Dear Parents,

This Summary of Learning is a snap shot of where your child is at this point in time on his or her continuum of learning.

What the Descriptors mean:

In our classrooms we talk about whether you can do something with direct support, guided support or independently. The purpose behind this teaching is that everyone is learning and we are aiming to help the children reflect on their progress as learners. This ownership of their learning helps them think about what they can do next to improve, and celebrates their progress.

Direct support:“I can do it with an adult helping me the whole time” An adult provides step-by-step assistance. The child will benefit from regular practice and support at home. Provide assistance as needed to avoid frustration. Sharing the task will build confidence.

Guided support:“I can do some of it myself but I need some help from an adult.”An adult checks in to see how the child is progressing and provides help as needed.At home, encourage your child to try things on their own first; assist as needed to avoid frustration.

Independently:“I can do it all by myself! I am confident!”Child may be able to help other students because of his/her mastery of the activity. At home, encourage your child to take on a challenge and find ways to help them use their mastery of this activity.
