The Old Barn with the Butte by April Oedekoven, Rapid City “The old barn with the butte always reminds me of home and coming home. On the bus, I would pass by it on my trek home from school. Every time I would look behind to catch Bear Butte rising behind the old barn. Some days it was beautiful, some days it was magnificent, and other days it was downright gorgeous. Every day produced something unique and different. On this day, the old barn and Bear Butte have a mysterious look. The thick cloud bank is hiding Bear Butte, giving it an eerie glow.”1st Place/Category: Home

For seven days in October, SDPB invited photographers in the state to photograph where they work, live, and play throughout South Dakota. The response was terrific – SDPB received almost 1,000 entries, including nearly 300 images from South Dakota’s under-18 set of emerging young visual artists.

Youth and adult winners received cash prizes and their photos are published in the 2016 Picture South Dakota calendar – available during SDPB-TV’s Fall Member Week Drive, Tuesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 6. Watch SDPB-TV for more details.

Youth category winners are pictured on p. 12.To view all contest entries, visit http://www.SDPB.org/photocontest/

Thanks to you and your fellow members, we are pleased to report that South Dakota Public Broadcasting had another successful year. The following pages are a tribute to our donors – the members of the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

Whether you are a Visionary Society Member or you give $5 a month – you are the backbone of everything that happens at SDPB. While the State of South Dakota and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting do provide generous financial support, the most important dollars SDPB receives each year are from you – the members of Friends of SDPB. Your dollars go directly to support the program options you see and hear on SDPB Radio, TV and Online. You are the margin of excellence that makes SDPB truly great.

In Fiscal Year 2015 (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015) SDPB had their best fundraising year to date with just under $3 million dollars raised from over 150 corporations and 11,006 families who chose to support SDPB.

Because of your involvement, the Friends of SDPB was able to: • Transfer $1,373,579 to the SDPB Network for programming costs. • Substantially grow the SDPB Endowment with additions of $610,749. • Assist the SDPB Network with the financing for the new SDPB Mobile Video Production Vehicle.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything in this Friends of SDPB year in review, I invite you to reach out to our Friends CEO, Ryan Howlett at (605) 367-7266 or [email protected].

Thank you for all of your support. SDPB is stronger because you cared enough to become involved. Dan LeikvoldPresident, Friends of SDPB Board of Directors

As 2015 comes to a close, SDPB takes this opportunity to not only reflect back on a year of programming and services, but also to thank you – our donors, partners, and admirers – for your support in helping to create another year in which SDPB was able to share the talents and voices of those who might otherwise go unknown and unheard.

Here’s how you helped South Dakotans learn, dream and grow throughout 2015.

SDPB Television

SDPB Television reached two all-time highs this year: we aired our highest number of hours of local content and achieved a record number of broadcast partnerships in 2015.

Throughout the year, videographers, producers and engineers in SDPB’s television department created original, South Dakota-focused programming that simply can’t be found anywhere else. SDPB broadcasted over 900 hours of local programming to serve the informational, educational, and quality entertainment needs of South Dakotans. In addition to showcasing events, people, and public affairs from around the state on the newsmagazine Dakota Life and SD FOCUS, SDPB chronicled the surprisingly scandalous history of establishing county seats and erecting courthouses in the documentary Temples of Justice, which garnered a Midwest Emmy nomination. SDPB also produced Black Hills Metamorphosis, the second of two documentaries that closely examine the pine beetle epidemic presently devastating parts of the Black Hills.

Relationship-building is essential to SDPB’s mission and endurance as a public media organization by and for South Dakotans. To pool talent and maximize resources in the creation of homegrown programming, SDPB established new working partnerships with area experts and local entities such as the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks to produce Black Hills Metamorphosis and partnered with South Dakota High School Activities Association to broadcast South Dakota High School All-State fine arts and championship sports events. Working with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, SDPB live-broadcasted the Governor’s Agriculture Summit and also strengthened our partnership with the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

This fall, SDPB-TV received an award from the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) for Putting History to Work: The Economics of Historic Preservation, produced in partnership with the South Dakota State Historical Society. SDPB is also hitting the road with a new, high-definition Mobile Production Vehicle (MPV) that replaces the outdated Winnebago and will enable higher-quality and assurance capabilities for remote broadcasts like high school basketball championships and statehouse coverage from Pierre.

SDPB RadioLike their counterparts in television, the staff of SDPB

Radio worked throughout the year to provide quality news, public affairs and arts programming for South Dakotans via airwaves and internet. Hundreds of hours of local music – from the South Dakota and Black Hills symphonies to JazzFest in Sioux Falls to Spearfish “banjo babe” Jami Lynn – were recorded and aired. This summer Karl Gehrke took the helm of listener-favorite Jazz Nightly to put his own spin on contemporary and classic jazz music programming. Gehrke’s colleagues, News Director Cara Hetland and Radio Producer Steve Zwemke have donned multiple hats to share hosting duties of Dakota Midday until a new host is named.

SDPB Online and EducationSDPB’s Online and Education

department coordinated its second Picture South Dakota Photo Contest, culminating in almost 1,000 entries from around the state and country. The addition of a Youth Category had hundreds of South Dakota students uploading snapshots of their friends, families, and hometowns. “Science Steve” Rokusek enthused hundreds of students and teachers with his lively science demonstrations at events like the Lakota Nations Education Conference, It’s All About Science Festival, and Neutrino Day.

SDPB successfully launched its online archive project Images of the Past— a one-of-a-kind online assemblage of South Dakota images made available to the general public to support the production of historical films and other media. A redesign of the SDPB high school activities web pages and increased social media engagement for activities like wrestling and basketball demonstrate an ever-increasing supply and demand for online public media.

Friends of SDPBIn a year that saw the highest

fundraising number in Friends of SDPB history, Friends hosted over 400 Downton Abbey fans at eight tea-party screenings throughout the state and also put on a fun-filled fundraising jamboree at Fiddles and Friends, featuring Owen DeJong, Kenny Putnam, and Tom Schaefer.

SDPB in the CommunitySDPB attended family-oriented events that attracted tens of thousands of

attendees, including Youth and Family Services Kids Fair, Storybook Land’s Festival, and Outdoor Universities both west and east river. We sponsored fun events like the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the 605 Summer Classic, the Rock Garden Tour Fancy Country Barn Tour, the South Dakota Festival of Books, Made in South Dakota, and a live comedy performance from Paula Poundstone. We launched five targeted blogs that feature South Dakota’s latest happenings in News & Information, Children & Education, Science & Technology, Sports & Leisure and Arts & Culture. We also expanded our coverage of high school activities to include visual arts. We shared stories of service at special screenings of Last Days of Vietnam and Debt of Honor, and we broadcast and webcast singularly South Dakota stories – including Living Mount Rushmore, the Daschle Dialogues, the Al Neuharth Media Award, and Statehouse as well as complete coverage of all the legislative meetings and events from Pierre.

The time and talent of many individuals and organizations is behind the scenes of SDPB programs and services, but none may be as significant as the support of supporters like you.

Thank you for a great 2015 and here’s to a safe, prosperous new year.Owen DeJong, Kenny Putnam, Tom Schaefer play at the Fiddles & Friends event.

These graphs illustrate SDPB’s and Friends of SDPB’s 2015 Fiscal Years which ran from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. The graphs show how we were able to put your investment in SDPB to use to create great programming for you. We are proud to have earned your support. We appreciate our members and the support from the State of South Dakota.

Alaska’s Admiralty Island supports the world’s largest concentration of bears. Sustained by salmon streams, isolated and protected by their environment, some 1,700 Alaskan brown bears are part of a unique circle of life that has played out here for centuries. In August, millions of salmon return to spawn, providing a feast for the bears, eagles, orcas, and sea lions. This year, the salmon fail to arrive for the first time, and the bears get a bitter taste of what the future may hold. Get a rare glimpse of this fragile ecosystem on Nature Fortress of the Bears.SDPB1: Wednesday, Dec. 9, 7pm (6 MT)SDPB2: Sunday, Dec. 13, 7pm (6 MT)

SDPB is proud to announce Steven “Science Steve” Rokusek, SDPB Education Specialist, was awarded the 2015 SACCY Award from the South Dakota School Age Care Alliance (SDSACA) at their fall conference.

Established in 2000, the SACCY is awarded annually to one South Dakota individual or organization for distinguished service in the field of out-of-school time (OST). The recipient of the award, according to the SDSACA, “exemplifies dedication to, support of, and advocacy for school age care.”

Rokusek was recognized for “his knowledge, integrity, and dedication to the youth of South Dakota . . . passion for science and a talent to

SDPB’s “Science Steve” Named 2015 SACCY Award Winnerpresent lessons to youth that ignites their desire to learn more and do more.” The award singles out Science Steve’s engaging science demonstrations that “are above and beyond a typical conference session” and that “excite teachers” as well as children.

According to the nomination, “it is evident that Mr. Rokusek believes in quality programming for all youth in South Dakota and understands the best way to have quality programming is to have highly trained and qualified staff – just as the mission of SDSACA states –‘to promote quality Out-of-School Time programs for children and youth through professional development and public advocacy.’”

Steven Rokusek.

SDSACA is an affiliate organization of the National Afterschool Alliance, whose mission is to foster development, provide education, and encourage advocacy for the out-of-school-time community.

Eager to see representations of the state through the eyes of young South Dakotans, this year SDPB created a Youth Category for our Picture South Dakota Photo Contest. We received hundreds of touching images from youth of all ages who sent in photographs individually and via class projects organized by teachers and advisors.

We’re grateful to the aspiring young photographers and their mentors for capturing and sharing the places, people, and moments that are significant to their young lives in South Dakota. Thank you.

The winners are below. To view all contest entries in the Youth Category, please visit www.SDPB.org/photocontest/2015/youth/ .

Picturing South Dakota: Youth Category Winners

Peace and Tranquility by Shaylyn, Lemmon “This picture was taken at a local church. This picture really speaks to me because when I look at it a sense of calmness comes over me.”Winner/Category: People’s Choice

Junkyard Dog by Paige, Watertown“This is my sister’s dog Meaki. She is a Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix. I thought it would be cool to take pictures of her after I saw her jump up on one of the cars at my neighbor’s junkyard. I want to say it is about a good mile or so long property lined up with cars of all sorts.” 1st Place/Category: South Dakota

Old Broken Jars by Elizabeth, Viborg“While painting an old barn east of my farm house I came across many old jars. Most scattered on the outside of the barn. Gathering them up in my arms I envisioned how I would place them in order to shoot a still life picture. Running back to my house, I raced up the stairs to search for my camera. When I returned to where the jars were I noticed that several cats came to inspect what their human had done to the barn that was once filled with solitude. Then one decides knock over the one in front. I decided to keep it like that and place all the jars on an edge inside the barn with the one tipped over on its side.”1st Place/Category: Home

Soybean Harvest by Camden, Emery “Taken near Ethan, SD with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision PLUS.”1st Place/Category: Work

The Empty House by Tasha, Alexandria “I never knew my Great Aunt, but I wish I had. She died this summer and this was a property she owned.”1st Place/Category: Connections
