West Indies Tri Series 2013The tri-series in the West Indies featured India, Sri Lanka as well as the host began on June 28. The tri-series comprised seven matches, with each team playing the other twice before a final.

Mahela Jayawardene becomes 8th batsman to cross 11,000-run mark in ODIs

Sri Lanka remains No 1 ranked T20I side after annual update

Mahela Jayawardene surpassed 11,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODI) when he reached 61 against Australia in the Group A encounter of ICC Champions Trophy 2013 at Oval.

He is the eighth player in the world and third Sri Lankan after Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara to cross the 11,000-run mark in the ODI format. Jacques Kallis and Sangakkara are the only other cricketers in the elite list apart from Jayawardene to be still playing.

A career-best 174 not out by Man of the Match Upul Tharanga and his record-breaking 213-run partnership with Mahela Jayawardene helped Sri Lanka beat India by 161 runs in the third match of the Celkon Mobile Tri-Nations Series Cup in Kingston on July 2.

Sri Lanka has retained its position as the number-one ranked Twenty20 International (T20I) side after the annual update of the Reliance ICC T20I Rankings Table was announced on Thursday.

14 out of the 16 countries with T20I status are ranked, with Afghanistan and Canada yet to play the required eight rated matches.

Afghanistan needs to play one more and Canada two more T20 Internationals prior to May 2014 in order to join the rankings.

Sri Lanka’s first Under17 cricket tour of England - A success

The A team played two four-day matches against West Indies A, in St Kitts and St Vincent, before embarking on the limited-overs leg, which fea-tured two Twenty20s in St Vincent and and three ODIs in Grenada.

The team was captained by Sri Lanka Test opener Dimuth Karunaratne, with middle order batsman An-gelo Perera serving as his deputy.

Sri Lanka A played two unofficial Test and 3 unofficial one day games against New Zealand A.

Final OD: The New Zealand A ended their tour of the sub-continent with a narrow series ODI loss to Sri Lanka ‘A’. The win gave Sri Lanka ‘A’ the three-match one-day series 2-1 after the tourists won the opener.Dimuth Karunaratne passed 50 for the fifth time in a row against the Kiwis on his way to a match-high 70 while 23-year-old skipper Dinesh Chandimal scored 48 and Ashan Priyanjan 47. All-rounder Ramith Rambukwella starred for the home side taking 4-30 from his 10 overs then scoring 36 from 29.

The first-ever Under 17 cricket tour of England by a Sri Lankan Schools Team ended on a successful note when the Lankan lads won the three-day game by an innings and 72 runs, the one-day games ( 2-1) and drew the two encounter with their English counterparts on their short tour of the United Kingdom from April 8-25.

Heartbreaking end for Sri Lanka Under-23 in Singapore

Tamil Union clinch third consecutive U-23 title

Sri Lanka Under-23 returned home heartbroken after an outstanding show in Singapore during the ACC Emerging Teams Cup where they came into the semi-finals with an unbeaten record and suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Pakistan under-23.The efforts of the two openers stood out for Sri Lanka during the series. Udara Jayasundara hit three fifties including 94 in the semi-final. Shehan Jayasuriya meanwhile scored a century and a half-century.

Tamil Union won the Under-23 inter-club cricket title for the third consecutive year by beating Moors Sports Club by massive 258 runs in the U23 Division One final encounter ended at the R Premadasa Sta-dium, on 01 September 2013.

India U19 in Sri LankaKusal Mendis of Prince of Wales College lead the Sri Lanka Under 19 squad in this two-week long series which were played between July 23rd – Aug 8th. The two ‘Youth Tests’ were drawn and the first Youth ODI was abandoned due to rain. India manage to take a 22-run victory in a closely fought match against Sri Lanka in the second Youth ODI in Kurunegala .

Women’s Limited Over Tournament Rain was the ultimate winner in the Women’s Limited-Overs Tournament final between Navy SC and Air Force which ended in a no result soon after the completion of the Air Force innings. The teams were declared joint champions. Air Force won the toss and elected to bat as the Navy SC bowlers restricted the Air Force below par score of 177 (49.3). Sri Lanka and Pakistan share trophy: ICC WWT20 Qualifiers

The heavy overnight rain fell which made the pitches at Merrion and YMCA unplayable in the morning and final matches were abandoned. The Pakistan v Sri Lanka match was abandoned and therefore the trophy was shared, Sri Lanka finish above Pakistan in the rankings due to net run rate as both teams had won an equal amount of matches throughout the tournament.

SLC Umpires get trained by Simon TaufelThe ICC’s umpires coach Simon Taufel was invited by Sri Lanka Cricket to conduct a series of programmes with a view to enhance the skills of local umpires.

Simon was in Sri Lanka from October 14 to 22 of October 2013.

SLC’s Cricket Actg. Head of Cricket Operations Carlton Bernadus said, “Simon Taufel will be in

Sri Lanka conducted a workshop which ran from October 15 to 21. All Level I and Level II umpires, including the Lankan ICC Elite

Panel which comprises Kumar Dharmasena, Ranmore Martinez, Ruchira Palliyaguru and

Ravindra Wimalasiri along with the emerg-ing panel of umpires are scheduled to attend this

workshop. At present there are 30 Level I and II um-pires in Sri Lanka.”

Bernadus further stated that Simon would speak on the subject of ‘What is it to be an Elite Umpire’. During his speech he was billed to touch on the subjects of nutrition, conditions and work pressure.Besides Taufel, the ICC’s regional coach Peter Manuel and the ICC Manager of Umpires Vince Vandberg also attended this workshop.Peter Manuel took the local umpires through the new playing conditions which were recommended by the ICC .Vince Vandberg conducted a separate workshop for local match referees so that the SLC could earmark them for future development.During the workshop Lankan elite umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who was adjudged the ICC’s Best Umpire delivered his speech on ‘My way to the top of the elite panel’.Also on the agenda was a Train the Trainer Programme and at the end of it the SLC’s Umpire Coach Educator T.H. Wijewardena and Carlton Bernadus worked with the 50 umpires who are not in the Level I and Level II categories. Not

Women’s Level 1 Cricket Coaching Course

The Coach Education Unit of SLC conducted a ‘Level 1 Coach Educator’ Course for selected Provincial & District Coaches from the 11th to 13th June at the ‘Max Academy’ located at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

The whole purpose of this exercise was to cater to the growing demand throughout the Country for many who would like to join the Cricket Coaching Industry by enhancing their knowledge & obtaining a qualification by following the SLC Level 1 Cricket Coaching Course which is endorsed by the ‘International Cricket Council’.

The SLC ’Coach Education Unit’ of the ‘National Coaching Department’ conducted an Level 1 Cricket Coaching Course for the current ‘Women’s Cricket ‘ development Squad players, Provincial Players & also a few ex National Players who are engaged in the Coaching fraternity in Sri Lanka. The course was conducted from the 11th to 14th June 2013 at the Max Cricket Academy, Kettarama.

The recent performances in the World Cup by our Women Cricketers has been noteworthy with their special performances against England & India where Sri Lanka ended up victorious. This Course was specially designed & conducted for Womens’s Cricket with the intention of developing our future players & Coaches to have an better understanding of the basic principles of playing & Coaching.

While currently the ‘Coach Education Unit’ of SLC only conducts such Courses at present it is the belief of the National Coaching Department that building a bench strength of Coach Educators for the future is of utmost importance.

SLC Level 2 Coaching Certificate Distribution

Three Day Coaching Programme with Les Lenham

The first ever SLC fully owned Level 2 Cricket Coaching certificate distribution was held at the SLC Headquarters recently. The accreditation Coaching Course was conducted in September 2012 & was held over a six day period, fifteen of the twenty Coaches who participated in the said course were successful in fulfilling all course requirements to be accredited as an SLC Level 2 Cricket Coach.

The Syllabus for this Course was constructed over a 10 month period by the Coaching Department & was developed by the National Coaching Staff & the Coach Education Unit of SLC. The SLC National Specialist Coaches& Coach Educators were utilized as presenters in the said Course. The National Captain at that time ‘Mahela Jayawardne’ also presented a topic on ‘Mental Toughness & leadership’ at this program.

The conducted Coaching Course attracted Ex National players such as ‘Avishka Gunawardne, Nuwan Zoysa & Ravindra Pushpakumara who are currently involved in the Coaching fraternity in Sri Lanka. The Coaching Department who currently has the ‘International Cricket Council’ endorsement for SLC’s Level 1 Coaching Course intends obtaining the ICC classification for its Level 2 Coaching Course in the future.

Sri Lanka Cricket successfully conducted its first of two three day Coaching Programs for selected Cricket Coaches in the Country at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

Les Lenham’ who comes from Sussex, England last visited Sri Lanka in late 1990;’s, while he is a renowned Cricket Coach in the UK for many years over the last few decades he is well known for his teaching skills in basic & advance techniques in the game of Cricket.

The first cement practice net, built at an approximate cost of Rs. 300,000, was declared open on Tuesday Nov. 5 in the presence of President and other senior officials of SLC, including Nishantha Ranatunga, its secretary, and Muttiah Muralitharan and the officials of the Foundation of Goodness at the Killinochchi Central College.

SLC through its National Development Committee, headed by SLC President Jayantha Dharmadasa, has started an infrastructure development plan for its stakeholders, such as Districts, Clubs, Associations, Provinces, and Schools. The development programme for schools was supported by legendary cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan.

Fund raising/ Charity events

Dinner Dance to raise funds for Schools’ cricket in Sri LankaCricket Ball 2013 organised by the Sri Lanka Cricket UK Committee was held at the Grange Hotel, St Paul’s London on Saturday the 15th of June to raise funds for schools’ cricket and also to honour the Sri Lanka Cricket team who are in the UK to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament.

The 420 guests were hosted to a glittering reception of exquisite canapés and drinks, with Sri Lanka C ricket’s newest sponsor Sri Lanka Tea Board displaying its wares with gift tea packs for the guests whilst enjoy-ing the Latin music played by the trio ‘Los Musicos’, followed by dinner in the elegant Shakespeare suite.

The Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews then introduced his team to those assembled, followed by the lighting of the traditional brass lamp by the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Dr Chris Nonis, The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, Mr Nishantha Ranatungu, Angelo Mathews and the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket UK Committee Asitha Jayaweera.

The funds raised from the event was utilised to improve school and district cricket in every corner of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Cricket UK Committee has already made a significant contribution to schools cricket this year by donating much needed cricket balls to 134 schools including cricket training aids for the National Coaching Department.

Prima Champions Cup Commenced for 7th Consecutive Year

Kandura Maroons become the UltraTech Super 4s Champions

The Prima Champions Cup inter-district and inter-provincial under 15 cricket tourna-ment conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket and sponsored by Prima Group will commence on September 2 2013. The press conference was held at the SLC headquarters on 23rd August 2013 with the participation of all senior officials from SLC and Prima Group.

The tournament commenced on the 2nd September 2013 and allowed the participation of 560 players from all around the country including the north & east. 28 team

competed against each other.

Kandurata Maroons beat Basnahira Greens by 7 wickets to win the final of the UltraTech Super 4’s Twenty20 tournament on 17th August at R Premadasa and ensured them a berth in the Champions League T20 which was played in India in September.

Nuwan Kulasekara’s early wickets formed the bedrock of the victory, as Basnahira failed to muster a counterat-tack, despite an unbeaten 53 from Angelo Mathews.

JAT Holdings, entered into a partner-ship with Sri Lanka Cricket as the Official Sponsor of Kandurata Ma-roons, the winner of SLC’s 2013 Super 4’s Tournament which qualified them for the Champions League T20 2013 which was held in India.
