growth of roughly 35% over the past 10 years,which put pressure on the existing drinking watersupply. In 2006, the Scottsdale Water Campusconsulted a local firm to assess and expand theexisting 53 MGD facility to a 75 MGD facility. Theexisting facility consists of a conventionalsedimentation and granular media filtrationsystem. Rather than expand the existingprocesses, the city wanted to explore a more> COMPLETION DATE: 2009 processes, the city wanted to explore a moreadvanced treatment line to include high-rateclarification and membrane filtration.

In 2006, the Water Campus undertook anextensive pilot study, which included theevaluation of high-rate DAF, high-rate sand-ballasted clarification for pretreatment and severalmembrane filtration technologies.

SOLUTIONg

The high-rate AquaDAF® system was selected as the best solution based on overall performance,footprint, and operational costs for pretreatment to membrane filtration. The DAF process was the clearchoice with regard to effective removal of turbidity, algae and TOC prior to membranes. And unlike thesand-ballasted system the DAF will operate without the need for a flocculant polymer and ballastmaterial, which is undesirable as it is potentially detrimental to the fouling potential and longevity of themembrane fibers. Additional favorable factors in the selection of DAF were low waste flow, thickenedsolids of 2 4% ease of use and low maintenance requirements
