Science Olympiad 2015
Welcome to the Santiago Science Olympiad Team—1st Team Ever!
Highlights from Nationals 2014
Good website to use:www.Scioly.org
The Essentials
Competition is March 7th (a Saturday) Ramona High School (Riverside) 7am-7pm Practices: ??
At homeAt school
Team Shirts!
The Structure
25 events Most events are 2 person events, 50 min time
period Some events you build a device prior, then it
must perform at the competition Up to 15 team members
The Events
Think about your interests, strengths, knowledge, time available to prepare
You can participate in as many of the events as we have space for and the schedule allows for
Air Trajectory
Prior to competition design and construct a device that will launch projectiles (ie tennis balls) accurately
Anatomy and Physiology
Test format with a partner, 50 min
Covers Cardiovascular, integumentary, and immune systems
Astronomy
Test format with a partner, 50 min Use diagrams, charts, graphs etc to answer
questions
Bridge Building
Build a bridge prior to competition that will span 45 cm and suspend a bucket with weight.
Bridge must be all real wood and glued together
Chemistry Lab
Team of 2 will complete tasks and answer questions in a 50 min period
Focus is on processes of chemistry, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, and kinetics
Compound Machines
Activities and questions related to simple machines
5o min
Disease Detectives
Investigate a case study of disease, injury, health, and its effect on population growth
Collect data, interpret data, draw conclusions about an epidemic
Dynamic Planet
Teams of 2 will complete tasks related to physical and geological oceanography
Entomology
Teams of 2 with the help of a commercially published resource will identify insect specimens!
Experimental Design
Team of up to 3, 50 minutes
You will be given random supplies and need to create an experiment and write it up (mini-science fair project)
Forensics
Teams of 2 are given a crime scene scenario and suspects and must use scientific tests to solve the crime.
Fossils
Teams of 2 will use a field guide and their own knowledge to identify fossils at different stations.
Geologic Mapping
Teams of 2 will demonstrate understanding and use of topographic maps, geologic maps, and cross sections as related to maps, plate tectonics, geohazards.
Green Generation
Teams of 2 will analyze and interpret charts, graphs, and data on ecology, aquatic issues, air quality, and climate change
It’s About Time
Teams of 2 will construct a non-electrical device to measure time intervals between 10 and 300 seconds.
Teams will also complete a written test.
Mission Possible
Prior to competition teams will build and test a Rube Goldberg device that will lift and drop a golf ball into a jug and activate a buzzer.
Protein Modeling
Teams of up to 3 will use a computer to construct a physical model of a protein and complete an exam.
Scrambler
Teams of 2 will build (prior to event)a mechanical device which uses energy from a falling mass to transport an egg as quickly as possible without crashing into the terminal barrier.
Technical Problem Solving
Teams will gather and process data to solve problems on temperature, force, motion, etc
Wright Stuff
Prior to event design and construct a rubber-powered monoplane to achieve max time aloft.
Write It/Do It
Teams of 2. First partner is given a random object (made of items like Styrofoam, legos, paper cups, popsicle sticks etc) and must write a description of the object and how to build it (no symbols or diagrams).
After 25 minutes second partner will be given description and must build the object.
