the underlying addiction, and research to inform prevention and treatment efforts.
