Where’s the Creek? (“Pilgrim Road” edition)

23Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus

Christ. 24Grace be with all who have an undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 6.23-24

For these last months of Interim ministry I have been finding answers to my question “Where’s the Creek”?

Most clearly I find who we are as a community of faith in Worship. Each Sunday I have the honor of

seeing in your faces a people seeking an experience of God, and the warm, comforting boost of Christian

fellowship. I hear your voices in song, prayer and the liturgy. We share the same cup and partake of the one

loaf.

I also see the “Creek” in the unfolding work of the various planning Commissions. They work to create

ministry sometimes with excitement and sometimes with perplexity; but always seeking to discern the will of

God.

I find the “Creek” in a wonderful staff who sense their call to serve here, and express an eagerness for the

ministry to which they have been called.

Each one of us will experience Sugar Creek in our unique way and through our own eyes. My hope is

always that this sacred place dedicated in service to God in Christ will be a space where your spirit may find

what you need. 1Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in

the congregation. Psalm 111.1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSM96OA39ic 4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The

Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving

let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will

guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is

honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any

excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:4-9

Thank You Messages

To the VBS Volunteer Staff, Another extraordinary year of Surf Shack VBS was a success thanks to the many people who gave

generously of their time, talents, creativity and love! Catch the wave of God’s amazing love was our overarching theme, and you could see that throughout the many months that the Planning Team met; the 30+ volunteers who came on 4 Saturday’s to create, paint and build; the many who came throughout the week leading up to Surf Shack who quietly worked behind the scenes; the many hours that the rotation leaders put in to make the daily themes come to life (Storytelling, Science, Games, Crafts and Snacks); and the 50 + volunteers and 37 youth who truly showed God’s love to the 85 children who attended Surf Shack.

It was a blessing to see so many children and their families be “bucket fillers” by supporting the Snuggled Up ministry by raising over $1600 to purchase beds and bedding for children in Dayton, as well as bringing in over 500 hygiene pantry items for the Miracle Maker’s program at Ruskin School in Dayton. To say these two local organizations were grateful is an understatement!

Amazing blessings to each of you, Skipper (Wendy)

A Note from B&G: The sanctuary can seat over 200 people. We have 78 defined parking spots, plus about 15 overflow spots. So please car pool when we expect a high attendance.

B&G Trivia For fun, each month we will include two trivia questions for you. See if you know the answers. 1. Are all of our parking spaces the same width? 2. How many exterior hose bibbs (faucets) are there?

Recycling Aluminum Cans Remember to bring your aluminum cans to the church and put them inside the containers

located in the outside alcove at the new entrance—below the church office windows. The money from the cans goes to support the youth mission trips. It is good stewardship to recycle your cans and great for the youth who benefit from your donation.

Recycling of papers, cans, and bottles is also good to do. However, it is just as well to do that at home, as it no longer generates any income for the church.

Children’s Ministry

Kirkmont Summer Camp Thanks to the generosity of the congregation at Sugar Creek, we were able to send 21 children and youth to Kirkmont Center this summer, for a total cost of $3430 in camper scholarships. For many of our children and youth, their ability to participate in camp without the scholarships would have been difficult, so thank you for making that possible for them!

Surf Shack VBS Wrap-Up Surf Shack…Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love had 85 Surfers who learned how to spread the message of God’s amazing love in our lives and to Remember that the Lord is great and awesome! We had over 37 youth and 50 adults who made this extraordinary week possible. A large thank you goes out to the Planning Team who begins meeting in January and gives so much of their time in planning, creating, organizing and equipping the many people who help lead the children in a transforming week! Take a moment to thank someone on the planning team for their dedication to the VBS ministry: Jim Berkshire, Colleen Biers, Jenni Cyprych, George Lamb, Jackie Myers, JoAnne Riddell and Wendy Berkshire. Our whole week was learning how to be “bucket fillers” in each other’s lives, filling people’s invisible buckets with love, kindness, generosity, care and fun! The surfers were truly bucket fillers to two area organizations through mission, the Miracle Makers and Snuggled Up. The Miracle Makers is an extended care partnership between East End Community and Ruskin Elementary school in the city of Dayton, and our surfers donated over 500 items to start a hygiene pantry at the school for the children and the families.

Trivia Answers: 1. No, most in the upper lot are only 7 foot 8 inches, while those in the lower lot are 9 foot, as are the ones in the upper lot

by the basketball net. 2. Three: one outside of the kitchen, one near the ramp sanctuary entrance, and one on the north side near the HVAC for the

kitchen.

Surf Shack VBS Wrap-Up (Cont.) This is our second year in a row supporting the great work that Ellen Mays and her team are doing for the children in their community. Our children/surfers and their families also donated an astonishing financial amount of $1600 which was given to Snuggled Up, a local organization that provides beds and bedding for children who have none in their homes. This generosity made sure that over 16 children are no longer sleeping on the floor! Giving the children at VBS the opportunity to make a difference in another child’s life is the foundation for growing children into being servants for Christ. Finally, our sets and props that we design for VBS are rented out and travel throughout the summer to four area churches before they return back to us, blessing over 175 more children and countless youth and adults. The churches that received our sets were Central Presbyterian Church, Harmony Creek UCC, Normandy United Methodist Church and Abiding Christ Lutheran Church. Just one more way that we share God’s amazing love outside of Sugar Creek!

Cleaning Crew Needed On Saturday, August 20 from 10 am to noon, Wendy is looking for some enthusiastic people to help get our classrooms and Nursery/Toddler Room ready for the fall start-up of GYD (Growing Young Disciples) and t.y.p. There are always supplies to be put away, classrooms to be stocked and special areas to be created. Each room will need to be set up for the children that will be coming to grow in faith and Good News of God’s amazing love. Please contact Wendy if you are able to donate a few hours of time on Aug. 20 or sign the blue sheet in Worship. (298-3743 or [email protected]).

t.y.p. Start-Up! On Thursday, September 15, all children ages 4 through the 6th grade will be welcomed back to another year of t.y.p. (Thursday Youth Program). It is VERY exciting to note that this is the 50th year of the ministry of t.y.p., which says so much about the relevance of this children’s ministry. We will be planning a very special fall gathering to celebrate!

Every Thursday children are invited to participate in Worship, choirs and classes structured for their age groups, ending the evening with a family-style meal at 6:15 pm. Packets for eligible children will be mailed out by August 22. Wendy will also be seeking volunteers to help with meal preparation and/or desserts each week.

We are so happy to welcome back as volunteer staff Jeanna Bennett (preschool teacher), Cate O’Malley (Director for the Angels), and Tony Peters (opening Worship leader). As of this writing, the Human Resources Committee is still working diligently at securing a Salt & Light choir director. Hopefully they will have news soon! See Wendy for further questions and/or details.

Nursery/Toddler Caregivers Needed An easy yet very important way you can volunteer in a ministry at Sugar Creek is to become a volunteer in our Nursery/Toddler Room. Wendy is beginning the recruitment for our Caregiver rotation for the program calendar year of September through May, 2017. TWO volunteers are needed each week in the Nursery/Toddler Room (note: one volunteer must be a trained adult and the second volunteer can be a youth in 9th

grade or higher). This ministry is key to young families, to provide a safe and nurturing space for their babies and toddlers. Please let Wendy know if you’d like more information on how to get connected.

GYD (Growing Young Disciples) and Holy Chaos Our fall start-up will begin on Sunday, Sept. 11 on Rally Day! We will kick off the new ministry program year for children, youth and adults with Worship at 10:00 am, the presentation of Bibles to preschoolers, children and youth, and the opening Sunday of GYD. Following worship, there will be a time of fellowship led by the Congregational Fellowship, and we are sure ice cream will be involved! GYD (Growing Young Disciples) is offered each Sunday morning, after joining the whole congregation

for opening Hymn, Confession and the Chancel Choir anthem. Children ages 3 through 6th grade will depart all together and be grouped into their age groups for a Workshop Rotation model, which will focus on one Bible Story for a 3-week period, learning the story in 3 different learning styles, much like VBS. There are 8 different Centers that will be developed, which will change every 3 weeks. The 4th week, the elementary age children remain in Worship with the congregation as they continue to learn the aspects of our worship order.

Preschool GYD will continue this fall using the Presbyterian Curriculum Growing in Grace and Gratitude.

The preschoolers will have their own class that they will go to each week after the time with the Pastor, and Wendy will be recruiting lead teachers for 2-week rotations.

Holy Chaos After Worship during the small group adult ReVive time, children whose parents or grandparents are participating will have the opportunity to be involved in Holy Chaos, a structured yet flexible and fun time of games, snacks and socialization. Holy Chaos each week is led by Miss Wendy.

Leader Recruitment for GYD GYD is a Workshop Rotation model, and Wendy will begin recruiting volunteers to commit to teaching one 2-week unit. The unit may be computers, cooking, art or science. In this way, a commitment of a 2-week period will be needed, but there is only one prep for each leader. On the 3rd week of each month, Wendy will be leading a group activity to tie in the learning from the previous two weeks, and on the 4th Sunday the 1st-6th graders will remain in Worship. Please prayerfully consider utilizing your gifts in this ministry.

Christian Nurture (Cont.) Youth Ministry Mission Month The month of June was an exciting time of serving for 17 of our High School students who participated in the Milwaukee Mission Trip through NextStep Ministries, and also for the 11 middle school students who participated in a week of local serving in Dayton. The youth who traveled July 12-18 for a week of service and building relationships within the Milwaukee community led Worship on July 11, and an audio version is available on the web site www.sugarcreekchurch.org. Also in the Cove is a handout which shows reflections from the youth and mid-dle school students on where they encountered Jesus while they were serving, and how it has challenged them in their faith. Their insights are very powerful, so please be sure to pick up a copy when you are in Church! An exciting result of serving in Milwaukee has been that the youth were challenged to “live outside of their box”, and have served in the community since their return. During June and July, many of our youth have served at:

Faith Haven, an inner city ministry for children at North Riverdale Lutheran Church The House of Bread First Dawn Food Pantry The Alzheimer’s Association

The youth are grateful to the congregation for their financial support that made it possible for them to travel to Milwaukee, as well as the heart-felt prayers that were answered in their hearts being opened to their friendship with Jesus and one another.

The Deacons Are Ready to Help. The Key Deacon is the Deacon who is primarily responsible for attending

to the needs of the hospitalized members/friends of the congregation. Also, when the pastor is away, the Key Deacon (along with the on-call pastor) is available to assist with any other special needs or concerns. Key Deacon for August will be announced in the bulletin insert on Sunday, August 7th.

Out of the Chaos: How a Stephen Minister can lend help It was August 19, 2001, my due date for my second child. My mom called. “I’m in the hospital. I am being transported from Greenville to Miami Valley Hospital. It is serious. They say it is leukemia.” On August 22, while I was having a C-section, my mom was recovering from her first round of chemo, both of us at Miami Valley Hospital. By Labor Day, I was back home recovering from my surgery, caring for my newborn, Zach, and my 21 month old, Abby. Rob and I also had converted the basement to a bedroom for my mom. Since my stepdad had been diagnosed with terminal cancer just a few weeks before my mom’s diagnosis, it was determined we would care for my mom while my step-siblings would care for my stepfather. This was a chaotic time. This was a time I could have used a Stephen Minister. A Stephen Minister would have come to the house once a week for an hour. She would have helped me cope with my new reality. She could have listened and helped me unload, which would have been a blessing to be able to dump some of my exhaustion. She would have been able to talk with me a couple of weeks into our visits when 9/11 occurred. She would have helped me cope with my feelings of being pulled in even more directions when I tried to return to work a few months later. I don’t want to give the impression that I never had anyone to help me during this time. I had lots of

people bring food. Neighbors helped watch the kids and run errands. Church members called. Friends of

my mom visited her when she was sick. I got lots of cards and hugs. But the benefit of having a Stephen

Minister is having one person who comes every week just to listen and to be with you, whatever the need is

at that time. Yes, Rob was there but he was suffering too. A Stephen Minister would have offered an ear

that was outside the chaos, and outside the emotion. So please reach out and ask for a Stephen Minister. I

wish the program existed back in 2001 for me because I really needed one.

Where Did They Live? Part II

During the years between Rev. J. B. McMichael’s two pastorates, Sugar Creek Church was served by two different ministers. In January, 1881, a young, unmarried Rev. William S. McClure became our pastor. We are not sure where he lived for the first year, but in December of 1882, the church bought the property just north of the church on Wilmington Pike for $1,000. This house is still there and is now owned by Owen family. Rev. McClure moved into the new residence and in 1883, he took a quick trip back to Beaver, Pennsylvania and married Nancy Imbrie on August 12th. This is where their two daughters were born. In 1884 and 1886, Rev. McClure helped the congregation repair the church building after two tornadoes. In April, 1893 Rev. McClure left Sugar Creek to answer a call in Greeley, Colorado, and the Rev. James Albert Wiley answered our call and started preaching at Sugar Creek Church in November of 1893.

Rev. Wiley and his wife, Emma, lived in the parsonage below the church on Wilmington Pike for just three years

when he resigned because of health problems in October, 1896. During his tenure, the membership continued to grow. Rev. J. B. McMichael returned in 1897 for a second tenure until his death on New Year’s Eve, 1902.

After Rev. J. B. McMichael’s death in 1902, the congregation immediately called his son, the Rev. William J. McMichael, to be our next pastor. He served from 1903 until 1908. Mrs. J. B. McMichael was still living in the parsonage below the church and since William McMichael was not married, he moved in with his mother. In 1904, Rev. “Will” McMichael helped celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary in September of 1904. In November, 1904 he married Anna Prugh Williamson, a member of our church. Being a conscientious mother, and knowing that a mother-in-law should not be living with a newly married couple, Mrs. J. B. McMichael moved out of the parsonage and lived in Xenia until 1913 when she passed away. In this parsonage, a daughter, Corrine, was born to Will and Anna McMichael in March, 1907. By the end of 1907, Rev. W. J. McMichael had accepted a call to the Greensburg U. P. Church in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Pieces of the Past...Where Did They Live (Cont.) On May 1, 1908 the Rev. Dr. John A. Henderson accepted the call to Sugar Creek Church. He,

with his wife, Flora, and their three children, Arthur, Bessie, and Mabel, moved into the gray

parsonage north of the church on Wilmington Pike. Of the six requests Rev. Henderson made of

the Session when he came to Sugar Creek, two concerned the parsonage. One was that a cooking

range be placed in the parsonage, which was granted, and the other was that a bath be installed in

the parsonage, which was not granted. Perhaps the majority of the church members, living on

farms, had no inside baths and toilets and saw no need to install one for the minister. The other

four requests were granted.

Rev. Henderson and his family lived in that parsonage until he received a call in 1921 to be the minister for the

First Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. During his 13 years at Sugar Creek, Rev. Henderson oversaw the

building of our present sanctuary after a fire destroyed the 1870 building in April, 1911. Besides his regular pastoral

duties, in 1914, he ran for the State Legislature on the Progressive Party ticket, lost, but got his message across that

Ohio should be a dry state (as part of the temperance movement) and that women should be allowed to vote. It is in

1915 when someone stole all of his chickens from the barn behind the parsonage and the women of the Women’s

Missionary Society replaced them by each donating a chicken from their farm flock.

In 1922, the Rev. Samuel R. Jamieson became our minister and moved into the gray

parsonage below the church with his wife Luna. Their two children, Earl and Lucille, had

already graduated from Miami University. During Rev. Jamieson’s pastorate, a new

parsonage closer to the church was built in 1923 and the gray parsonage was sold for

$8,000 and presently belongs to the Owens family. The new parsonage, as many older

members will remember, had a pastor’s study/library, a full modern kitchen with a

breakfast alcove, a garage in the basement, one bath upstairs with the three bedrooms, a

half bath downstairs next to the kitchen, and French doors between the dining room and

the living room. It was very modern for its time.

This new parsonage with a sidewalk connecting it to the church

served as the parsonage for the rest of Rev. Jamieson’s pastorate and

the pastorate of the Rev. Day Kennedy, 1936 to 1952. During Rev.

Kennedy’s time at Sugar Creek Church, we saw our church start to

change from a purely rural, farm church to a suburban church as new

housing plats were built around our church. Also, the parsonage was the scene of Rev. Kennedy’s

wife’s death on June 30, 1943 after a short illness.

Part III will be in the September Scribe.
