Growing up in the Midwest, the saying went, April showers bring May flowers. It’s not quite the same here in Arizona,
but the desert is in full bloom, all signs of growth and rebirth. May also is a reminder of the important women in our lives, those who brought us into the world and those who with whom we continue to grow. For me, those women are my mom, Rose, and my lovely bride and business partner, Kat.
Anyone who has met my siblings, especially my three brothers and me, would have to say my mom is a saint. With only seven years between the five of us, Mama Rose had her hands full. She played referee, nurse and nun. She kissed booboos, wiped away tears, gave us sage advice and prayed... a lot. I am sure we were largely responsible for her prematurely gray hair.
I was blessed to be in business with my Mom and Dad. Dad gave us our entrepreneurial business sense, but mom gave me my heart. At 87, she continues to give her time to a local food bank, though, she just recently gave her seat up on the board. And she has never met a stranger, a trait she shares with Kat. Her quick smile and warm personality light up every room she enters.
Today, I am blessed to be working every day with my best friend. She is an amazing mother to two grown boys, who are off crafting their own futures. Like so many moms, she hates the physical distance between them but relishes the precious times when we all get to be together. I know she will be missing them on Mother's Day.
This issue celebrates several amazing Scottsdale women, one whose passion is raising money to educate children across the country, one amazing connector, another who keeps us fit, and someone who is emigrated to this country and is creating her own American dream.
Those of us who are children and those of us who are husbands should thank the incredible women in our lives, never forgetting to tell them how much they mean to us and how much we love and respect them. So, mom, I love you very much. I can almost hear her respond “Me too, you.”
Blessings,Mike McMahonPublisher

Livia Margulies grew up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, where movement is a way of life. She walked to the beach, hiked the
coast and played in the ocean almost every day. She walked to school, roller-skated for fun and started exercising at the gym when she was 12. People in Rio wear moisture-wicking clothes built for an active, tropical lifestyle. High-quality spandex is a must, yoga pants are the standard and clothes built to last are the norm.
“My love of leggings began there,” Margulies says. “When I moved here I couldn’t find a good pair. I bought the expensive ones and the color faded and the material quickly wore out. So, when friends went to Brazil, I had them bring them to me.”
Today, Margulies calls North Scottsdale home, but still lives an active lifestyle. She’s a busy mom of two 5-year-old twins and a 3-year-old daughter. She also runs a company she started nearly two years ago, Liv Rio Sportswear. All of this and she manages to make time for the gym every day.
This super mom joined forces with her cousin, who’s a talented designer. They talked fabrics, style and manufacturing and created the perfect legging for active women. Her pieces hold up great in the desert and tropics because the fabric is breathable and designed for high heat. They’re also designed for women of all shapes and sizes.
“My persona for my brand is me. A mom who doesn’t have time to go to the gym and change afterwards. Our pants are all-day pants. You can go to the gym, sweat, pick up your child and attend activi-ties afterwards,” Margulies says.
When she’s not in the gym, chasing kids or running her company, she enjoys mentoring female entrepreneurs and encourages stores to buy locally.
“Designers struggle, but there is talent here and the talent doesn’t need to leave Arizona," Margulies says. "We can all grow together. I have a good brand and have good people to help me."
Margulies understands what women need and does what she can to give them what they want.
“We need to be strong," she says. "When our kids don’t sleep, it’s nice to wear clothes that are comfortable. You’re going to feel good, be sexy and power through the day."

Sportswear can also be purchased at Heidi Boutique, Carmen Boutique,

Arizona’s foster care system is
overwhelmed. Presently it finds itself with over 17,000
kids in the system, but less than 700 listed foster homes available.
While the majority of those children may be in the system for a short time as the
legal process plays itself out, 2,300 children wait patiently, hoping to find their forever families.Founded in 1912, Arizona’s Children Association
is one of the oldest and largest comprehensive child welfare and behavioral health agencies in Arizona.
With over a dozen programs with focuses ranging from foster care and adoption to behavioral health and trauma
response, family preservation and reunification, kinship services, parenting education and transitional support, they
can assist more than 40,000 children and families each year.

ARIZONA’S CHILDREN
ASSOCIATION OFFERS HOPE AND
SUPPORT FOR FOSTER
CHILDREN
ARTICLE KORY KILMER
16 North Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2017
The numbers speak for themselves. Through these programs, AzCA has seen nearly 100 percent of caregivers reporting increased effec-tiveness in helping their children learn, while about the same percentage of youth reported gaining skills for self-advocacy and feeling prepared for independence.
Last year alone, AzCA helped to train and support over 800 licensed foster families while assisting in more than 84 adoptions.
For those looking to help, Arizona’s Children Association is happy to be considered for any monetary gift and is proud that 92 cents of every cash dollar donated are spent directly on programs and services. A donation to AzCA may also qualify for the Arizona Qualifying Charitable Organization tax credit, which can reduce the amount you owe, dollar for dollar.
There are also many ways to volunteer with AzCA, including mentorship roles, group volunteers and short-term volunteers that assist with specific projects or upcoming events. And for those looking to make the difference of a lifetime, they might want to consider opening up their home to kids in need.
“I wrote in my journal when I was 12 years old that I wanted to have foster kids,” Nicole, a former foster parent with AzCA, says. “My husband and I have known each other since the seventh grade, and he always said he wanted to adopt, so this has just always been a part of both of our hearts.”
Nicole and her husband decided to become foster parents through AzCA in 2014. Already having three biological children, the couple agreed if they wanted any more kids, they
would look into fostering kids. They reached out to AzCA, and after going through the qualifying and licensing process, they welcomed their first child about four months
later. Since then, they have fostered a total of 12 kids, of which they adopted six.“If you would have asked me three years ago that we would have nine children three years later, I would have laughed and called you crazy,” Nicole admits.
Though Nicole and her husband’s story as foster parents might be unique, their desire to get involved within their community and play a
vital role for kids who need some help is not.“The hardest part is just starting the process,” Nicole says. “I would tell anyone that if there is even the slightest interest in your
heart to do this then go ahead and do it. I don’t know any other way to say other than to say this is the hardest blessing that
I have ever walked through, but I would not trade in any of the tears, the heartache, the struggle for anything.
Being a part of this stretches your soul wide open, and I would do it all again a million times over.”

ation, including a full description of their offered
services and ways to get involved, please visit

K IM BANKOF IER
COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER, VI AT SILVERSTONE
WOMEN OF NORTH SCOTTSDALE
Bankofier has been married for 24 years to her husband, Todd, and the pair has three children.
GET TO KNOW KIM BANKOFIER:
WHAT MAKES YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY?
I am passionate about our community because I was incredibly blessed to grow up here. When you really love something you need to take care of it.WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?
“You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give,” -Winston Churchill.WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE WOMAN FROM EITHER CURRENT TIMES
OR HISTORY?
Other than my amazing mom, who has always been a great exam-ple of giving, love and sacrifice to all six of her children, I would have to say Lucille Ball. Anyone that knows me knows that it’s funny movies and comedy that bring me light in a sometimes too serious world. -MTE
A nearly lifelong Scottsdale resident, Kim Bankofier has been involved in the local community in a variety of capacities.
“I have a lot of experience in a multitude of activities—from school years at Kiva Elementary, Xavier Prep and U of A to my work involvement at Scottsdale Citizen Magazine, Westworld, Russ Lyon Realty, and currently Vi at Silverstone,” she says. “These opportunities have allowed me to be actively involved in meaningful aspects of this community. I also had the great opportunities of being involved as a board member at my church, St. Patrick Catholic Community, and Notre Dame Preparatory High School.”
“My greatest contribution to the community would be using my God-given gifts of networking in ways to help as many people as possible: business to business, nonprofits, mentoring and more,” she adds. “From my position as current Director of Women of Scottsdale to my role as Co-Chair of the Host Committee for the Charles Schwab Cup golf tournament, I truly enjoy connecting all the different resources that make these projects more productive and successful. In my current position at Vi at Silverstone, helping people understand the benefits of a Lifecare community or navigating senior living is another way I can be of help.”

LET I T IA FRYESPEAKER, “AUCTIONTAINER” AND AUTHOR
Alice Cooper nicknamed Letitia Frye an “auctiontainer” after watching her rehearse for a charity event—and the label fit like a glove.
“What that title [auctiontainer] equates to is a former model and actress turned professional auctioneer, combining the skills of all those careers into one performance,” Frye explains. “… I only do charity auctions, and I volunteer with and witness first hand every organization I raise funds for. I have been to Haiti to feed orphans, in trial research in cancer labs, volunteer at gay youth camps, rescue horses on the border, grant wishes to sick children, spend days alongside a singer performing in hospital rooms...the list goes on and on.”
Frye estimates that she has helped raise more than $300 million for charity.
“For me, it is the time I spend with those in need that gives me the greatest reward, but knowing I have a career making a positive financial impact on the community as well is nothing short of a blessing either,” she says.
GET TO KNOW LETITIA FRYE:
ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG WOMEN ASPIRING TO START A
SUCCESSFUL CAREER?
Get a mentor, either in the field you wish to pursue or a woman you wish to aspire to be like. Secondly, we all have fear. It can paralyze you or mobilize you in your career; that is your choice. Use your fear and go with it. Thirdly, believe in yourself. Do not wait for someone else to tell you or justify how talented, smart or useful you are.FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?
“It always seems impossible, until it is done.” -Nelson Mandela.WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE WOMAN FROM EITHER CURRENT
TIMES OR HISTORY?
Hands down Mother Theresa. I don't think there has ever lived a more selfless woman with more courage, grit and grace. -MTE

MEL ISSA F INKOWNER, GIRLY GIRLZ IN SCOTTSDALE
After many years spent working in the corporate world, Melissa Fink was ready for a change. The business woman and busy mom of two boys wanted to do something where she could have an impact on others, so she set her sights on her hometown of Scottsdale; and came across Girly Girlz, which was currently for sale.
Now approaching her one-year anniversary as owner of the store, Fink has a lot to celebrate. And there is truly no better place to celebrate than Girly Girlz, as the store offers a bevy of entertainment options, from all inclusive birthday parties to private tea parties, day camps and more.
However, the road to successful business ownership wasn’t always easy. In 2004, Fink lost her sister in a drunk driving accident. The news was devastating, but Fink persevered and made it her mission to instill some of her sister’s vibrant spirit into Girly Girlz.
Then in 2009, only a few days after having her first child, Fink suffered a stroke and had to learn how to walk again. It was a trying time emotionally, mentally and physically, yet she was still deter-mined to make it through.
“I have always believed that if you have hope, and you work really hard and keep a good attitude, things will get better,” says Fink.
And they did. With Girly Girlz running at full capacity, Fink finds joy in having the opportunity to brighten the lives of other children, as well as teach her own children the value of hard work.
“It is important for me to have my sons see a strong woman, and a woman owning her own business,” says Fink. “To know what it’s like to have a good work ethic and take ownership of something.”
GET TO KNOW MELISSA FINK:
WHO HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE
SO FAR?

Kim LaJoye-Redus, owner of Anytime Fitness, started her career selling
prosthesis to people who needed total joint replacements. For 15 years, she found it to be very rewarding, but something was missing. So she went back to school and got her mas-ter's in kinesiology. Her motivation was to own her own business where she could help and connect with people on a deeper level.
In 2011, she opened her first Anytime Fitness facility and her dream of making a difference in people’s lives became a reality. Last July, she opened her second location in the Grayhawk community at Pinnacle Peak and Miller Road
“Our gym is like Cheers, where every-body knows your name. It’s a neighbor-hood gym that is clean, convenient and friendly, which is inviting for those who don’t normally want to be in a big box gym and who are not trying to impress anyone,” LaJoye-Redus explains.
A former marathon and competitive fitness athlete, LaJoye-Redus has had both her hips replaced so she can identify with many of her clients who have had injuries or surgeries. She understands the body’s limitations and teaches people how to work around their limitations to help them gain more mobility, strengthen their muscles and build stamina. She customizes every workout to meet their fitness goals keeping in mind any physical restrictions.
IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE
There are three components to one’s over-all fitness—diet, weight training and cardio. Amazingly, your diet contributes 80 percent of the results and the workout 20 percent toward your fitness goal. So, trying to work

DAILY EXERCISES YOU CAN
DO THROUgHOUT THE DAY
1. Wall squats—Stand up against a wall and lower your body like you're sitting in a chair keeping hands alongside your body. Hold for one minute then stand up again. This exercise works the whole body, especially the legs and core.
2. Throughout the day, watch your posture making sure your chin is tucked in, your shoulders are back and your chest is out.
3. Sit with back against the chair, not slouching forward.
4. Whenever possible, take the stairs.
5. Walk around the building during a break or stay indoors and walk up and down the halls. Start making it a habit of walking more by parking your car farther from the office or store.

ARTICLE ALISON STANTON
In the three months that Spence Diamonds has been open in the Scottsdale Quarter, the diamond jewelry
retailer has already earned a well-deserved reputation for its beautiful selection of engagement rings.
While the stereotypical image of the nervous-yet-ex-cited guy who is shopping for an engagement ring for his girlfriend still takes place at Spence Diamonds, Jason Wong says couples are now the more common customer group.
“In this day and age marriages are more of a group deci-sion, and the customer mix now reflects this,” says Wong, Digital and Marketing Manager at Spence Diamonds.
“Nowadays with both the man and the woman working and contributing equally to a large majority of households this type of trend is not really a surprise for us. We find that couples come in to search for designs, learn more about the product and decide what is best for them as a group.”
Once the couple decides together on the perfect ring, Wong says the man often returns later to buy it.
“Of course you still do get the single man coming into the store looking to surprise his soon to be fiancée, but that group is no longer as dominant as it once was.”
No matter who walks in the door looking for a gorgeous and sparkling engagement ring, Wong says Spence Diamonds offers a wide selection for a variety of tastes and styles.
When thinking about current and popular trends in engagement rings, Wong says customers are moving away from the traditional solitaire styles and are gravi-tating towards multi-diamond and halo designs.
“People are looking for more unique looks and want to stand out from the pack,” he says, adding that while
Spence’s focus has always been on diamonds, within that specialty, they are now seeing some changes to less traditional options.
For example, more couples are looking for a vintage style engagement ring and the use of different materials including rose gold.
“We have also seen more requests for colored yellow/pink and blue diamonds, and with our Artisan Created Diamonds customers can get these colors without breaking the bank,” he says.
As Wong explains, Spence is one of the first dia-mond retailers in the world to offer Artisan Created Diamonds, or lab grown diamonds, which are made in the United States and are more ecologically sustainable than traditionally mined diamonds.
In addition to offering a wide selection of socially responsible and beautiful diamonds, Wong says Spence Diamonds prides itself on providing each shopper with a positive and fun experience.
“Our sales process is very much all about the shopper. We educate each and every customer on the 4 C’s (carat, clarity, color and cut), and let them decide on the ring and diamond that they want.”
The store features completely open showcases so that customers can try on rings at their leisure, Wong says.
“Spence offers the most unique, fun and engaging in-store experience out there and we believe that this allows for customers to find the right ring to help them celebrate their big day in a way that suits the occasion.”
