An exhibition at London's ScienceMuseum explores the future ofautonomous mobility, and thedesigns that are paving the way.Curator Margaret Campbell selectsfive pieces from the show andreveals the stories behind them.

Driverless: Who is in Control?opened at the Science Museumearlier this month and will remainon view until October 2020.

While autonomous cars may seeman abstract concept to many drivers, the exhibition aims to show visitorsjust how much of this "seeminglyfuturistic" technology already exists.

The exhibition is made up of threezones: Land, Air and Water andlooks at developments in all theseareas.

Objects on display include the self-driving electric racing car, Robocar, and artist Dominic Wilcox's stained-glass Sleeper Car design for a futurewhere driverless technologies makeroads safe enough to drive vehiclesmade of glass.

According to Campbell, nearly 60years ago researchers predicted thatmost cars in Britain would beautonomous by 2010, but this is yetto be fully realised.

"The exhibition explores not just thetechnological challenges that mustbe overcome before this becomesreality, but the social, political, andethical ones as well," said thecurator.

"It asks timely questions about howmuch control we're willing to cede toAI machines and how driverlesstechnology could transform ourworld."

Here, Campbell explains five designsfrom the show that best illustratethe thinking behind autonomy:

Citroen DS19"The idea behind self-driving cars isolder than you might expect. Thisbeautiful Citroen DS19, from theScience Museum collection, is theoldest object in the exhibition, having been modified by the RoadResearch Laboratory (RRL) in 1960to guide itself along an electric cable.

"Early experiments on a test track inBerkshire, England, were such asuccess that the engineers behindthe project were allowed to installnine miles of cable under a stretch ofthe M4, near Reading. At the time, the RRL predicted that most cars inBritain would be self-driving by2010.

"Nearly 60 years later, this idearemains in the distant future.Driverless explores not just thetechnological challenges that mustbe overcome before this becomesreality, but the social, political, andethical ones as well."

Defibrillator delivery drone byKarolinksa Institute"When seconds count, self-flyingdrones could soon mean thedifference between life and death forvictims in cardiac arrest.

"The Karolinska Institute in Swedendeveloped a drone capable ofdelivering a defibrillator to someonein need 16 minutes beforeemergency medical services couldarrive by road. But, like many otherjurisdictions, Sweden does notcurrently allow anyone to fly a droneout of their sight.

"For many autonomous technologiescurrently in development, their slowintroduction to the market is theresult of regulatory challenges, nottechnological ones. In remote areas, drones like this one, and the manyothers like it currently indevelopment, could save lives.

"But some researchers predict thatby 2035, 175,000 drones could flyover cities like Paris every hour, raising questions about how we wantthis technology to be used and how

Hacked stop sign"The graffiti on this stop sign wasadded by a group of researchers whoset out to 'hack' the technology usedin self-driving cars. While vandalismon a stop sign doesn't change itsmeaning to a human driver, it makesit unrecognisable to a driverless carrelying on cameras and artificialintelligence (AI) to understand theworld around it.

"This experiment exposes some ofthe weaknesses of this technologyand raises questions about how agreater reliance on AI could leave usvulnerable to other forms ofhacking.

"Many organisations have seriousconcerns about what decisions AIcould be allowed to make in thefuture, especially moral or ethicalones. If we struggle to agree on whatis moral or ethical, how can wedecide what AI will be programmedto value?"

Roboat"Roboat is a floating platform thatuses lidar (laser imaging, detectionand ranging systems) to find its wayaround, transporting people andgoods, or collecting waste. Roboatscan also coordinate with oneanother to form bridges or eventspaces.

"The developers behind Roboatwant to reduce traffic on city streetsby shifting some of it onto water. They are currently testing thisprototype in Amsterdam, but itcould someday be used in cities likeVenice or Bangkok.

"Communication betweenautonomous vehicles is one of themost exciting parts of thistechnology. It could change howurban spaces are designed, makingcities less congested and allowing usto move around more efficiently."

The Autosub Long Range, knownas Boaty McBoatface"The Autosub Long Range wasaffectionately nicknamed BoatyMcBoatface, following a public votethat has made it the most well-known autonomous submarine inthe world.

"The model we have in theexhibition is to two-thirds scale –the real one is currently collectingcrucial data in the Antarctic that willhelp scientists better understandhow quickly our climate is changingand how much glaciers on thecontinent could contribute to sea-level rise.

"The National Oceanography Centrehopes that the Autosub could oneday make the world's first under-icecrossing of the Arctic, demonstrating how self-drivingvehicles are allowing us to explorenew places and do vital research."
