INFORMAL LEARNING STICKS Informal learning is active, engaging, and fun! More importantly, it has many benefits.

Studies show that students remember details from an informal learning experience, which strengthens and deepens knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Field trips improve critical thinking skills and make connections between art, science, math, and history.

75% of teachers said a Science

Museum field trip supported academic

standards.

Field trips are informal learning at its best.AND, THEY’RE FUN AND EASY TO PLAN!

A field trip is one of the most dynamic, fun-filled ways to engage your

students in hands-on learning. Field trips deliver lifelong memories, and

research shows that kids remember what they learn on a field trip. That’s

powerful! Field trips at the Science Museum of Minnesota are beyond

the ordinary. Our world-class exhibitions and galleries are one-of-a-kind.

The exhibitions, each paired with a film in our 90-foot, domed-screen

Omnitheater, provide a truly engaging, learning-filled day.

DESIGN ZONE EXHIBITION October 15–December 19 What does it take to create a video game, line up rhythms like the best DJs, or design a roller coaster? In Design Zone, your students can see how creative problem solvers use math to accomplish these amazing tasks. Solve real-world challenges by analyzing patterns and variables and exploring slope, scale, and ratios. Explore Design Zone’s many interactive and computer-based mini-exhibits. Ideal for Grades 5-8.

See the film, feel the flutter. Immerse your students in the true

story of a scientist’s 40-year journey to solve the mystery of the

monarch butterflies’ overwintering site in the remote mountains

of Mexico. The Flight of the Butterflies film takes you along on the

monarchs’ awe-inspiring, cross-continental journey. Students will

learn about this tiny marvel of nature that weighs less than a penny,

yet makes one of the longest migrations on Earth.

Meet the stars of the movie at our Butterfly House. Get up close and personal with local and tropical butterflies.

Students can feed the butterflies and watch them emerge from

chrysalises. For more information: smm.org/butterflies

A ticket to the moon? What does the future hold for humans

and space travel? Journey to Space, a special exhibition and

Omnitheater film, is a one-of-a-kind experience that seeks to

answer that question and more by exploring the challenges of living

and working in space. Unlike traditional space exhibits that focus

on the history of space travel, Journey to Space looks into current

and future exploration and what is possible.

Students, get ready for the future. Students will experience

interactive components like walking in a rotating space lab,

operating a robotic arm and drop tower, and other interactives that

examine propulsion, gravity, and weightlessness. Journey to Space

was designed and developed by the Science Museum of Minnesota

Supercharge your students’ science curiosity. Invite the Science Museum to your school.TEACHERS APPRECIATE THE CLASS PARTICIPATION AND SCIENCE FUN.

Our programs at your school are a great way to energize your science

curriculum. Our cross-curricular team of more than 25 professional teachers

and presenters travel throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Science

Museum instructors teach a broad range of subjects from chemistry and

technology to engineering and physics. Students experience hands-on science

through group assemblies and residencies that take place in your classroom.

How do we know that our programs are successful? We are invited back year

after year, and often hear that our visit is a highlight of the school year. To book

an assembly, residency, or to learn more, call us at 651-221-4748; or email

us at [email protected]. See page 18 for our regional tour schedule.

ASSEMBLIES Experience fun science concepts with dynamic demonstrations

Assemblies are a fun, high-energy, high-impact way to introduce or review core science concepts. Designed for large groups of up to 250 students, assemblies involve students directly. Student volunteers participate with props and demonstrations throughout the presentations. Program content and lengths are tailored to grade level: 40 minutes for K-2 and 50 minutes for grades 3-5. With the new emphasis on engineering standards, our elementary school engineering assemblies are growing in popularity.

RESIDENCIES Introduce and reinforce new science topics The Science Museum’s in-depth residencies can be a one-day visit or up to four days. Residencies create an opportunity for students to dive deeper into hands-on science. Residencies kick off with an assembly to introduce the topic or concept, which is then reinforced and built upon through additional instruction in individual classrooms. Science Museum instructors emphasize interactivity. Students solve problems using scientific equipment and apply science concepts to their daily lives.

Our high-quality instructors do all the planning, model effective techniques in your classroom, and offer you tips and ideas. Students enjoy having a special instructor and fun, hands-on sessions.

EiE TEACHER WORKSHOPS Increase your confidence in engineering and technology instruction in our teacher-focused workshops. Choose from either a three-hour EiE overview introduction or a more in-depth six-hour workshop with unit-specific training. For a schedule of our workshops go to smm.org/eie.

EiE FAMILY PROGRAM As a wrap-up to a residency or as a stand-alone event, you can host a Be Creative– Be an Engineer! family program at your school. Everyone brings their inner engineer to life by experimenting with materials, designing, and building objects that solve engineering challenges.

The Science Museum offers effective engineering curriculum training for your classroom.EiE PROMOTES STEM AND CONNECTS WITH LITERACY AND SOCIAL STUDIES.

Engineering is Elementary® (EiE) is a research-based, academic standards-

based curriculum and professional development for educators. It is designed

to integrate science and technology concepts with elementary school

engineering lessons. Teachers gain effective teaching techniques and

students make important learning connections.

EiE was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston. Over the

past four years, the Science Museum of Minnesota has worked with

nearly 500 teachers to implement EiE programs in more than 50 schools

in the Upper Midwest.

EVEN THE PRESIDENT IS IMPRESSED In 2011, Liesl Chatman, our director of teacher professional development, was named a White House Champion for Change for her work in promoting gender equity in STEM education. Prior to her work at the Science Museum, Liesl served in leadership positions in school district, university, and museum settings. She also taught in elementary schools in the Saint Paul Public Schools before embarking on her professional development career.

Science House provides district members in-depth professional development and an extensive lending library.OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE STEM LITERACY ACHIEVABLE FOR EACH AND EVERY STUDENT.

The mission of our teacher professional development group at

Science House is to increase STEM literacy and eliminate achievement

disparities in STEM education. We do this by providing customized services

for teachers and district leaders—institutes, workshops, and seminars—that

translate the best research-based approaches and theory into classroom

practice. Science House is also a place where teachers can find the best

hands-on STEM materials for use in the classroom.

Go to smm.org/sciencehouse/membership to learn if your district is a

Science House member. Members have access to our unrivaled lending

library and receive discounts on our customized professional development

institutes. They can participate in after-school workshops, consult with staff,

and gather in our space for small meetings. If your district isn’t a member,

you may want to encourage your school or district leadership to join.

Contact us for more information or to arrange a visit to Science House:

651-221-4563, [email protected].

Together, we’re making a difference! By supporting teachers, principals, and district leaders, we are helping achieve systemic changes in educational systems. Check out these gains in member districts where we’ve worked:

• Cedar Park STEM Magnet in Apple Valley, with 53% students of color, advanced from 23% proficient in science in 2008 to 58% in 2011. The gain was concurrent with three years of professional development programming.

• Glacier Hills Arts and Science Magnet in Eagan, with 38% students of color and 31% on Free/Reduced Lunch (F/RL), advanced from 33% proficient in science in 2008 to 73% in 2011.

• Fifth graders in Richfield, with 63% students of color and 47% students on F/RL, advanced from 16% proficient in science in 2010 to 40% in 2012.
