AN INTRODUCTION TO CAMTASIA

TERMINOLOGY

Screencasting or Screen Capture –a digital recording of your computer screen and is used when you wish to teach or instruct and usually includes narration Camtasia -a software that can record your computer screen’s activity, audio and web cam video and narrate existing PowerPoint presentations. Through Camtasia, you can record, edit, produce and share course content. Script –the written text of your voice over or narration for a video Script board –the combination of a script and a storyboard. The ability to plan out your narration and visuals so you can insure that your instructions are on point Clip –a video, image or audio file Split –the way to separate one clip into two Effects –enables you to add interest to you video by using transitions, pans, zooms, filters, and callouts to your project Transitions –to move smoothly from one clip to another through the use of fades, dissolves and wipes. Pans –the ability to move your screen up and down or side ways. Zooms –allows you to get a closer view on a specific area of your screen Callout –directs the attention of the viewer to a specific location in your video

TERMINOLOGY

Clip Bin –Here is where you store all of the recordings and other media you plan to use in your Camtasia project. Additional tabs can be found in the Clip Bin, which give the option to add other effects to your video. Canvas –This is the visual preview of your finished video. Timeline –The sequence of all video clips and other media. Use the Timeline to assemble and edit your video. Play head –is your tool for previewing, editing, and rearranging entire sections of your clips. Render–When your computer processes the information collected from the video that you have just assembled including the audio, images and effects that you’ve applied to it and spits it out as one video that includes everything. TechSmith Recordings (.camrec or .trec files) These files contain screen video, microphone audio, webcam recordings, and cursor data Images (.png, .jpeg, etc.) Often used as title slides or other visual flair. Audio (.wav, .mp3, etc.) Background music tracks or narration recorded outside of Camtasia. Camtasia Project (.camproj) References all of your other media files. Open this file when you want to continue editing your video project.

Never begin any video production project without knowing what you will record. A surefire timesaver is to create a script or outline of what your will record.

Next, have your software or website ready to go at the time when you will begin recording.

Last, to get comfortable in your new environment. Practice, practice again and then practice some more

Always use a USB microphone to capture the best audio. Here are two I recommend. I personally use the Audio Technica.

Getting Started

To get started lets look at your Camtasia recorder

Opens the recorder below

Opens Camtasia Studio Editor

Set your area to record to the default FULL SCREEN Turn on the webcam if

you wish to record yourself along with your screen

Make sure the correct microphone is selected and activate the system audio if you wish to record sounds emanating from your computer

Begin recording by clicking the red REC button


Recording your first tutorial

Recorder window changes to a timer when in record mode and you can delete, pause and stop recording whenever you need to.

When you have completed your recording, Camtasia will create a preview for you to review. You will then be able to save and immediately edit your recording, produce your recording as a shareable file or delete your recording in its entirety.

Camtasia Project FilesHere is a look and the types of files you will use in your Camtasia projects.

TechSmith Recordings (.camrec or .trec files) These files contain screen video, microphone audio, webcam recordings, and cursor information

Images (.png, .jpeg, etc.) Can be used as titles or to add some pizazz to your project

Audio (.wav, .mp3, etc.) Music tracks or voice overs recorded outside of Camtasia.

Camtasia Project (.camproj) Contains your editing video project.

Default Startup Window

When you open Camtasia for the first time, the Camtasia Studio Default startup window will open. From here you can Record your screen, Import media or open a recent project.


Editing your recording

Clip Bin - All of your raw recording files and imported media files are housed here for you to have easy access to while you edit your project. Below this area are tabs that enable you to add other effects and elements to your video.

Canvas - This is the visual preview or working area for your video. You can also adjust the dimensions of your project in this window by selecting cccccccc which opens the editing dimensions window above.



Timeline - The sequence of all video clips and other media. Use the Timeline to assemble and edit your video.



The Playhead is used to preview, edit, and arrange sections of your clips.

When you want to remove a portion of your clip simply drag the green and red handles to cover the area you need to remove.

To remove the end portion of any clip you can trim by hovering your cursor on that area of the clip until the end is highlighted and drag the clip to where you want the clip to end.


Adding effects

Use callouts if you wish to draw attention to a specific area in your video, with arrows, spotlights, highlights, text, blurs, sketch motion drawings.


Adding effectsTo cut from one clip to another try using transitions. To add transitions to your clips simply select the Transitions tab, find your desired transition, right click and select Add to selected media.


Exporting and sharing your video

When you are done editing your video, you can produce and share by click the tab at the top of your clip bin and select how your would like to share or produce your video. If you select Produce and share then…

The production wizard opens and you can view the drop down menu for your choices. If you choose to export as an MP4 then

Choose a name for your production and where you would like to save it. Click Finish and then

A Rendering window will open which tracks the rendering progress of your video. Once completed your finished video will open.
