Welcome to Scottish Opera’s 2014/15 Season – a wonderful celebration of an artform that is, by its very nature, full of drama.

I like to think that our annual Season Brochure, as well as doing the obvious job of imparting vital information about what we are performing and how you can get your tickets, acts as a window on the full range of the Company’s activities. These are hugely diverse and, as you leaf through this year’s brochure, I’d like to take this opportunity to outline for you the thinking behind the activity the Company undertakes each season. First and foremost, we aim to make fabulous productions that get to both the heart of the story and the hearts of our audience. Following last year’s reduced season due to the closure of the Theatre Royal, I am delighted to be able to bring you a subscription season of 5 mainstage operas, and a further 6 smaller-scale productions that will do just that. This season you can see operas from 11 composers across 5 centuries in 3 languages – testament indeed to our ‘balanced basket’ approach to programming devised to satisfy the varied tastes of our audience. We take our remit as Scotland’s national opera company very seriously. We serve an audience in a country which, due to its unique geography, has the lowest population density in the UK: 5.2 million people spread over 78,000 square kilometres (equivalent to almost a third of the total landmass of the UK). This is why touring has always, and unashamedly, been part of our make-up – and you can see how far we go to share the joy of live opera on the opposite page.

We actively seek out and nurture people with the talent to perform and create opera, to encourage and develop the opera ecology here in Scotland. And last but not least, we are committed to education and outreach that helps us sustain an audience for opera by encouraging newcomers of all ages to enjoy opera. I’m proud that this combination of activities makes Scottish Opera unique amongst European opera companies and I do hope you’ll find much to enjoy in this busy season.

Alex Reedijk, General Director

This new co-production comes from a creative team fast making its name as expert in Rossini’s comedies. With more than a nod towards the traditions of commedia dell’arte, their take on this much-loved story of the triumph of love over malice is highly theatrical. Mixing fairytale fantasy with heightened reality, the characters are at once fantastical and painfully real, the story dark and cruel but full of warmth and fun.

Forced to work as servant to her stepfather and stepsisters, Angelina, known to all as Cenerentola, dreams of the past, and of a better life. Kind and generous, she is all that her family is not. Hearing that Don Ramiro is holding a ball to choose a wife, her sisters gleefully prepare themselves for royal life. Then a mysterious veiled lady makes an unexpected appearance at the palace and their ambitions look set to be thwarted…

Bright, breathless and full of energy, Rossini’s music demands impressive vocal agility and the best in comedy characterisation. Russian mezzo-soprano Victoria Yarovaya, winner of the 2013 Mercedes Viñas Prize, is Angelina, and rising Rossini star Nico Darmanin is Ramiro. The wonderful ensemble cast also features baritone Richard Burkhard (The Magic Flute 2012), soprano Rebecca Bottone (The Pirates of Penzance 2013) and renowned bass Graeme Danby. William Lacey conducts.

Commissioned by Scottish Opera in 1996, James MacMillan’s extraordinary first opera has established itself as a modern masterpiece. Shocking, intense and utterly compelling, it is all the more macabre for being based in fact. This new production is directed by Olivia Fuchs (A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2013) and is conducted for the first time by the composer himself, bringing new musical insights to the fore.

InésdeCastro,SpanishmistresstoPedro,CrownPrinceofPortugal, findsherselfcaughtin fast-growing tension between their two countries. Goaded by his scheming advisor Pacheco, the King prepares to banish her for the good of the State, but Pacheco has more extreme measures in mind. As war erupts, Pedro leaves to lead his men and, left to fend for herself, Inés falls into a nightmare of political intrigue, where much more than her position is at stake.

An epic tale that encompasses everything from love, duty and betrayal to politics, torture and infanticide, MacMillan shies away from nothing. His music is rooted in the oldest of operatic traditions but looks at it all with fresh eyes in a unique, visceral experience that has all the grandeur of Verdi. Scottish Opera favourites Stephanie Corley and Paul Carey Jones are joined by Susannah Glanville (Tosca 2013) and British stars, tenor Peter Wedd and bass Brindley Sherratt.

Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, directs Gluck’s dramatic Orfeo. With an internationally acclaimed creative team including Mark Jonathan and Johan Engels, renowned for his vivid, theatrical designs, this production promises a visual spectacular that draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources including Dior’s ‘New Look’ and the exotic colours of tribal Africa.

Inaworldwheregodsseefittomeddleinthelivesofmen,Orfeo, distraughtbythedeathof his lover, resolves to defy their will and rescue her from Hades. But the gods have their rules; Euridice may be allowed to escape, but only if Orfeo can stop himself from looking at her until they are once again safe above ground. It seems a simple task, but will Euridice understand his sudden coldness?

Focusingondramaticeffectoverthevocaldisplaysofavouredbyhiscontemporaries,Gluck’s music gives a unique glimpse forward into the Romantic era. At one moment full of fury, the next clear and pure, his music is full of emotion. The cast is joined by a chorus of 20 and an ensemble of dancers to bring Gluck’s exceptional choreographic writing to life. Australian mezzo-soprano Caitlin Hulcup (Così fan tutte 2009) is Orfeo. Kenneth Montgomery, Conductor Laureate at Santa Fe Opera in 2013, conducts.

The creative team behind 2012’s sell-out La traviata returns to bring Jenůfa to life, promising a beautifully observed production that makes full use of their extensive narrative gifts. Opera at its grandest, Verdi’s Il trovatore hasn’t been seen on the Scottish Opera stage since 2001. Dark and menacing, Peter Watson’s production gives this monumental story the space it deserves. The stark, brooding lines of Tim Hatley’s imposing set stand in impressive contrast to the blood and thunder of Verdi’s score, and provide a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50.

A gypsy woman is discovered in the castle of the Count di Luna, crouched over the cradle of his youngest son. When the boy falls ill, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter, crazed with grief, snatches the child intending to kill him, but in her madness, throwsherownsonontothefire.Yearslater, shehasbroughttheCount’ssonupasher own and he and his elder brother, unaware of their relationship, are rivals for the beautiful Leonora. Jealousy, revenge, love and hate collide as the opera crashes towards its inexorable conclusion.

Verdi’s score is packed with a dizzying succession of full-blooded melodies, from the thrilling Anvil Chorus and Manrico’s stirring ‘Di quella pira’ to the spine-tingling Miserere. Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly returns for three performances during the Commonwealth Games. Brought to life through a cast of very human characters, his hugely atmospheric production lays bare a poignant story that still has the power to affect over a century after it was first performed.

In August 2012, we embarked on an ambitious project to transform the Theatre Royal’s public spaces to create a better experience for audience members. Less than 2 years later, we’re nearly finished and the new building will soon be open.

The spacious new foyers benefit from greatly improved facilities including better bars, more toilets, a daytime café and new lifts. And by popular demand, there’s a new heating and ventilation system to help keep the auditorium at a more comfortable temperature.

We can’t wait to share the new-look theatre with you.

A changing exhibition in the Hope Street foyers and touchscreens on each floor will give access to photographs, audio and film clips that combine to celebrate the Theatre Royal’s rich history as part of Glasgow’s cultural landscape. To find out more, go to scottishopera.org.uk/publiccampaign

This brooding, atmospheric Macbeth returns in celebration of the 2014 Year of Homecoming. Inspired by events in the war-torn Balkans, Dominic Hill’s production is at once contemporary and ageless; a world of camouflage-clad leaders and grungy, chain-smoking witches, where power is all but it comes at a price.

Macbeth has heard a prophecy, given to him by three hags, that he will become King. His wife, spurred by ambition, persuades him to seize his opportunity and kill Duncan, who currently sits on the throne. Murder follows murder, and soon Macbeth has the blood of two men on his hands. Haunted by apparitions, visions and guilt, he returns to the witches for guidance, but their words give him little comfort in his future.

Unsettling and full of tension, the drama of Shakespeare’s play is underlined by the brilliance of Verdi’s score. Desperate and furious, at times ethereal and visionary, his music gets to the heart of this powerful story, intensifying the tragedy as Macbeth’s destiny unfolds. Touring 15 of Scotland’s smaller venues in Autumn 2014, this piano-accompanied production features former Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Shuna Scott Sendalland Marie Claire Breen. David Stephenson reprises his Spring 2014 performancein the title role.

Helping us take opera far and wide

In 2014/15, gifts from our Alexander Gibson Circle Patrons are helping us stage a new co-production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola. It’s their help that has brought so many new productions like this to the stage in recent years.

The Friends of Scottish Opera are supporting our annual Opera Highlights tour for the 9th year in a row. Each of the 1600 members make this tour possible – taking the highest-quality live opera to people who might otherwise have to travel miles to see it.

Thank you. You’re really making a difference to opera in Scotland.

Join Farmer MacNeep, his poor lost sheep and a whole host of exciting farmyard friends this winter in a brrrr-illiant new show for 3 to 5 year olds. Created by Scottish Opera Composer in Residence Gareth Williams and writer Ross Stenhouse (Artistic Director, Hopscotch Theatre Company), Mister MacNeep has lost his Sheep! is a fun-filled interactive adventure brought to life by puppets and live music, and featuring the cleverest sheep in Scotland.

Poor Farmer MacNeep. It’s the snowiest, sleetiest, windiest winter ever and two of his favourite sheep are missing. Where on earth can they be? Maybe they’re trapped in the snow – oh no! But these aren’t any ordinary, silly old sheep. This clever pair have built themselves a lovely, cosy cave in the snow and are quite happy to wait out the wild winter weather with plenty of grass to munch, snug in their warm, woolly jumpers.

Adam and Eve are banished from the Garden of Eden and ready themselves to leave paradise, contemplating what they’ve lost and preparing to make their way into an unknown world. Recitals

These imaginative recitals celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Waverley Novels. Curated by Head of Music Derek Clark, the programme is inspired by some of Scott’s most popular works.

Rich with romanticism and full of the supernatural, Scott’s novels and poetry have been a well-mined source for generations of composers, and have inspired over 80 operas. These intimate recitals feature work by Donizetti, Rossini and Bizet as well as Arthur Sullivan, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame, and Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn.

Visiting four of Scotland’s most singular and beautiful venues, including The Hub in Edinburgh, St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen and Òran Mór in Glasgow, a stellar line-up brings the programme to life, accompanied by Derek Clark on piano. The tour also includes a recital at Scott’s own home, Abbotsford House, on Monday 7 July – the anniversary of the publication of Waverley,thefirstoftheauthor’sworld-famousseries.

Scottish Opera has a long history of nurturing talent; from performance to the creation of new work,we’ve always seen our duty to the future of opera in Scotland as an integral part of our activity. This season we have a whole range of activity based around up-and-coming talent – from new student writers and composers to new voices to look out for, including our own Emerging Artists.

Developing new talent

Encouraging New OperaIn collaboration with the University of AberdeenPart of Sound Festival 2014

Supported by The Leverhulme Trust

For the last 12 months, we’ve been working with undergraduate writers and composers at the University of Aberdeen to encourage the next generation of opera makers. Working with two experienced mentors – composer Gareth Williams and director and dramaturg Matthew Richardson – the students have created two short operas that will premiere at 2014’s Sound Festival in Aberdeen.

Opera ScenesIn collaboration with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

Featuring students studying at Glasgow’s Alexander Gibson Opera School, these simply staged opera scenes are the place to spot Scotland’s up-and-coming opera talent. A fundamental part of the students’ development, taking part gives them the opportunity to explore both their present capability and their potential as artists. Accompanied by The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, the performances give students the invaluable experience of performing with a live orchestra on the stage of a large theatre.

Our Emerging Artists programme gives young artists the opportunity of a lifetime – a period of full-time work with the Company to help them launch their careers. Initially set up in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to nurture outstanding young singers, the programme now also includes positions for a director, a repetiteur and a costume trainee.

You can hear our Emerging Artist singers performing in several of our operas this season – their roles are listed on each individual opera page. Our Emerging Artist director, Lissa Lorenzo, is co-directing Anamchara – Songs of Friendship in July, before assisting on La Cenerentola this Autumn.

Helping us spread the magic of opera

We want opera to be open to as many people as possible, from a toddler at their first live show or an adult performing for the first time in their own community, to people who for many reasons can’t get to the theatre any more. Our education and outreach teams are out and about every day, igniting interest, inspiring confidence and encouraging participation.

We can’t do this without the invaluable support of many trusts and foundations, as well as our Education Angels – a dedicated group of people whose regular gifts are helping us spread the magic of opera, and introducing it to its future audiences.

The future is in our hands.

‘To have a major opera company such as Scottish Opera show that they have faith in you is a huge endorsement for any young singer’Sarah Power,Emerging Artist 2013/14

Future audiences need something to watch… Our Emerging Artist programme is encouraging the next generation of singers, composers, directors and repetiteurs. We’ve also now expanded it to develop the specialist artisan skills needed to create costumes, and plans continue to grow. The support of our Emerging Artist Benefactors is vital, and helps us continue to transform young artists’ lives in Scotland.

A Little Bit of…A Little Bit of… takes opera out of the theatre, with the shows we perform in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen cleverly re-written into lively 20-minute versions. Based on a form of Japanese storytelling, the stories unfold to a series of colourful illustrations, brought to life by a storyteller, singer and two instrumentalists. Look out for performances of A Little Bit of La Cenerentola and A Little Bit of Il trovatore in bookshops, cafés and community venues near you.

This year, we’re also touring a new pop-up show for children and family audiences. Puffy MacPuffer and the Crabbit Canals tells the story of the 5 waterways that link Scotland from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Like most families, each one has its own unique characteristics: Caledonian – the longest, Crinan – the most beautiful, hard-working Monklands, Union – the fastest, and wise old Forth & Clyde…and each one thinks they’re the best.
