Chromebooks Today
• You will record this unit’s vocabulary today using a chromebook and the website Quizlet
• I will dismiss you by rows to obtain your chromebook
• Return to your seat• Login and go to quizlet• Wait for directions from teacher
• In the quizlet search box type:
•6.P.3.1 Vocabulary Energy and Heat Transfer
• You will record the definitions for this unit directly in your notebook
• It includes 16 words• Use the flashcards to record the definitions• When you finish writing vocabulary words and
definitions, test yourself with the “learn, speller, test, scatter, and race” activities
Conduction, Convection, Radiation Rap
• You will receive a handout that describes this important concept
• Follow along and fill in the blanks with the correct information
• I will play the rap 2 times to make sure you can get all the information
• https://youtu.be/7Y3mfAGVn1c
Notes Today!
• You will take notes today in your notebook and on a graphic organizer
• 1st: You will write these notes directly into your interactive notebook
Write in notebook: Heat Transfer
• Energy (heat) can be transferred from 1 system to another or from a system to the environment in different ways (radiation, conduction, convection)
Write in notebook: Conduction
• If two things are touching … heat energy is probably moving by conduction.
• Heat energy will flow until both materials are the SAME temperature (reached equilibrium)
Write / Draw in notebook Examples of Heat Transfer
Write in notebook Conduction
• Energy (heat) flows throughout materials or across space from WARM objects to COOLER objects
Write in notebook Convection
• Heat travels through liquids and gases mostly by convection
• If something heated is rising or circulating in liquid or gas … probably convection.
Graphic Organizer
• You will receive a graphic organizer for the various types of energy
• Do not cut or fold the organizer
Graphic Organizer: Types of Energy
• Write the definitions for each type of energy on your graphic organizer in the
top box
• Homework: You will also draw ONE picture to help remind you of the different types of energy in your notebook
Write on the graphic organizer Electrical Energy Box
• when an electrical source such as a battery or generator is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device
Write on the graphic organizer Thermal Energy Box
• when a warmer object is in contact with a cooler one
For example…Hot coffee inside a mug warming cold hands in thewinter
Write on the graphic organizer Electromagnetic Box
• Radiation from the sun is energy which travels across distances by electromagnetic waves
Video on Discovery Ed
• “Heat Transmission: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation”
Write on the graphic organizer Conduction Box
• Heat traveling through solids when two things are touching
(pan on a stove burner; heat from burner travels into the metal pan, causing the temperature of the pan to rise)
Write on the graphic organizer Radiation Box
• Heat moving across the space between two objects that are not touching
(If you hold your hand over a pan or near an iron to see if it is hot)
Write on the graphic organizer Convection Box
• Heat traveling through liquids and gases in a circular pattern (convection currents)
Glue in notebook
• Glue your graphic organizer into your notebook
• Add entry in your Table of Contents and assign a page number:
“Types of Energy graphic organizer” Homework: Draw a picture to represent each form of energy
