VId.Personal sharings of V.Uma – The Impact of FellowshipI am glad to inform that with the fellowship amount given to me I’m able to create my friend Mr.Muthuram as full time social worker.  50% of my contribution goes to him, which support him for his financial commitments.

Asha’s moral support (words of D.P. like “Dream in the very big level Uma, we are here to support U”) we were able to gain much confidence, which helped us to change worst condition of   our Siragu into a better position with the help of Personal loans.A small drop of our contribution to the society was reconigised by many good hearts in the World because of ASHA.Able to meet great people like Shri.Sandeep Bhai and his wife so many other young and enthusiastic volunteers like Neelkamal, Guddu, Mahesh, Keshav, and Manish etc, who think for poorest of poor for round the clock. I personally learnt many good things from Asha volunteers.

After the fire accident, which occurred in our Project Siragu in 2004, my academic research work got affected due to various struggles to restart the project from the zero point. Asha fellow ship helped me to curb the worries and I am able to continue my studies forever with great new zeal.

One personal incident, I would like to share among all is that, till today I was not able to do anything for my family.   Especially my mother who gave moral support to continue with my ambition to serve the society.  At present she is helping and sharing the 48 years of teaching experience at Siragu and working hard 8hrs/day at age of 65 after completing her family commitment.

First time I am able to celebrate my father’s 70 th birthday and function is conducted “Beema Radha Shanthi” marriage in the great way with help small amount of money. The money I spent for this noble occasion to keep my parents happy was possible through the fellowship amount. I had mentioned to my mother in my 12th Standard in 1992 that, “I born for the society not for our family.  I would like devoting my entire life to service”. My family did not welcome this ambitious statement. After 7 years of hard work in establishing Suyam, able to even pull my mother into to the field of social work and now she takes care of project SIRAGU.

I am becoming stronger and stronger without any financial worries and love to live within the means. With strong foundation of dedication I am able to construct second innings of my social life in a very different angle.  I personally thank Siddhamma to introduce great people like you. She guided me to reach D.P. I was very much hesitant to get this fellowship. I thought service is my duty & Breathe.

Why I should get fellowship for my very little drop contribution to our mother earth.Siddhamma gave me an idea that you can convert this fellowship into 24hrs service.

I was able to prove that into reality. Now we working very hard for this one year to create pioneer trust who give profitable business to create more social contributors than only basic element of the society.

In the World, no one’s effort is going to be wasted and it gets transformed into other forms. Like wise this fellowship transformed into foundation for creative work of Suyam.

VIe.VAN money supported by Asha and its support in AKKARAIPETTAIWe are thankful to the Asha team for considering our proposal and extended support towards purchase of Van.  An amount of Rs.120000.00 received from Asha and Suyam spent an amount of Rs.80000.00 towards Van cost and preliminary expenses. Now, Van run by two dedicated staff members Mr.Vahab and Cleaner Riaz.Van make daily trips from temporary shelters to Akkaraipettai and accommodate 100 children aged 3 years to 8 years, each day in two trips in the morning and two trips in the evening.

A FlashbackWhen there is a issue raised in Akkaraipettai, most of the parents insisted the panchyat union elementary school to issue transfer certificate so that they can enroll their children in the nearest schools near to temporary shelters.   When the headmaster of the school asked us to find a solution to this problem, then Suyam

Conducted a parent teacher meeting and District Collector of Nagai presided over the program and program aimed at counseling the parents not to take TC and given them a hope that their temporary problems will be taken care of.

From Government side special bus was arranged to accommodate school children to reach the schools.  But duration of bus and heavy crowd which forced to neglect the smaller children.

Response from Children

* As children were impressed on system adopted in the center, they expect the same thing in the school but when they feel that is missing, they back to center. They even are asking us to get special permission from the school, so that they can attend the center regularly.

Our Observation Ms.Jeya – Incharge, Activity Center, Nagapattinam Ms.Jeya was working as a PTA teacher in PUES, Akkaraipettai and left the school before tsunami. Her husband died in tsunami disaster. Her Observation about Children

Children are eager to learn things and they mostly like to access Computer and computer related games and other CDs kept over there.

Different books, coloring books, head phone facility to listen individually, drawing practice, play ground materials, exercise equipments are the main attractive and most likely things for the children. Hence, children were very much attentive to hear the teacher patiently.

Responses from the community where these centers are running in terms of parent understanding, support, etc.

Observation from Discussion with Parents

Parents hesitate to send the children to school as they involved in the fishing activity and they were happy that children are safe at home and not outside. These type of parents were literally changed their mentality after they had visited to the center and had seen the activities performed for the children.

General opinion from them is, if they send the children only to the center after some time they can join directly in higher class in regular school. Hence, they request us to reunite the children to the school and also allow them to attend the activity center.

The parents were happy that their children not wasting their time, roaming on the roads but spend their time usefully in the center.

TRP-2 - Teacher Support ProgramPROJECT : APPOINTMENT OF ACTING TEACHERSPLACE : 50 TSUNAMI AFFECTED SCHOOLSBENEFICIARY : TSUNAMI AFFECTED SCHOOL CHILDREN PERIOD OF PROJECT : ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF APPROVAL OF FUNDS

Project ExplanationWe are involved in tsunami relief and rehabilitation activities from the day of tsunami struck coastal areas and carry out many educational activities from the beginning. One of our activity is to train the teachers to train the children to create awareness among the children about tsunami and with main aim to bring out stress and trauma of children affected by tsunami.

We being successful in this operation and almost teachers of 85 schools have been training and the training materials for children also issued and more than 15000 students are benefited about this program.

While carry out our activities and further visit to schools for feedback, we came to know that many teachers took voluntary transfer to other places after tsunami and due to this most of the schools affected with shortage of teachers. This result in dumping of much crowd in one class and single teacher need to manage minimum of 100 children at a time and lead to more stress and discourage the efforts of teacher to educate the children.
