Construction workers in Kindy!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL Term 3 is in full swing and the learning that has been going on in classes continues to amaze us! Every day we are greeted with smiling faces and children who are loving the activities and learning they are involved in. I want to acknowledge the wonderful staff we have that make this possible, they are so dedicated and go the extra mile for all our little Oakwooders! Last week, we were interviewing teachers for 2019 and I am pleased to say that we have recruited high quality teachers who understand the ‘Oakwood way’ and will fit in well as our school expands. I would like to thank all our families for your ongoing support, it is a privilege to work with you all for the benefit of your children.
Science Week We will be celebrating National Science Week on Thursday 16 August. Our children will be taking part in a range of activities which involve using their five senses. This will link nicely to the Bunnings Sensory Garden that will be unveiled on this day. Don’t forget to join us for a community lunch on this day at 11:15am!
P&C Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Our amazing P & C raised over $1800 at the Bunnings sausage sizzle on Saturday 21 July. Despite some cyclonic wind and rain, our volunteers were there in huge numbers to support with cooking and serving. We even had to send some volunteers home because we had such a good response from our community! Well done to everyone who helped or came along to buy a sausage. A big thank you to Amanda Wilmott and Ashleigh Walton for co-ordinating this event. It really was a team effort and a great advert for our wonderful school community!

Bunnings Sensory Garden Wednesday 15 August is a special day for us. We are very lucky to have staff from Bunnings Mandurah coming to school to construct a sensory garden. This garden will provide our students with a wider variety of play options and stimulate their senses too! Miss Del Fuoco and Mrs Starbuck have worked hard to arrange and co-ordinate this event and we thank them for this. We would like to acknowledge the community spirit shown by Bunnings - all materials and staff time is being donated to make this idea a reality. Thank you to those of you who have donated items for this project also.
Swimming in Term 4 The first two weeks of Term 4 will be when our Pre Primary students complete their in term swimming lessons at Mandurah Aquatic Centre. Full details will be provided later this term and we look forward to this being an enjoyable experience for the children.
Kindergarten Fridays Please be aware that in week 10 of this term (Friday 21 September), Kindy Groups 1 and 3 will be attending Kindy, NOT Groups 2 and 4. This is a catch up day to ensure the number of kindy days are equal for all groups across the year. This was detailed on the calendar at the start of the year. If you need a copy of the Kindy calendar, please pop in to the office and we will be glad to provide one.
New Housing You may be aware that there are some new houses being built in our local area. Peet have released 40 lots for sale on the land adjacent to Formby Rd and behind the Broadstone Vista shops. These houses are in the school’s local intake area and will boost our student numbers in the years ahead! If you want to know more about this development, you can contact Peet directly. We do have some information in our school office also.
Book Fair From 10—14 September, our school office will host a Scholastic Book Fair. This will be a great opportunity for our families to purchase quality books, whilst also supporting our Oakwood P & C with their fundraising efforts. The books will be on display throughout the week and details about when books can be purchased will be released shortly. We have our school open evening during that week on Wednesday 12 September from 6:00pm—7:30pm and the Book Fair will be open then also. If you are available to help with the book fair, a roster will be put up which you can add your name to. A big thank you to Tammy Atkinson, who co-ordinates our Scholastic book club and is organising this event, with the help of Rebecca Jolly.

Literacy and Numeracy Week
Between 20 and 24 August (Week 6), the
children will be commemorating Literacy
and Numeracy week. This will include a
variety of activities that utilise Literacy
and Numeracy skills and also provide
links to using these in real life. We will be
incorporating book week celebrations
into this week and will include dress up
days related to book characters on 22
and 23 August. The staff have some plans
for dress ups and we look forward to
seeing everyone enter into the spirit too!
