Samples of black semisolid material were received firom Environmeiital Strategies, LLC in good condition. The internal temperatures of the shipment containers were as follows:
Samples received Date:
6/26/05 Temperature °C 15.2
Internal chain of custody procedures were followed after sample receipt. Samples were stored in a locked refrigerator. A sample custody logbook contains the record of sample removal firom the secure sample storage area to the sample preparation laboratory. The custody record for the sample extracts is present on the sample extraction logbook page.
The disposal of samples and extracts will be authorized 1 month after the release of this data report. Sample disposal will be documented.

Methods
The samples varied in their properties from free-flowing organic liquids to black semisolid material apparently high in organic content. All samples were treated as organic liquids and prepared by waste dilution with methylene chloride (DCM) using EPA Method 3580.
The sample diluents were spiked v^th surrogate compounds and analyzed by GC/FID (EPA Method 8100M; META SOP No. MET4007) and by GC/MS (EPA Method 8270M; META SOP No. 4008).
A portion of each sample was placed in clean glass jars and sent to Galbraith Laboratories in Knoxville TN for specific gravity (ASTM D1963) and Ultimate and Proximate Analysis (ASTM D3l76mod/ASTM D5142).
Another portion of each sample was placed in clean glass jars and sent to Dr. James Hower and the Center for Applied Energy Research at the University of Kentucky for petrographic analysis using light microscopy.
Results
Sample results were presented in summary forms (CLP Form 1 equivalent) which follow this narrative.
Quality Control
Analyte Flags The reporting limits were determined as the sample equivalent of the lowest linear initial calibration standard. Analytes measured between one half of the lowest standard and the lowest standard were reported as "estimated" and flagged with the letter "J." No value was reported above the calibration range. Undetected analytes were flagged with the letter, "U."
Holding Times The samples were received in two batches. The first batch contained 6 samples of black semisolid material from the Monongahela River received on June 29,2005. Those samples were prepared for GC/FID fingerprint and extended PAH profiles by GC/MS within 14 days of collection. The extracts were analyzed within 40 days of preparation.
There are no holding times for the physical properties tests or the petrographic analysis. 08/27/05 Page 4 KR050629 laboratory report
M E T A J ) ^ AR120002
The second set of samples consisted of crude coal tar and refined tar products received by META in February 2003 from Reilly Industries, Inc. Those samples were stored in secured refirigerators at 4 *'C imtil removed for analysis on 8/2/05.
Blanks Low concentrations of some PAHs were detected in the method blanks. However, the concentrations in the blanks were several orders of magnitude lovver than the native sample concentrations and do not affect the restilts.
Internal Standards All samples were spiked with internal standards prior to instrumental analysis. All internal standard areas met QC criteria.
Surrogate Spikes All samples were spiked with surrogate compoimds toluene-d8, phenanthrene-dlO, and perylene-dl2. When detectable, the surrogate spikes met QC criteria with few exceptions.
Matrix Spikes Due to the very high concentrations of PAHs in the samples, matrix spike samples were not prepared.
