PEOPLE Applications at Record High The College of Science and Technology had 349 more freshman applications this year than last year. Specific increases were noted in the following programs: BA Biology (31%), BA Chemistry (31%), BS Computer Science (23%), BS Digital Forensics (21%), BS Electrical Engineering Technology (76%), BS Health Physics (30%), BS Nursing (13%), BS Physics (29%).

New Certificate in Game DesignA new 15 credit graduate Instructional Game Design certificate will provide students with specialized knowledge, skills, and experience designing and developing instructional game solutions. As students obtain jobs in the field of instructional technology, they are frequently asked to develop interactive learning games, add gamification to existing instructional content, and lend their expertise to make instruction more engaging in the classroom, in online learning modules and on mobile devices. This certificate is aimed to bridge the gap between the increasing demand of qualified instructional game designers and lack of formal educational programs. The certificate is for individuals that may already have some experience in the field of instructional technology but are looking for a specialized track of courses focusing on instructional game design and development. Once the certificate is complete, students will have the option of applying these courses to the Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology at BU.

Marken and Ricker’s research will be conducted at El Peru-Waka’ as part of the multi-institutional and multi-national Waka’ Archaeological Project (PAW), which has been investigating this capital of Classic Maya civilization since 2003 with on-going permission from the Guatemalan government’s Institution of History and Anthropology.

Marken and Ricker’s research is based on the idea that the Maya living in El Perú-Waka’ needed to “construct designed landscapes specifically to capture and distribute water.” This is due to the scarcity of potable rivers or lakes in that area, which are not adequate for the high settlement density within the urban core of El Peru-Waka’. Six thousand people living within less than a square kilometer would have needed a reliable means to meet their daily water needs.

Their research also suggests that the Classic Maya not only collected rainwater to drink but created “living ponds” where contaminants were filtered by plant and animal life. Urban inhabitants would have needed a means to clean and filter their most accessible sources of drinking water; ponds are one way managed supplies of drinking water could have been maintained across the city.

Marken and Ricker, accompanied by Bloomsburg students, will travel to El Perú-Waka’, located deep in the jungles of Petén, Guatemala. This will be Ricker’s third year conducting research at the site, and the 13th year for Marken, who is also a PAW co-director.

BU students present, compete in PACISE ConferenceEight Bloomsburg University students participated in the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Annual Conference at Kutztown University in April. They presented at the conference, and competed in a computer programming contest.

Seniors Ember Baker, Computer Science, and Irenes Sanchez, Information and Technology Management, were members of a discussion panel on “Enrolling Women Into Computing and Information Technology Majors”. They were joined by Loreen Powell, Associate Professor in Information and Technology Management at Bloomsburg, and faculty and students from four other PASSHE schools. The panel was moderated by Robert Montante, Associate Professor in Mathematical and Digital Sciences at Bloomsburg.

The conference also featured a four-hour programming contest. Computer Science majors Jake Daniel, Brian Fekete, Brett Logan, Lucas Liberacki, Tim Caulfield, and Rio Weber competed as two teams in a field of fourteen teams from PASSHE schools. Jake, Brian, and Brett took 2nd Place as team “Men In Computing.”

The Computer Science program’s ACM student chapter sends teams to as many as four programming contests each year, and have a history of placing well. With participation in conference presentations, student contests, and other activities, these young men and women represent student achievement at Bloomsburg University with spirit and style.

Diane Barrett was recognized for outstanding scholarly activity with the Provost’s Award for Excellence at an awards dinner in April. The award was established in 2006 to recognize and encourage continuing scholarly achievements of pretenured faculty. One award winner is named for each of the four colleges at Bloomsburg.

Barrett is an expert digital forensics professional who brings a unique depth and breadth of knowledge into the classroom from her vast professional experiences. Her hiring allowed Bloomsburg University to greatly strengthen an already impressive program into a national leader in Digital Forensics education. She single-handedly created the department’s Center of Excellence application to the National Security Agency (NSA) in the summer of 2015. This application resulted in our program being one of only seven in the nation that is recognized by the NSA and Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Excellence in Digital Forensics Education.

Barrett assumes a leadership role in all her endeavors. This includes conferences as well as multiple Digital Forensics working groups and Agency panels. She is an author with multiple books to her credit, and she had three articles accepted for publication in the past year. Her most recent conference paper won Honorable Mention in the best paper category. She has written grant applications that are only available to Centers for Academic Excellence, and is helping students obtain scholarships for college.

Over the last three years, Barrett has made seven conference presentations, written two book chapters and had two grants funded to go along with her Ph.D. completion and book publication. She is an expert in her field who has contributed significantly to the state of the art in doing cloud-based digital forensics security audits and examinations.
