Why is Scrum working?
How is Scrum working?
Use Scrum for
Complex projects.
Do not use the
V-model nor the
Waterfall model!
There's no such thing as the Waterfall Approach!(and there never was)
MANAGING THE DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE SOFTWARE SYSTEMS, Dr. Winston W. Royce, Proceedings, IEEE WESCON, August 1970, pages 1-9
Dr. Winston W. Royce, the
“inventor” of the waterfall
model:
I believe in this concept,
but the implementation
described above is risky
and invites failure.

paper; has 1.2 Mio hits

How is Scrum working?
Wicked Problems and Social ComplexityDefinition of ‘wicked problem’
1. You don’t understand the problem until you have developed a solution.
2. Wicked problems have no stopping rule.
3. Solutions to wicked problems are not right or wrong.
4. Every wicked problem is essentially unique and novel.
5. Every solution to a wicked problem is a “one-shot operation.”
6. Wicked problems have no given alternative solutions.

Why is Scrum working?
How is Scrum working?
Light weight vs. heavy weight project frameworks
• Scrum = light weight project framework
• Need to add a few more things (e.g. Risk
management)
• Waterfall, Hermes, RUP = heavy weight
• Need to omit a few things (depending on project
setup and environment)
On both sides: some experience needed to judge
what to add or omit
What next?
• Look at examples of PBL, Burndown Charts, etc.
• Read mentioned key concepts and paperso Pareto
o Pomodoro Technique
o PDSA
o GTD
o Team processes
o The book Dialogue Mapping (incl. Wicked Problems)
o The original waterfall paper of Dr. Winston W. Royce
