Science @ The Bromfords School

and Sixth Form College

Science is a popular subject at The Bromfords School. We have a team of committed

teachers, well supported by both technicians and also learning support assistants. The

students are taught in well-equipped, modern laboratories.

Key Stage 3 – Science

At Key Stage 3, all students follow the Collins scheme. This introduces the students to a wide

variety of scientific issues and is linked to the .National Curriculum. The scheme incorporates a

significant amount of practical activities to engage the students. It is backed up by interactive

resources such as animations, quizzes and practice questions.

The students are taught in form groups in year 7 then set for years 8 and 9. Throughout the

key stage students are assessed using a variety of methods to ensure they are achieving in

line with their target grades. Assessments take place during the term after each module with

an examination at the end of each term.

Achievement of students at the end of Key Stage 3 is in line with their target ****

A’levels in science subjects are popular at Bromfords, with students applying from other schools and

colleges and from our own year 11.

We currently offer A’levels in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. All three are taught following the AQA

board specification.

From 2013, the students will be assessed externally only at the end of year 13 but will complete

practical examinations twice in the two years.

Key Stage 4 - Science

At Key Stage 4 students follow the OCR 21st Century Science. This is assessed externally from 2013

by examinations at the end of the course and by a controlled practical assessment.

Our top 60 scientists are offered the chance to follow the Triple Science pathway which enables them

to gain three GCSE in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They have one external assessment at the

end of year 11 and a controlled assessment.

The other students follow the Double Science pathway, gaining two science GCSEs. They have an

examination at the end of year 10- Core Science and one at the end of year 11- Additional Science.

Regular internal assessment and intervention ensure that the majority of our students reach their FFT

target grades.

Our results are excellent. For example in 2011 100% of our Triple Science students gained an A*-C

with most ******gaining the higher grades and a significant number of students choose to stay on at

Bromfords to complete their A’levels.
