The Need for Improvement

!According to NSF’s Science & EngineeringIndicators -- 1996, 53% of a samplepopulation surveyed did not know thatEarth orbits the Sun once per year.

!21 out of 23 randomly selected students,faculty and alumni of Harvard Universitycould not correctly explain Earth’s seasons.

The Need for Improvement

!In August 1999, the Kansas State Board ofEducation voted 6 to 4 to remove theteaching of evolution from the statestandards.

!Scientists are needed to become advocatesof sound policies and standards in scienceeducation.

National Science Education Standards

! National Science EducationStandards give a consensus ofeducators and scientistsnationwide regarding whatstudents should know and be ableto do at different K-12 gradelevels in science.

! Standards also address bestteaching practices, professionaldevelopment of teachers, andimplementing systemic reform ofeducation.
