Composite Advantage, a leading manufacturer of large structural composite products, was able to meet the U.S. Navy’s RFP for a low-maintenance alternative to their metal deep-draft submarine camels.

SCIGRIP® 230 HV (High Viscosity) methacrylate adhesive was used by CA to assemble large, 5-module camels that could withstand the pressure and loads of berthing and mooring any U.S. Navy submarine type, anywhere in the world.

CA’s first camel was assembled on site at the Naval Submarine Base New London (Groton, CT). Since then, the Navy has installed five more camel sets, and CA is now manufacturing another two sets for the Naval Station Norfolk (Norfolk, VA). CA president Scott Reeve says, “The Navy is installing about two composite camels per year and is looking at other camel-like applications for the material.”

•Because the U.S. Navy camels have to withstand a lifting mass in excess of 45 metric tons and a submarine’s berthing velocity (which can be approximately 200 ft-kip of energy), SCIGRIP 230 HV was selected for its strength and flexibility.

•Permanent adhesion in harsh operating environments.

•A wide range of working times (from 30 to 120 minutes) gives workers the flexibility to assemble each of the 5 modules and, later, the entire camel structure.

•Minimal surface preparation.
