Happy New Year to you all.
The club has had a successful 12 months in various regattas, both locally and overseas
and ‘Head’ races.
We also added two more boats to our fleet – a double/pair and a very nice refurbished
eight.
The first hurdle to extend our shed (the removal of trees) has been approved. The next
step is to complete reams of paperwork for building approval, etc.
A warm welcome to new members who have joined our club during the past twelve
months. I hope you enjoy rowing on our beautiful river, and if you have any concerns or
questions please discuss it with a committee member.
2016 will be an exciting year for our club. We have the State and National
championships almost on our doorstep in the middle of the year. Coomera for the States
and Kawana for the Nationals.
We hope to progress with the shed extension at council’s pace, but we keep our fingers
crossed to have it completed (council permitting) this year.
Also, your committee is looking for a new or near new eight.
Hopefully, the fundraisers planned for this year will be as good or better then 2015, soplease PITCH IN.
Enjoy your rowing, and please be extra careful during the holiday season.

Not much change in circumstances since the previous

Returning to Boston in 2015 for the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta, my doubles partner, Geoff Rees
(Melbourne University Boat Club) and I set out not to fall foul of ‘unfair buoy penalties’ which were still raw
in our minds from 2014’s race. Hence, there was ‘unfinished business’ that required attention.
Our accommodation was in a most comfortable and accessible 100 year old timber ‘New England’ house
in Cambridge, next door to Harvard University. Prior to the Regatta (the world’s biggest two-day regatta),
we had 3 days of training on the River Charles, which is in such picturesque surroundings. By race day wewere used to our rental Sykes shell and Concept ‘Skinny’ oars.
This time round, we had a happy conclusion
to our campaign — victorious in our division
(Grand Masters 60-69 years). Our strategy
was to go very hard in the first mile of the 3
mile course, with the aim of rowing down
the two Grand Masters crews that started
ahead of us, and then consolidate our
position with more of a conservativeholding approach through to the finish,
making sure we covered the moves of any
crews attempting to overtake us.
The regatta course passes under 7 bridges and has 5 bends, so steering and alignment for the corners/
bends are very important involving tactical manoeuvring, whilst adhering to the rules of engagement for
overtaking of slower crews. Indeed, it was very satisfying to pass these two crews fairly early because they
were the same two crews that were moved up ahead of us in last year’s race as a result of the ‘buoy
injustice’, after convincingly rowing a faster ‘raw’ time. Racing in icy and blustery (mainly head) conditions,
we steadily built on our position, and rowed the course 22 seconds faster than the next quickest of the 12Grand Masters crews in the event.

The Head of the Yarra again brought out plenty of stories… perhaps the most interesting of which
relates to crew from the Partez Rowing Club in Japan. Their coach told me they row on the ’64 Olympic
course near Tokyo, and are one of close to 20 clubs utilising the same facility. They’ve also done the
‘Head-of-the-Charles’ on numerous occasions. They came 16th
in the Masters D division and hope tobe back in 2016.
As usual, the HOTY produced its share of dramas… there were plenty of near misses, but Toowong’s
John Bliss bemoaned the fact his crew had been involved in a four boat mishap at the Big Bend… no
major damage though.
Read on and weep… Director of Rowing at Xavier College Simon Harrison (who facilitated our hire of
the eight for Roy’s crew) told us the school was getting another new eight… this time an Empacher… so
what you say… well, the cost is 70,000 dollars… and oh… a set of blades gets thrown in!
Speaking of boats… you may
have noticed another eight at
the shed… it was picked up
from Dragons Rowing Club (a
bit cheaper than the above
price!) and rowed in the ‘Head
of the Brisbane’ by Roy’s mixed
crew in which they came secondin their division over the 10
kilometre course… great effort!
There’ll be plenty of soul searching in the weeks and months ahead with the Queensland and Australian
Masters on over a fortnight period. Worse is that one’s at Coomera and one at Kawana, which will be
getting a spruce up for its biggest-ever rowing event. Colleen is on the Committee of Management for
Kawana and advises it will test resources to the max. Don’t doubt that for a minute!
Testing time too for the new course at Wyaralong… haven’t seen it yet, but it will open the batting with
the State Championships on the 23-24 January… be interesting to get feedback!
And congratulations are in order for our own Richard Hyett who has just been made a life member of
the Sunshine Coast Law Society…. well done Richard!

SUNSHINE COAST RC
PREMIERSHIP
REGATTA 2015
Held on Lake Kawana in late October, the club’s
biennial regatta saw a modest turnout of
competitors showcase their wares on what were
reasonably good conditions.
Plenty of volunteers put their shoulder to the
wheel to help out, and by so doing we raised
some $653.20 was made through catering alone.
We also received a percentage of seat fees from
RQ amounting to $1134.
On the water, Cristie Stoddart got silver in a
women’s double composite with Centenary,
Armando Serafin and Lisa Mason silver in a
mixed double, while bronze was won by Tess
Martin-Wallace and Lisa in a women’s double,
Rod Hutchinson and Ted Egerton in the men’s
equivalent, while Rod also came third in his
single. Congrats to all!

AUSTRALIAN INDOOR ROWING
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
Ian Luxford and Csilla Faller
from our club decided to give it
a go at the Australian Indoor
Rowing Championships in
Brisbane. Both tackled the 2km
distance… well, it was hard, to
say the least, but the mission
was a success. Both Ian and
Csilla won their respective age
group race. Ian claimed the Australian record with a time of
6:41.1 — that is an incredible
result that also puts him into 3rd
place in the World Rankings.
Csilla currently stands in 3rd
place in the Australian Rankings
with her result this year.
AUSTRALIAN MASTERS UPDATE
The showpiece of the Masters rowing calendar will be held from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday
5th June at a venue which will be given somewhat of a makeover for the event, so even at this
stage it’s not a bad idea to be thinking of possible crews. For further updates refer to the RQ
website.
Preceding Kawana, the State
Masters at Coomera has been
moved now to 21-22 May…two
weeks before the Nationals, and formost a much better time slot.
The Pan Pac Masters is set down for
5-6 November…also at Coomera.
2016 is shaping up as a big year for rowing in the Sunshine State…
highlighted obviously by the Australian Masters at Lake Kawana.

2015 Head of the Yarra
The 57th running of Australia’s rowing classic, the
‘Head of the Yarra’ saw a race record field of 231
eights contest the 8.6 kilometre event from the
CBD of Melbourne out to the Hawthorn Rowing
Club on the 28th November.
Conditions proved ideal for the race with records smashed in
numerous categories…an occurrence not seen in the event
since the 1980’s.
And it was not one club really
dominating…16 clubs or schools
medalled in the 25 categories, with
MUBC the most successful with four wins
including the Male Open section in the
record time of 24.40.19. Four others also
had multiple gongs…ANA, Canberra,MLC and Scotch College two each, while
Mercantile had three wins highlighted by
the Female Open success…also in record
time of 27.05.51.

Our own crews did well…Rod Hutchinson and
Ted Egerton (with Toowong) came in second in
the Male Masters H+ division, Sjoerd Dykstra,
Lofty, Des Pickering and Peter Fulcher (with North
Esk) seventh in the same category, while the
Mixed E crew of Roy and Cathy Peterson, Paul

Thompson, Kirsten Spindler and Csilla Faller plus
cox David Vautin were sixth out of 18 crews in
34.04.72. Interestingly, they rowed a faster
elapsed time than John Simson’s Canberraeight, but as Canberra was an H outfit (the only
one in the section) it won on handicap!

SCRC CHRISTMAS CRUISE
To celebrate the festive season, the club this time decided (just for
something different) to spend it on the water!
In truth, that's just what more than 30
people did on Maroochy River Cruises in
early December. It enabled everyone to
mix and move around, and the general
consensus was it should be repeated at a
suitable opportunity in the future.
At least
we didn't have to steer or watch out for
other boats!
Photos of the event are available here.
