Hi Everybody.
As some of you know, I've been fundraising and training for
the last while in preparation for my rather foolhardy
endeavor of cycling Lands End to John O'Groats. Fund
raising so far has come to a rather staggering total of £2000
split roughly evenly between the two charities! The first day
of cycling will be on the 22nd May, but we are leaving to
travel down on the 20th. There is still time to donate if you
want, there are forms available in the Anchorage or the
Shop. Or you can go directly to www.justgiving.com and
type my name. Both charities will appear with the above
photo attached.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO THOSE THAT HAVE DONE
SO FAR!

Scourie and District
Community Council
Scottish and Southern Electricity have what they call a
Resiliant Communities Fund. This allows for
grants to be awarded to help communities to overcome the
worst effects of adverse conditions. For
example many of the houses in Scourie rely on electricity for
all their heating and cooking requirements
and extended power cuts would cause serious problems. The
Community Council is considering applying
for one of these grants worth up to £20,000 and would like
anyone with ideas of what is required to pass
these on to Alistair Mackay or any member of the CC.
Prolonged loss of electricity and failure of both
landline and mobile phone links are two of the anticipated
problems but there are probably more. Possible
solutions to those are some sort of emergency power supply
for the hall and a satellite phone for
communications, again there are probably more. The hall is
the only community building in Scourie that
would qualify for a grant. Emergency power supply systems
are expensive so we could not afford anything
too elaborate. The CC look forward hopefully to any
suggestions as to what is required.

THE SUPERFAST BROADBAND
EXPERIENCE
– HOW WAS IT FOR YOU? Many weeks have now passed since some (if not all) of our
Scourie residents were finally connected to Superfast
Broadband. Scourie & District Community Council would
like to ask you about your experience of the whole process,
so that we can get a realistic picture of how things have
gone. If you wish to let us know about any particular aspect
(good or bad) of your own Superfast Broadband experience,
please post your comments on either the Scourie Facebook
page (at
https://www.facebook.com/groups/350287528654505/) or
the contact facility on the Scourie webpage (at
www.scourie.co.uk). If you were able to also include the
results of a recent Broadband speed test (use
http://www.which.co.uk/reviews/broadband-
deals/article/broadband-speed-test) that would be
helpful. Many thanks.

Scourie Weather
April lived up to its reputation of showers, with
plenty of rain. On two consecutive days in the
middle of the month we had 19 mm, and it stayed
damp to the end, with a final cold snap of
“lambing snow” on 24th and 25th. Down south we
would call this a “blackthorn winter”, always
turning cold when the blackthorn flowered.
I have recently applied to the Maldie Burn fund for
a weather station, which will be linked to the
internet, and give regular weather readings for
Scourie. Anyone will be able to access these
records through an app, online, or through the
Scourie website. I will be able to record rainfall,
temperature (min and max), humidity, wind speed
and direction, and sunshine and UV readings.
Because the readings will be automatically
uploaded to the internet, this will be a “live”
reporting system, and will tie in with figures from
Achfary, KLB, Durness and Ullapool.
Hopefully this will arrive and be set up ready for
next month when I’ll give more details.
