Introduzione

strade e ferrovie saltate in aria, foreste polverizzate. Inoltre, avendo tutti
Molte industrie furono costrette a chiudere o
a licenziare dipendenti.
continuare a combattere, lavoro e terra.
religione sembravano offrire conforto o sicurezza.
era in continua crescita.
10
affidamento soprattutto sui prestiti statunitensi.
e mezzo a sei milioni.
nuova teoria dell’inconscio derivanti dall’influenza freudiana.
Virginia Woolf, A Farewell to Arms di Ernest Hemingway e Goodbye to
all that di Robert Graves.
Quindi, crebbe in
Iniziò a
primo romanzo The Voyage Out (la crociera), che seguiva ancora uno
stile tradizionale.
Seguirono To the Lighthouse (Gita al faro) pubblicato nel 1927 e
16
Common Reader (Il lettore comune). Nell’ottobre del 1929 pubblicò A
Room of One’s Own (Una stanza tutta per sé), opera di grande impatto
paure. Nell’estate del 1940, Virginia lavorò al romanzo Between the acts
I Bradshaw arrivano
all'interno del romanzo. Mrs. Dalloway viene a conoscenza
In qualche modo preferisce
Lui in guerra aveva ucciso molti
prendersi pallottole o a farsi saltare in aria.
morì proprio davanti a suoi occhi.
“But when Evans was killed, just before the Armistice, in Italy, Septimus, far
from showing any emotion or recognising that here was the end of a friendship,
congratulated himself upon feeling very little and very reasonably. The War had
taught him. It was sublime. He had gone through the whole show, friendship,
21
European War, death, had won promotion, was still under thirty and was bound to
survive. He was right there. The last shells missed him. He watched them explode
with indifference.”2

attribuite varie relazioni sentimentali.
Nel 1926 pubblicò The Sun
Also Rises (Il sole sorgerà ancora), che in Inghilterra uscì col nome di
Fiesta.
importanti: coraggio, cameratismo e resistenza.
Questa esperienza influenzò alcune sue opere successive come The Snow
of Kilimanjaro (Le nevi del Kilimangiaro) e The Green Hills of Africa
24
esperienza venne poi testimoniata in For Whom the Bell Tolls ( Per chi
suona la campana), del 1940. The Old Man and The Sea (il vecchio e il
criticati Across the River and into the Trees (Di là dal fiume e tra gli
The Garden of Eden (Il giardino dell'Eden) del 1986.
I suoi
25
2.2.1 L’Opera: A Farewell to Arms
infermiera inglese, Catherine Barkley. Tra i due nasce un rapporto che
dapprima sembrò occasionale, ma poi diviene rapidamente intenso e
passionale.
l’attacco austro-tedesco a Caporetto.
27
provano i personaggi.
“It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the
hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain”4
(Fu come salutare una statua. Dopo un po’ me ne andai e uscii dall’ospedale

“I went to a gymnasium in the arcade to box for exercise” 6
“And good news. You will be decorated. They want to get you the medaglia
d’argento but perhaps they can get only the bronze. What for? Because you are
gravely wounded. They say if you can prove you did anything heroic you can get the
silver. Otherwise it will be the bronze. Tell me exactly what happened. Did you do
any heroic act? No, I said. I was blown up while we were eating cheese.”8
(E buone notizie. Sarai decorato. Vogliono darti una medaglia d’argento ma
forse ti daranno solo quella di bronzo. Perché?. Perché sei ferito gravemente.
6 Ivi p.275. 7Ivi p.562. 8 Ivi p.58-59.
29
forze italiane vengono duramente sconfitte dall’Impero austro-ungarico.
successo.

2.3 Robert Graves: Biografia
Compì i
Goliath and David (Davide e Golia) e Fairies and Fusiliers (Fate e
esperienza di guerra ispirò la stesura di Goodbye to all that (Addio a
31
lavoro di scrittore. Lasciò l'isola solo negli anni compresi fra il 1961 e il
1966, per insegnare poetica a Oxford e per tenere, occasionalmente,
conferenze in diverse università americane.
1943 compose The reader over your shoulder (Il lettore alle vostre
Interessanti i saggi
critici, tra cui The White Goddess (La dea bianca) del 1948 e The
Common Asphodel (L'asfodelo comune) del 1949. Nello stesso anno
pubblica anche Seven Days in New Crete (Sette giorni fra mille anni).
Negli anni Sessanta insegnò a Oxford e tenne conferenze negli
Stati Uniti. Tornato a Maiorca, vi morì a novant’anni, nel 1985.
32
2.3.1 L’Opera: Goodbye to all that
l’opera, all’età di 35 anni.
chiudere. Si trasferirono in Egitto, dove insegnò letteratura inglese
all'Università del Cairo.
passato.
“So I went abroad, resolved never to make England my home again; which
explains the 'Goodbye to All That' of this title”10
10 Graves Robert, Goodbye to all that, Modern Classics, London, 2000, p.269 11Traduzione a cura di Francesca Annunziata
34
L’analisi:
passato. Goodbye to all that marcò uno spartiacque emotivo:
“A story of what I was, not I am. An opportunity for a formal goodbye to you
and to you and to you and to me and to all that; forgetfulness because once all of this
has been settled in my mind and written down and published it need never be thought
about again” 12
nichts Neues dello scrittore tedesco Erich Maria Remarque.
“War continuance seemed merely a sacrifice of the idealistic younger
generation to the stupidity and self-protective alarm of the elder.”14
Aggiungendo:
“War should be a sport for men above forty-five only, the Jesse's, not the
David's. Well, dear father, how proud I am of you serving your country as a very
gallant gentleman prepared to make even the supreme sacrifice. I only wish I were
your age: how willingly would I buckle on my armour and fight those unspeakable
Philistines! As it is, of course, I can’t be spared; I have to stay behind at the War
Office and administrate for you lucky old men. What sacrifices I have made!”16
sacrificio! Come vorrei avere la tua età: con quanto entusiasmo indosserei
l’armatura e andrei a combattere quegli abominevoli filistei!

“I find it very difficult to like the French here, I have not met a single case of
the hospitality that one meets among the peasants of other countries. It is worse than
inhospitality here, for after all we are fighting for their dirty little lives”.18

guerra prima o poi, eppure nessuno ci badava)21

Divenne
Brecht scrisse alcuni pezzi teatrali, i cosiddetti Lehrstücke (drammi
I suoi libri vennero considerati anti-
tedeschi e bruciati nel rogo del 10 maggio. Dal 1933 al 1947 risedette in
esilio in Danimarca, Svezia, Finlandia, Unione Sovietica e Stati Uniti.
(Madre Coraggio e i suoi figli).
soprattutto all'attività di regista.

3.1.1 Legende vom toten Soldaten (1918) B. Brecht

48
3.2 Erich Maria Remarque: Biografia
51
3.2.1 L’Opera: Im Westen nichts Neues

chi la guerra non l’ha mai vista;
Hand”26
(Mentre essi continuavano a scrivere e a parlare, noi vedevamo gli ospedali e
giocava a carte.

Was soll danach noch geschehen? Und was soll aus uns
werden?”30

Interruppe ben
presto i suoi studi, lasciando il liceo senza un diploma. In un primo
momento lavorò come agricoltore, poi giornalista e, infine, come
redattore editoriale.
dall’ espressionismo Der junge Godeschal (Il giovane Godeschal).Ebbe
Fallada divenne immediatamente
famoso con Kleiner Mann, was nun?
now?.
58
3.3.1 L’Opera: Kleiner Mann, was nun?
rispettivi genitori, e vanno a vivere a Ducherow, dove Pinnenberg lavora
come contabile.
Grazie all’aiuto dell’amante
in tronco, senza preavviso.

60
L’analisi:
in coincidenza dell’uscita dell’ultima puntata. Ottiene immediatamente
stesso anno 1932 vengono vendute ben 48.000 copie e viene subito
tradotto e pubblicato da almeno altre dieci case editrici straniere. In Italia
linguaggio asciutto e conciso.
Il titolo è importante, perché quello originale tedesco è “Kleiner
Mann” e cioè letteralmente “piccolo uomo”, “uomo qualunque”, “uomo

scriveva Brecht:

Prima ci sono state altre guerre. Alla
fine dell'ultima c'erano vincitori e vinti.

Introduction
The purpose of this study is to analyse the radical change, which
took place in the entire western society in the years between the two
World Wars, through the works of English, American, and German
authors, who were at the same time witnesses and narrators of events,
which definitively transformed the course of history and had very
important consequences. My dissertation is divided into 3 chapters. The
first one is aimed at describing the European historical context after the
First World War. It is in turn divided into three paragraphs, respectively
dealing with Great Britain, the United States and Germany. The other
two chapters concern the literary theme. The second one deals with
English literature and the authors I have chosen are Virginia Woolf,
Ernest Hemingway and Robert Graves. I talk about their lives and for
each of them I analyse one specific work of theirs. The third one deals
with German literature and the authors I have chosen are Bertolt Brecht,
Erich Maria Remarque and Hans Fallada. Once again, I talk about their
lives and for each of them I analyse one specific work of theirs.
68
1. Europe after the First World War
The population losses and economic disruptions caused by four
and a half years of total war were immense. Around 10 million men were
killed in actual fighting, another 7 million were permanently disabled
and a further 15 million were more or less seriously wounded. In
addition, Europe probably lost over 5 million civilian casualties through
what has been termed “war-induced causes” such as famine and disease.
The wartime birth deficits, caused by so many men being at the front,
were also extremely high. The material costs of the war were also
unprecedented. Hundreds of thousands of houses were destroyed, roads
and railways blown up, livestock slaughtered, forests pulverized, and
vast tracts of land rendered unfit for farming because of unexploded
shells and mines. The loss of human lives, combined with the destruction
of land and property, led to a complete transformation on the entire
social and economic system of the countries involved in the conflict. The
optimism of la belle époque was destroyed, and those who had fought in
the war were referred to as the Lost Generation. After decades of growth,
world-manufacturing production turned sharply down, agricultural
production was about one-third below normal, and the volume of exports
was only around half what it was in the pre-war period. Living

conditions declined dramatically and unemployment was rampant. There
is no known way of measuring the personal anguish and the
psychological shocks involved in such a human catastrophe, but it is
easy to say that it affected deeply everyone. Many soldiers came back
home with severe traumas, suffering from shell shock (also called
neurasthenia, a condition related to post-traumatic stress disorder).
Nationalism, faith in government, belief in religion, were all ruptured by
the end of the conflict. The Peace of Versailles, signed on 28 June 1919,
was aimed at making the Great War “the war to end all wars”. However,
instead of preventing future wars it made a future war inevitable.
Germany was humiliated and that is why it will seek revenge in the
future. In 1920, the League of Nations was founded. Its objective was to
ensure that war never broke out again. However, without the losing
Germany, the revolutionary Russia and the isolationist United States, it
was a weak and destined to fail. The end of WWI had enormous
consequences and brought changes not only at macroscopic level,
modifying the geopolitical borders of Europe, but also at microscopic
level, changing radically the way of acting and thinking of people. These
are the reasons why the effect on European and, more in general,
Western literature was unprecedented.
70
1.1 Britain after the First World War
The First World War, in which almost a million British soldiers
died, left the country in a disillusioned and cynical mood and it marked
the beginning of the end of Britain’s role as a leading Great Power.
Some soldiers celebrated their return home with a frantic search for
pleasure; others were haunted by a sense of guilt for the horrors of trench
warfare. The gap between the generation of the young and the older one,
regarded as responsible for the waste of lives during the war, grew wider
and wider. Nothing seemed to be certain or right, even science and
religion seemed to offer little comfort or security. The feelings of
rootlessness and frustration were strengthened by the serious economic
and political problems that Britain had to face once the War was over.
The U.K. was the country which was most affected by post-war
crisis. First because heavily indebted with the U.S., moreover many
factories closed, wages were lowered and the cost of living,
unemployment and taxes increased. This widespread economic and
social unease produced frequent protests. In fact, the Labour Party rose
rapidly and trade unions became more active in trying to get better
wages and conditions by holding strikes. During the 1920s, the constant
disputes between the coal miners and the mine owners eventually led to
the General Strike of 1926.
71
Moreover, in 1919, Ireland took advantage of the situation of
chaos in the U.K. and declared Independence from Great Britain. It must
be said, however, that the country after WWI was more democratic and
less sexist. Indeed women obtained the right to vote.
1.2 The U.S. after the First World War
Differently from all other European contexts, the first ten years of
post-war in the U.S. were a period of prosperity, economic growth and
social tranquillity, the so-called “roaring twenties” or “jazz age”. The
economy grew quickly and huge resources were invested to create new
industries and jobs because there was little competition from Europe.
Moreover, in 1920 women gained the right to vote. A revival of
puritanical attitudes imposed the Eighteenth Amendment to the
Constitution, prohibiting the manufacture, consumption and import of
alcohol. This drastic step, which was taken to fight the problem of
alcohol consumption, fostered the illegal traffic of bootleggers, who
imported or produced liquor illegally, and increased the phenomenon of
gangsterism.
Then, in 1929, came the collapse of the American stock market,
known as the Wall Street Crash. It marked the end of the prosperous
72
Twenties and the beginning of the Great Depression. Thousands of
businessmen were ruined, and millions of common people, who had
invested their savings in shares, found themselves facing debt. Factories
shut down, banks crashed, goods piled up in warehouse. In 1932,
Franklin Delano Roosevelt became president and promised the
Americans a New Deal of reforms.
1.3 Germany after the First World War
German reactions to the war, the horrors of it, and the defeat that
ended it, were bound to be many and varied. Germany had lost 2 million
men in the war. Uncertainty loomed particularly for the men, streaming
back from the western, southern and eastern front and frontiers. At
home, they found a mood vastly different from the patriotic euphoria that
had accompanied their departure. Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated as the
country slipped into varying degrees of revolution and social unrest (the
German Revolution or November Revolution). In January 1919,
following the General Strike, the Communists rose up in revolt in Berlin.
What has become known as the “Spartacist Uprising” was a short but
bloody revolutionary conflict. The revolt culminated in its violent
suppression. Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, the two leaders of
73
the revolt, were murdered. The revolutionary period lasted from
November 1918 until the establishment in August 1919 of a republic
(which later became known as the “Weimar Republic”).
Germany was forced to pay 132 billion marks in reparations.
Hyperinflation plagued Germany between 1921 and 1923. In December
1922 the Reparations Commission declared Germany in default, and on
11 January 1923 French and Belgian troops occupied the Ruhr until
1925. Unemployment increased and the majority of people lived in very
poor conditions. Nazi propaganda would feed on a general German view
that the Versailles treaty was unfair. In 1923, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi
Party tried to take advantage of the crisis facing the Weimar government
by instigating a revolution in Munich (The Munich Putsch). It seemed
like the perfect opportunity, but poor planning and misjudgement
resulted in failure and the subsequent imprisonment of Adolf Hitler
(during this period he wrote the well-known Mein Kampf). In 1925, Paul
von Hindenburg was elected President. He appointed Hitler as chancellor
in January 1933. When Hindenburg died, in 1934, Hitler took also his
position as President and became the Führer.

2. English literature
Literature between the two wars, on both sides of the ocean,
expresses all the perplexities of an age whose key words were isolation,
alienation, and, to quote the title of a poem by W.H. Auden, anxiety. In
those years, the role of the writers consisted in mediating between the
solid and unquestioned values of the past and the confused and uncertain
present. However, two other factors contributed to producing the so-
called modern novel: the new concept of time and the new theory of the
unconscious deriving from Freudian influence. Novelist rejected
omniscient narration and the viewpoint shifted from the external world
to the internal world of a character’s mind. The stories are more
confused and less linear. The stream of consciousness technique, or
interior monologue, was introduced to reproduce the uninterrupted flow
of thoughts, sensations, memories, associations and emotions in a flux of
words, ideas and images quite similar to the mind’s activity. The works
taken into consideration, are Mrs. Dalloway of Virginia Woolf, A
Farewell to Arms of Ernest Hemingway and Goodbye to all that of
Robert Graves. In the following paragraphs, for each author, it has been
analysed the life, the literary career and a specific work which is taken as
symbol of the literature during the interwar period.
75
2.1 Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf was born on January 25th 1882, in London. Apart
from a few courses at the King’s college of London, she was taught at
home in her father's library. The death of her mother in 1895, when
Virginia was only thirteen, affected her deeply and brought about her
first nervous breakdown. She began to rebel against her father, who was
aggressive and tyrannical to her. It was only after his death, in 1904, that
she began her literary career. She moved to Bloomsbury and, together
with her sister Vanessa, she became a member of the Bloomsbury Group,
which included the avant-garde of early 20th-century London. In 1912,
Virginia married Leonard Woolf. In 1915, she published her first novel
The Voyage Out and attempted suicide for the first time. In 1925, the
novel Mrs Dalloway, in which Woolf successfully experimented with
new narrative techniques, was released; followed by To the Lighthouse,
dated 1927, and Orlando, dated 1928. She was also a very talented
literary critic and a brilliant essayist, as The Common Reader (1925),
shows. In 1929, she published A Room of One’s Own and began to write
The waves. The Second World War increased her anxiety and fear.
Finally, she could stand it no longer and committed suicide in 1941, at
the age of fifty-nine.
76
2.1.1 Mrs Dalloway
Plot The story begins on a Wednesday morning of mid-June 1923 with
Clarissa Dalloway, the protagonist of the novel, going to Bond Street to
buy some flowers for the party she is throwing that evening at her house.
While she is in the flower shop, a car drives noisily past and shifts the
attention to the street, where Septimus and Lucrezia Warren Smith are
walking. He is a WWI veteran who was injured in trench warfare and
now suffers from shell shock and she is his Italian wife.
Clarissa walks back home and there she receives an unexpected
visit from Peter Walsh, the man who was in love with her when they
were young. He then leaves Clarissa’s house and goes to Regent’s Park,
where he catches a glimpse of the Warren Smiths, who are going to Sir
William Bradshaw, the famous nerve specialist, for an interview. The
interview results in Sir William’s arranging for Septimus to go into a
mental institution. At 6 p.m., Septimus commits suicide.
All the characters who have been in some way important during
the day are present at Clarissa’s party. The Bradshaw arrive and Clarissa
hears from them of Septimus’s death, with whom she feels a strong
connection.
77
Analysis
Virginia Woolf is interested in giving voice to the complex inner
world of feelings and memories. Therefore, the events that traditionally
make up the story are no longer important for her, what matters is the
impression they make on the characters who experience them. The
omniscient narrator disappears and the point of view shifts inside the
character’s mind through flashbacks, associations of ideas, momentary
impressions presented as a continuous flux. Mrs. Dalloway is a unique
novel in that it takes place, like Joyce’s Ulysses , on a single day. Unlike
Joyce, however, Woolf does not elevate her characters to the level of
myth, but shows their deep humanity behind their social mask. The novel
interweaves two seemingly unconnected storylines during this day. The
story of Clarissa Dalloway, a snob upper-class woman of fifty-one,
married with a conservative member of the parliament, and whose only
interest is to throw parties; and Septimus, a shell-shocked World War I
soldier, who is haunted by the spectre of his friend Evan, who died
during the conflict, and who suffers from headaches and insomnia. The
plot does not connect the two of them, apart from the news of his death
at her party. However, they are similar in many respects. None of them is
depicted as a hero, but rather as a sufferer or a survivor. Both characters
find life, quoting the book, “intolerable”, they feel trapped and
78
oppressed. Clarissa experiences this oppression in the form of societal
judgment, while Septimus feels oppressed by the images of war and the
doctors who are called in to help him deal with his shell-shock problem.
However, while Septimus cannot stand it anymore and takes the drastic
decision of committing suicide, Clarissa is more “adaptable”, and even if
she hates her empty and boring life, she decides to repress her feelings
and accepts it just as it is.
The part in which Septimus explains what he felt when his friend
Evan died is really touching and dramatic.
“But when Evans was killed, just before the Armistice, in Italy, Septimus, far
from showing any emotion or recognising that here was the end of a friendship,
congratulated himself upon feeling very little and very reasonably. The War had
taught him. It was sublime. He had gone through the whole show, friendship,
European War, death, had won promotion, was still under thirty and was bound to
survive. He was right there. The last shells missed him. He watched them explode
with indifference.”40
In the battlefield, the only important thing for Septimus was his
survival, his life. When his friend Evan died in front of him he felt
nothing, like he didn’t care. He was only an umpteenth victim of the war,
nothing more, nothing less.

79
2.2 Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21st 1899, in Oak Park,
Illinois. He spent his childhood hunting and fishing in the Great Lake
region with his father, and playing different sports such as boxing and
rugby. After graduating high school, he began writing for The Kansas
City Star. As soon as America decided to enter the Great War,
Hemingway tried to join the army. He was repeatedly rejected for
military service because of a defective eye, but finally in 1918 he entered
as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, where he was severely
wounded, and received a silver medal and decoration from the Italian
government. In 1922 he settled in Paris where he joined a group of
expatriate writers, called “The Lost Generation” . In 1924, he published
In Our Time , chiefly recalling the experience of his childhood. In 1926
he published The Sun Also Rises , with the name of Fiesta in Britain.
This book showed his love of exotic settings and extreme situations. In
1929 he published A Farewell to Arms , a love story set among the
horrors and sufferings of the war, and the best American novel ever
written on WWI. Four years later in 1933, he went on an African hunting
safari. This experience would lead to the writing of The Snow of
Kilimanjaro and The Green Hills of Africa . During the Spanish Civil
80
War he was a correspondent for an American news agency, and this
experience was recorded in For Whom the Bell Tolls of 1940. Thanks to
The Old Man and The Sea he won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize. In 1954 he
was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. His mental and physical
health worsened during this period, also due to Hemingway’s
alcoholism. He committed suicide in 1961.
2.2.1 A Farewell to Arms
Plot This novel deals with the story of an American ambulance driver,
Lieutenant Frederic Henry, on the Italian front during World War I.
There he falls in love with a beautiful English nurse, Catherine Barkley.
Henry is seriously wounded during a battle and is taken to an American
hospital in Milan for treatment. While Henry is recuperating, Catherine
Barkley is transferred to the same hospital. Once recovered, he has to
return to the front. Before he leaves, Catherine tells him she is pregnant.
On his return to the front, he finds himself in the retreat of the Italian
army after the Austro-German attack on Caporetto. Frederic decides to
desert the army, since all he wants is to be with Catherine. He makes his
way back to Milan and the two escape to Switzerland, where they live
for a while, waiting for the child’s birth. However, the book cannot have
81
a happy ending. During the childbirth, something goes wrong and both
Catherine and the baby die. Henry, now alone, walks back to his hotel in
the rain.
Analysis
The style is dry and essential characterized by simple syntax,
concise dialogue, brief descriptions and a straightforward language.
Differently from Virginia Woolf, there is very little introspection, or
analysis of personal feelings and sensations. Hemingway employs the
technique of the first- person narrator.
Frederic tells the story of his tragic love, set against the backdrop
of the Great War. Most of the characters remain ambivalent about war
and the novel, as well, cannot be said to condemn it, as it is presented as
something inevitable, the outcome of a cruel and senseless world. Once
again, like in many other novels of Hemingway, the rain is a recurring
symbol of death. In fact, at the end of the book, when Frederic goes out
of the hospital where Catherine and the baby have just died, it is raining.
“It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the
hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain”41
With the death of Catherine dies also the last thing he still
believed in: love. 41Hemingway Ernest, A Farewell to Arms, Arrow Books, London, 2004, p.293.
82
Hemingway was a sincere author, who put as much of himself as
possible into his books and who used the characters to express what he
felt or thought. Indeed, A Farewell to Arms refers to his war experience,
and the protagonist, Frederic, is in many ways similar to the author
himself. For example, they share the passion for boxing.
“I went to a gymnasium in the arcade to box for exercise”42
It is interesting the dialogue between Frederic and his friend
Rinaldi, who came to visit him in hospital after he was wounded.
“-And good news. You will be decorated. They want to get you the medaglia
d’argento but perhaps they can get only the bronze. What for? Because you are
gravely wounded. They say if you can prove you did anything heroic you can get the
silver. Otherwise, it will be the bronze. Tell me exactly what happened. Did you do
any heroic act?- No- I said. -I was blown up while we were eating cheese.-”43
Who is killed or wounded in war is considered a hero, even if, as
in this case, he hasn’t done anything heroic. On the other hand, those
who returned from the war, weren’t treated as heroes, with respect and
dignity, but rather as outcasts, worthless people. This would eventually
led to devastating consequences both at individual and social level.
42Ivi p.275. 43Ivi p.58-59.
83
2.3 Robert Graves
Graves was born on July 28th 1895, in Wimbledon, near London.
Graves’s education began in his parents’ excellent library. His formal
education included attendance at Charterhouse and at Oxford University.
As an officer in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Graves was seriously
wounded in France during WWI. He has been married twice and had
eight children. He lived most of his life since 1929 in Majorca, except
when lecturing or when political upheavals required evacuation of
British citizens. His early poems were published during World War I:
Over the Brazier (1916), Goliath and David (1916) and Fairies and
Fusiliers (1917). The horror of trench warfare had a profound effect
upon his poetry. In 1929, he published his autobiography Goodbye to all
that , one of the best descriptions of trench warfare to come out of World
War I. In 1934 he published I, Claudius , a fictionalized version of the
Emperor Claudius’s life. Thanks to this novel, he won the James Tait
Black Memorial Prize. In 1939 he published Collected poems and in
1943 The Reader Over Your Shoulder , a manual on English prose.
Graves’ interest in ancient myth led to the writing of The White Goddess
in 1948. During the 60s, he taught at Oxford and held lectures in the
United States. Back in Majorca, he died at the age of 90, in 1985.
84
2.3.1 Goodbye to all that
Plot
Goodbye to all that is an account of his life, including his
experience of war, until 1929, when he published it, at the age of 35.
When Robert Graves was born, his father was forty-nine and his mother
forty. His father was away most of the time and his mother was busy
with the household and the social obligations as wife of a public official.
Therefore, the nurses took care of Robert and his nine brothers and
sisters. Robert was a fervent evangelical Anglican until he was sixteen.
He endured six different preparatory schools, accumulating unpleasant
memories in each. During holidays, they used to visit their grandfather or
other relatives in Germany. Later, his German connections will be an
embarrassment to him. Graves became friend with the poet Siegfried
Sassoon. When World War I started, he joined the Royal Welsh
Fusiliers. In 1916 bursting shells seriously wounded him. He lay in a
coma for twenty-four hours. When his commanding officer saw him,
gave him up for dead and sent a letter of condolence to his mother.
Finally, he woke up. The wounds healed soon and once recovered he
returned to war. In January 1918, he married Nancy Nicholson, a
vehement feminist. They had four children. Their marriage was an
unhappy one. They moved to Egypt, where Graves taught English
85
literature at the University of Cairo. Robert and Nancy divorced on May
6th 1929 and she took the children with her. Profoundly shaken for what
had happened, he decided to radically change his life and forget his past.
“So I went abroad, resolved never to make England my home again; which
explains the 'Goodbye to All That' of this title”44
Analysis
The style is schematic and the language simple. Graves started
writing his autobiography, partly because he needed money badly, partly
to exorcise his painful past. Goodbye to all that marked an emotional
watershed:
“A story of what I was, not I am. An opportunity for a formal goodbye to you
and to you and to you and to me and to all that; forgetfulness, because once all of
this has been settled in my mind and written down and published it need never be
thought about again”.
Graves talks about his war experience, one year after the
publication in Germany of Im Westen nichts Neues by Erich Maria
Remarque. Even though in Remarque’s work war is seen from the
defeated side whereas in Grave’s work from the winning side, both
44Graves Robert, Goodbye to all that, Modern Classics, London, 2000, p.269
86
believe it is a senseless mass killing, caused by the stupidity and
selfishness of the “adults”.
“War continuance seemed merely a sacrifice of the idealistic younger
generation to the stupidity and self-protective alarm of the elder.”
Adding:
“War should be a sport for men above forty-five only, the Jesse's, not the
David's. Well, dear father, how proud I am of you serving your country as a very
gallant gentleman prepared to make even the supreme sacrifice. I only wish I were
your age: how willingly would I buckle on my armour and fight those unspeakable
Philistines! As it is, of course, I can’t be spared; I have to stay behind at the War
Office and administrate for you lucky old men. What sacrifices I have made!”
Graves also explains why the Triple Entente couldn’t win the war
after three years of conflict having a larger army and better weapons:
there was very little cooperation between the English and the French.
“I find it very difficult to like the French here, I have not met a single case of
the hospitality that one meets among the peasants of other countries. It is worse than
inhospitality here, for after all we are fighting for their dirty little lives”.
The Versailles treaty was meant to stop future wars, but, according
to Graves, it clearly contained the germs of a future war.
“The Treaty of Versailles shocked me; it seemed destined to cause another
war someday, yet nobody cared”.
87
3. German literature
It is, once again, interesting to analyse how the historic situation in
Germany has influenced the literature of this time. Erich Maria
Remarque’s Im Westen nichts Neues , first published in 1929, quickly
established itself as the novel of the First World War because of its
remarkable success in capturing the physical horror of trench warfare
and its psychological traumas in a blend of narrative and description that
achieves vivid realism without lapsing into sentiment or indulging in an
excess of authentic detail. This new kind of literature, often referred to as
"Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity) is characterized by the refusal of
pathos and feelings, and by the return to objectivity, sobriety and
rationality. It can be seen as the “literature of resignation or defeat
because of the defeat of the First World War and the economic crises
which followed, but also as literature of disillusionment , as it is the
revelation of the fragility of the values, such as heroism, sacrifice and
patriotism, for which soldiers decided to join World War I. The main
figure is the kleine Alltagsmensch (little man of everyday life),
characterized by the futility of his monotonous existence. He is
destroyed, hungry, jobless and afraid of the world around him. The titles
of the works are now documentary and journalistic.
88
3.1 Bertolt Brecht
Brecht was born on February 10th 1898, in Augsburg. He studied
medicine and natural science in Munich. Therefore, when the First
World War broke out, he spent his military service as a medical orderly.
He soon became a radical opponent of war and the nationalistic attitudes
associated with it. Even though he had studied medicine at the
university, he developed a profound interest in literature. He wrote his
first play Baal in 1918 and in the same period he wrote Legende vom
Toten Soldaten (The Legend of the Dead Soldier), one of Brecht’s most
famous ballads. Trommeln in der Nacht (Drums in the Night) was the
second play he wrote, and was completed in 1922. Thank to it, he was
awarded the Kleist Prize. A new phase in his development began with
his study of the dialectical materialism of Marx. The climax of this
decade occurs in his operas Mann ist Mann (Man Equals Man),
produced in 1926, which explored the themes of war and human identity,
and Die Dreigroschenoper (The Three-penny Opera), a musical that
was premiered under collaboration between Brecht, Kurt Weill and
Caspar Neher, in 1928, and which was really successful. In 1929 he
married Helene Weigel. In 1933, the year of the Reichstag Fire, Brecht
was forced into exile, fleeing first to Scandinavia and later to the United
States. During the fourteen years of exile, he became a prolific political
89
writer. He wrote Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder (Mother Courage and
Her Children) in 1939, which is considered by some to be the greatest
play of the 20th century, Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui (The
Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui) in 1941 and Leben des Galilei (Life of
Galileo) in 1947, that deals with the latter period of Galileo Galilei’s life.
In 1948, he reached East Berlin from Czechoslovakia and in 1949
founded the Berliner Ensemble , which will become one of the most
important theatre company of the country. Brecht died of heart attack in
1956, at the age of 58.
3.1.1 Legende vom Toten Soldaten
Plot
The story talks about a soldier who, having already died a “hero's
death”, is exhumed, declared “fit for duty” and sent back to the front.
Analysis
The poem is composed of 19 stanzas, with four verses each and
with an irregular rhyme scheme. The language is simple and sometimes
popular. The work is impersonal and there is no specific protagonist. It
was written in 1918, when the imperial General Ludendorff combed
through Germany in search for human material for his great offensive.
90
Seventeen-year-old boys and fifty-year-old men were put in uniform and
herded to the front. Brecht thought he might even dig out the dead for
service in war. He criticizes the abstract and ephemeral military values,
such as the hero who dies for his country, seen by the author as a
senseless and futile death. The author reveals the truth without veils and
illusions. War is something terrible, not only because people die, but also
because they lose their identity, their humanity and become a number, an
object, and there is no dignity and respect even after death.
3.1.2 Trommeln in der Nacht
Plot Trommeln in der Nacht , divided into five acts, tells the story of
Andree Kragler, declared missing in action in the trenches of World War
I and therefore, forgotten by his girlfriend Anna. However, he is actually
alive, and when he comes back in Berlin he discovers that in his absence,
Anna has agreed to marry a man who became rich dealing in the black
market during the war. It is the typical marriage of convenience wanted
by the parents. This ‘anti-romantic’ love story is set against the
Spartacist uprising of 1919. At first Andree joins the insurgents, but
then, when he understands that by being with them his life is in danger,
he changes his mind:
91
(Every man is best in his own skin)46.
The only thing he really wants is to survive. Eventually Anna
leaves Murk and her parents and goes out to find Andree. In the final
scene they are re-united.
Analysis
Trommeln in der Nacht was an immediate success when first
performed in 1922, and went on to play all over Germany.
Brecht’s language is built upon a certain bold and direct
simplicity. The words are of no greater importance, what matters is the
message they convey. The main theme of this work is “survival”. When
the War broke out, there was a tremendous enthusiasm. People flocked
to join the army. However, once they experienced the war, they soon
began to place their survival before anything else. When Andree Klager
returns home he initially wants to join the riotous but then he gives up
because his survival is more important than opposing to the Government
and protesting for unemployment and widespread poverty.

92
3.2 Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Maria Remarque was born on June 22nd 1898, in the
German city of Osnabrück. His real name was actually Erich Paul
Remark, but he changed it in homage to his mother Anna Maria. When
the Great War broke out he was called up. He was seriously wounded
and was repatriated to an army hospital in Germany where he spent the
rest of the war. While recovering, Remarque worked on Die Traumbude
(The Dream Room), his first novel, which was published in 1920. After
the war he worked as a press reader, teacher, salesman, and racing
driver, among other professions. In 1929 he published Im Westen nichts
Neues (All quiet on the Western Front), thank to which he achieved
instant success. Further novels include Der Weg zurück (The Road
Back) of 1931 and Drei Kameraden (Three Comrades) of 1938, which
talk about the events immediately after WWI. Remarque left Germany in
1929 and lived for a while in Ancona. The Nazis publicly burnt his
books in 1933. Six years later, he settled in NY. Remarque’s novel
Liebe deinen Nächsten (Love Thy Neighbour) of 1941, depicted the
plight of refugees trying to establish themselves in a reluctant host
country. Remarque acquired US citizenship and achieved a second great
success with the American best seller Arc de Triomphe (Arch of
Triumph) of 1946. The novel Zeit zu leben and Zeit zu sterben (in
93
English was translated as Time to love and time to die even if leben
means to live) of 1954, dealt with WW2. In 1958, he married the film
star Paulette Goddard. Finally, in the year 1971, he published his last
work Schatten im Paradies (Shadows in Paradise). Remarque returned
to Switzerland, where he died, on September 25th 1970.
3.2.1 Im Westen nichts Neues
Plot
“This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession. It is simply the
attempt to tell of a generation that was destroyed by the war.”47
This the comment of Graves on the book. The protagonist of the
novel is Paul Bäumer. He and some of his friends from school join the
army voluntarily after listening to the stirring patriotic speeches of their
teachers. However, after experiencing the unimaginable brutality of life
on the front, they soon realize that the truth about war is really different
from what propaganda used to say. It has nothing to do with glory and
honour; the ideals of nationalism and patriotism, for which they enlisted,
are simply empty clichés.

Paul receives seventeen days of leave and goes home. Paul feels
awkward and oppressed in his hometown, unable to discuss his traumatic
experiences with anyone, with the exception of his dying mother. The
only thing soldiers want, is to remain alive until the next day or the next

priority. The only moment in which Paul seems to regain his

“humanity” is when, during a battle, he is forced to hide in a shell hole.
A French soldier jumps into it with him, and Paul instinctively stabs him.
As the man dies Paul is overcome with remorse. He feels that this enemy
soldier is no enemy at all, but rather a victim of war just like himself.
Meanwhile, Paul’s friends are killed in combat one by one. In the end,
on October 1918, on a day with very little fighting, so much so that the
army report for that day reads: “All quiet on the Western Front” , Paul
is killed.
Analysis
This novel belongs to the Neue Sachlichkeit, aimed at creating a
realistic portrayal of the reality. Remarque didn't want to paint a picture
of illustrious heroes. He wanted to show what it was really like for so
many soldiers, through a simple and direct language. The Great War is
seen through the eyes of the defeated. A generation of young men,
devastated by war. In this part of the novel, Paul says that his generation
was betrayed by the adults and that, when the war ends, he will be
ruined, for all he knows is war.
Was soll danach noch geschehen? Und was soll aus uns
werden?”52
(I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair,
death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. I see how
peoples are set against one another, and in silence, unknowingly, foolishly,
obediently, innocently slay one another. I see the best brains in the world inventing
weapons and words to make the whole process that much more sophisticated and
long-lasting. And watching this with me are all my contemporaries, here and on the
other side, all over the world – my whole generation is experiencing this with me.
What would our fathers do it one day we rose up and confronted them, and called
them to account? What do they expect from us when a time comes in which there is
no more war? For years our occupation has been killing – that was the first
experience we had. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. What will happen
afterwards? And what can possibly become of us?)53

3.3 Hans Fallada
Hans Fallada, pseudonym of Rudolf Ditzen, was born on July 21st
1893 in Berlin. In 1911, he attempted suicide and was interned in a
psychiatric clinic in Jena. Fallada had a very difficult time in school and
so decided to leave high school without even the diploma. He worked as
farmer, and became a journalist before settling in as a writer. During this
period, he also struggled with morphine addiction, and the death of his
younger brother in the First World War. He began with Der Junge
Goldeschall (Young Goedeschal), but his first success came with
Bauern, Bonzen und Bomben (Peasants, Bosses and Bombs), published
in 1931, a rambling and yet accurate account of a farmer’s revolt.
Fallada became instantly famous with Kleiner Mann was nun? (Little
Man, What Now?) dated 1932, a moving and at the same time
sentimental account of the struggles of a young couple to survive during
the harsh years of unemployment and frustration after WWI. In 1933,
when the Nazis went to the power, he left Germany and moved to
Carwitz, Meclemburg. He became a very prolific writer during this
period. He wrote Wolf unter Wolfen (Wolf Among Wolves) (1937), a
tragic account of the battle of survival in post-1918 Germany, Damals
bei uns daheim (The way Things were at Home)(1942) and Heute bei
uns zu Hause (The way things are Now) (1943). In 1944, he composed,
98
in two frenetic weeks, his final testimony to his losing battle with
alcoholism and Der Trinker (The Drinker) which was published
posthumously. Jeder stirbt für sich allein (Every Man Dies Alone) was
again written at breakneck speed a few months before his death, and it
was defined by Primo Levi as: “One of the best books on the German
resistance against Nazism”. In 1947, he died from an overdose
of morphine, in Berlin.
3.3.1 Kleiner Mann, Was Nun?
Plot The protagonists Johannes Pinneberg and Emma Mörschel (who
he calls Lämmchen, which means "little lamb") discover they are
expecting a baby. They decide to get married without involving their
parents, and go living in Ducherow, where Pinneberg works as
bookkeeper. The owner of the firm, which had hoped to marry Pinneberg
with his daughter Maria, fires him as soon as he finds out he is already
engaged with another woman. The two young lovers have no choice but
to move to Berlin, where Pinneberg’s mother lives. Thanks to his
mother’s boyfriend Hans, he finds a job as clerk in a clothing shop. The
pay is meagre. When the couple finds out Pinneberg’s mother is a
nightclub hostess, they decide to go away. The months while they’re
99
waiting for the child’ birth pass through a thousand of economic
difficulties.
(Oh why, oh why,' thought Lammchen, 'don't we have just a little bit more
money? If only we didn't have to watch the pennies so! It would all be so simple, life
would look so different.)
One day Pinneberg is fired, without notice. From that moment on,
the young couple has to rely only on a meagre unemployment benefit. It
begins a long struggle for life in the increasingly hostile Berlin where the
Nazis are becoming numerous and violent.
Analysis
Fallada's style is blunt, forcefully plain, and determinedly non-
literary. The book was an immediate success in Germany and abroad,
forty-eight thousand copies were sold only in one year and it was
translated in numerous languages. It portrays the German society during
the 30's, characterized by unemployment, job insecurity and
hyperinflation. The title Kleiner Mann, Was Nun? refers to Pinneberg
who is a "little man", an "ordinary man". Emma (Lämmchen) is the
100
strongest and most courageous of the two and she always supports her
husband.
(Pinneberg wasn't hard. He was soft. When they squeezed him he went to
pieces, turned to porridge)
Fallada shows a world in crisis, devastated by degradation,
poverty and unemployment, where people feel frustrated, disillusioned
and empty. During times like that, dictators emerge as powerful and
confident leaders offering to provide fellow citizens with guidance and
direction. The shocking thing is that the author talks about an historic
period, which is really similar to the current one.
101
Conclusions
How can war, a phenomenon of destruction, give rise to literature,
an act of creation? Yet, war is a recurring theme in literature, which has
been explored since ancient times.
The First World War has been the price paid by the generation of
the young for the lack of wisdom of the older ones. It has been a terrible
price and the tragedy is, that even after having paid this price, they didn’t
obtain a long-lasting peace, instead, after only twenty-one years, there
has been another World War, that was even more devastating and led to
more misery, desperation and death.
The texts I have analysed show the different impacts of war on
those who experienced it, whether as soldiers or civilians, winners or
defeated. The thing all of them share is their view of war as something
horrible, which had forever changed their lives.
However, mankind does not learn from its mistakes and continue
to walk on the same road which has already led to the disaster.

Ersten Weltkrieg, waren enorm. Der Erste Weltkrieg forderte rund
17 Millionen Tote und 20 Millionen Verwundete. Auch die materiellen
Schäden waren ungeheuer. Wohnungen und Gebäude waren zerstört. Die
politische Landschaft Europas hatte sich völlig gewandelt: Neue Staaten
entstanden, Grenzen wurden neu gezeichnet. Die politischen Krisen und
Unsicherheiten wurden durch die schwierige wirtschaftliche
Lageverschärft. Not, Armut und Arbeitslosigkeit kennzeichnen diese
Jahre.
boten Sicherheit an.
107
der New Yorker Börse (Wall Street Crash) begann die
Weltwirtschaftskrise.

of consciousness).
Dalloway von Virginia Woolf, A Farewell to Arms von Ernest
Hemingway und Goodbye to all that von Robert Graves.
2.1 Virginia Woolf
Group. Sie heiratete Leonard Woolf am 10. August 1913 und im selben
Jahr erschien ihr erstes Buch The Voyage out (Die Fahrt hinaus). Im Juli
110
litt sie unter schweren Depressionen. Im April 1925 erschien ihre Essay-
Sammlung The Common Reader (Der gewöhnliche Leser), im Mai ihr
Roman Mrs. Dalloway. Im Mai 1927 erschien To the Lighthouse (Die
Fahrt zum Leuchtturm), im Oktober Orlando. 1929 veröffentlichte sie A
Room Of One's Own (Ein Zimmer für sich allein), ein feministisches
Essay. Der Roman The Waves (Die Wellen) erschien im Oktober 1931.
Woolfs gesundheitlicher Zustand verschlechterte sich immer mehr. 1941,
krieg traumatisierte alter ego Mrs. Dalloways.
112
2.2 Ernest Hemingway
Kurowsky. 1925 veröffentlichte er In Our Times (In unserer Zeit). Erster
literarischer Erfolg kam mit dem Roman The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta).
Der antimilitaristische Roman A Farewell to Arms (In einem andern
Land) erschien im Jahr 1928. Depressionen und Alkoholkonsum
begleiteten ihn die meiste Zeit seines Lebens. 1935 und 1936 erschienen
Green Hills of Africa (Die Grünen Hügel Afrikas) und The Snow of
Pulitzer-Preis für seine Novelle The Old Man and the Sea (Der alte
Therapie. Hemingway starb am 2. Juli 1961.
2.2.1 A Farewell to Arms
Handlung
114
2.3 Robert Graves
Robert Graves wurde am 24. Juli 1895 in Wimbledon, London
geboren.
1916 und 1917 erschienen Over the Brazier (Über der Feuerschale),
Goliath and David, und Fairies and Fusiliers (Feen und Fusiliere).
Autobiographie Good-bye to All That (in Deutschland erschien sie unter
dem Titel: Strich drunter), außerdem 1934 I Claudius (Ich, Claudius).
mythologischen Themen wie The Greek Myths (Griechische Mythologie)
und The White Goddess (Die weiße Göttin).
Am 7. Dezember 1985starb Graves im Alter von 90 Jahren in
Deià.
115
2.3.1 Goodbye to all that
Titel Goodbye to all that stärker mit als im deutschen Strich drunter.
Expressionismus, sondern journalistisch, dokumentarisch.
3.1 Bertolt Brecht
Bertolt Brecht wurde am 10. Februar 1898 in Augsburg geboren.
August 1956 starb Bertolt Brecht
an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts.
3.1.1 Legende vom toten Soldaten
Handlung
geschickt.
verloben. Von ihm erwartet sie ein Kind. Zur gleichen Zeit brechen in
der Stadt soziale Unruhen aus. Andree nimmt nicht an der
Spartakusrevolution teil, weil er überleben will. Am Ende verstehen
119
Kammerspiele in München uraufgeführt. Dafür bekam er den
Kleistpreis.
millionenfach verkauft.
Falladas Rauschgift-
und Morphiumsucht begann etwa 1916. Der erste Roman Der junge
Goedeschal erschien 1920. 1931 erschien der Roman Bauern, Bonzen
und Bomben. Der Roman Kleiner Mann, was nun? (1932) beschert
Fallada Weltruhm. Andere wichtigste Romane sind Wolf unter Wölfen
(1937), Damals bei uns daheim (1942), Heute bei uns zu Hause (1943),
und Jeder stirbt für sich allein (1948). Fallada starb am 5. Februar 1947
allein in einem Klinikzimmer in Berlin-Niederschönhausen.
3.3.1 Kleiner Mann, was nun? Handlung
Leute freudig an. Johannes erhält eine Stelle als Verkäufer im
Warenhaus Mandel.
Welt.
