g Q P T B A L l , I K A r . I l f B R A I M W r . T O A C L O S E ___________ __________The Lyndhurst Municipal Softball League is slow ly draw ing
to a close even though the season officially ended on Ju ly 28. Rain and inclement weather along with several, other factors have combined to draw the season on long past the closing date. The standings have just about been decided as far as the w in ners are concerned, there is still faint hope for the G allagh er Association to pull within range o f the leading Colum bus C lub but they have to win all their games to do it and among them are two games with the league leaders. These same G allaghers took part in three games last w eek and won one, defeating the vastly improved Polish-Am erican C lub in a squeaker on M onday by the score of 5 to 4. Then they playe,d.a tie w ith the Bed- n ck Sport Shop team and wound up the week playing the cham pion Columbus Club to a 4-4 draw on Friday in a game that had to bc called on account of darkness.
There was but one tie game during the early part of the season but several others have cropped up during the past three weeks. The league has played before an estimated attendance of over 20.00G persons for the season and over 350 p layers have taken part in the expanded program that is conducted under the spon sorship of the Department o f P arks and Public Property, headed by Commissioner Jam es A . Breslin . W alter Molloy, R a y M athews, Sam Donald and B ill Dacosta, have guided affairs of the league over thc past several seasons.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, undefeated in regu lar play have sewn up the Western Division in convincing style and an exhibition game is being arranged between them and the Colum bus C lub as soon as the latter m athem atically clinches the title.
Championship awards and individual trophies w ill be presented at a final meeting of the league to be held early in Septem ber according to information given out by W alter Molloy.
In thc meantime, batting averages are being compiled as the gam es progress.

They say that, since the State Board i* to be the o fficial head of the Department of Education, it should have a voice in selecting the Comm issioner as a m atter o f good administration. A t the same time they point out the possibility o f politics in thc schools if each new governor appoints a new commissioner whose term w ill end w ith his own. Mr. Bianding's Untold StoryA Lyndhurst building firm suddenly is missing. The
police rap at the doors with summonses. Heartbroken house seekers run to the prosecutor's office with complaints. Approximately 20 houses which the firm promised to build remain incomplete, after many months.
In North Arlington 14 houses, all incomplete fall to pieces under the attack of the elements. Many thousands of dollars lay wasting in valuable materials, most of them in short supply. A street above this desolate scene a dozen families stare out at a mudhole which was to have been a tree-lined paved street, complete with curbs and sidewalks. The builder went broke to the tune of $50,(MM) or so, and the bankruptcy courts toy with a solution.
These are not isolated instances of u crazy-quilt construction game.
AH over the country—in fact, there are other local instances of houses which have been rising with the approximate speed of a century plant—the scenes are repeated. Folks who put their life savings into their dream homes are living out nightmares. Their money is gone, they have no homes. What is worse, their prospects of getting a home are even worse than before, since now their savings are gone.
What is the answer? In the case of the Lyndhurst building firm, the op
erator turns out to be a man with a long criminal record —a record studded with cases such as now are being developed. People who trustingly put their money into his Kyiwla didn't investigate properly. As for the North Arlington situation, all the facts have not been developed. The builder himself did his best and lost his own fortune. Nevertheless, this does not make, the situation of those who bought houses in the expectation they would get all ihe modern conveniences that go with them any easier.
Of course, a unique situation existed after the war. Few building companies ready to embark upon house building programs were in existence. There was a market for anything with a roof and persons who had no reason to be in housing construction got iflto it as quitfjy as possible. Not all failed. But the complaints which have rev-

In general, said A llan , the Jum p in the Registry Division ch argesr amounts an over-all 20 per cent.
Last year the Registry Division collected $167,839.10 in fees. The boost in charges should bring it over the $200,000 m ark said Allan.. The fees enum erated range from 15 cents for a receipt fo r a m ortgage, to the $6 charged for filing a map. plan, or chart.

crberated all over the country, from persons who maintain that they got nothing for their money and others who complained what they did get was worse than nothing, -how that the most important function in the country— home production—is in a terrible state.
We think there is a ready solution. There should be established, nationwide, a Home Pro
tectors’ Guild, comprising public officials, builders ahd real estate operators, with units in every community. I t would be the function of this guild to investigate every builder who seeks a construction permit, as to reliability and responsibility.
Without the approval of this guild, no builder could obtain a construction permit. Such approval would he a fair notice that the builder was worthy of a client's trust.
What We are suggesting, of course, is creation of a sort of construction Good Housekeeping award. Sonrothinp of that nature, i&^badly needed today.
Mr. Blanding is quite a funny fellow—in the movies. When its your bank account into which the hand of unconscionable and inept contractors are dipping, the laugh*
