Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Before You Start

1 Before You Start

1.1 Version Requirements Before Upgrade

Table 1-1 Version requirements before upgrade

Version Upgrade Instruction

S2300, S3300, S5300: V100R002 and earlier versions

The command line of V100R005C01SPC100 is different from the command line of earlier versions. If V100R001 and V100R002 are directly upgraded to V100R005C01SPC100, configurations may be lost. To upgrade V100R001 and V100R002 directly, back up the configuration file first. After the upgrade, compare the new configuration file and the old one to check whether configurations are lost.

It is recommended that you upgrade the version to V100R003 first, and then to V100R005C01SPC100.

S2300, S3300, S5300: V100R003 This version can be upgraded directly to V100R005C01SPC100.

S2300, S3300, S5300: V100R005C00, V100R005C00SPC100, V100R005C01

This version can be upgraded directly to V100R005C01SPC100.

1.2 Impact of Patch InstallationBefore you upgrade an earlier version to the V100R005C01SPC100, read this chapter carefully to understand the possible impacts of the upgrade on the existing system.

Upgrade Guide

1.3 Impact on the System During Installation

Impact on Services

The switch will restart during the upgrade and service will be interrupted.

NOTE

The service interruption time depends on many factors, such as the system software size, upgrade method, operator's skill, and service configurations. The following service interruption time is for your reference:

In the following examples, the switches are not configured and they are not in any stack. In addition, all these switches can provide the PoE function.

If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded through the serial interface, the service interruption time is as follows (the baudrate is 115200):

S2300: 30 minutes

S3300: 37 minutes

S5300: 44 minutes

If the switches are upgraded by using the BootROM and the system software is uploaded through the network port (FTP mode), the service interruption time is as follows:

S2300: 4.5 minutes

S3300: 4.5 minutes

S5300: 5 minutes

If the switches are upgraded by using the command line, the service interruption time is as follows:

S2300: 2.5 minutes

S3300: 2.5 minutes

S5300: 2.5 minutes

Impact on Network Communication

When the system restarts, the communication between the switch and the NMS is interrupted. The communication interruption time is the same as the service interruption time.

1.3.2 Impact on the System After InstallationThere is no adverse impact on the system.

1.4 Cautionary Notes Before the UpgradeConsider the following cautionary points before performing the upgrade:

The BootROM must be upgraded.

The command lines of the V100R005C01SPC100 version are modified; therefore, after V100R001 or V100R002 is directly upgraded to V100R005C01SPC100, configurations may be lost. After the upgrade, check the configurations manually. It is recommended

Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Before You Start

that you upgrade the version to V100R003 first. The upgrade from V100R003 to V100R005C01SPC100 must be performed in the system view. For details on how to upgrade V100R001 or V100R002 to V100R003C00, see the following document:

The flash memory of the S3328/S3352/S2352 can store only one startup file; therefore, delete the current startup file before performing the upgrade. (If there are remaining files in the flash memory, delete them.) The startup file of V100R003 is delete-protected; therefore, you need to load the S23_33_53-V100R003SPH007 to remove the protection. Then you can delete the startup file. You can obtain the S23_33_53-V100R003SPH007.pat file from http://support.huawei.com/support/pages/editionctrl/catalog/ShowVersionDetail.do?actionFlag=getDetail&node=000001447555&colID=ROOTWEB|CO0000000065. After login, fill in the application form. You can download the file after your application is approved. The startup file of V100R005C01SPC100 is not protected, so you do not need to load the patch. The details on how to delete the startup file of V100R005C01SPC100 are described in 3.7 Checking the Flash Memory Space. For details on how to load the patch, see the release notes of the patch.

When you upgrade the software using the command line, stack upgrade, or USB flash drive, do not copy or delete files.

After the version is upgraded, ensure that the configuration is saved because a later version is compatible with early versions but an early version is incompatible with later versions. If the configuration is not saved, the configuration will be lost in the case of version rollback.

When the S2300/S3300/S5300 is upgraded from V100R003 to V100R005C01SPC100, change the DST after the upgrade is successful. If the version is rolled back after the DST is changed, the DST configuration may be lost or incorrect. In this case, you need to reconfigure the DST.

When the S2300/S3300/S5300 V100R005C01SPC100 is rolled back to V100R003, you need to re-set the system time.

When the S2300/S3300/S5300 V100R003 is started in the stack environment, the BootROM is not updated automatically. You must manually upgrade the BootROM. For details on how to upgrade the BootROM manually.

The command line of V100R005C01SPC100 is changed; therefore, compared with the configuration files of V100R003 and earlier versions, the configuration file of V100R005C01SPC100 is changed a lot. The configuration file of V100R005C01SPC100 must begin with the message like "!Software Version V100R005C01SPC100." Before loading the configuration file to V100R005C01SPC100, check whether the configuration file contains the preceding message. If not, the system processes the configuration file in the same way as a V100R003 configuration file. In this case, some configurations may not function properly.

In V100R005, IGMP snooping proxy and VLANIF interface cannot be configured in the same VLAN; however, V100R003 supports the IGMP snooping proxy and VLANIF interface in the same VLAN. If the IGMP snooping proxy and VLANIF interface are configured in the same VLAN in V100R003, the configuration will not be lost after the software is upgraded to V100R005. If you want to re-enable IGMP snooping proxy in the VLAN in V100R005, disable the IGMP snooping proxy, delete the VLANIF interface, and then enable the IGMP snooping proxy again.

When the S3300 is upgraded or rolled back to the V100R005C01SPC100, you must delete the startup file because the flash memory space is limited. If the S3300 is upgraded from the V100R005C01SPC100, the startup file is deleted in the same way as common files. If the S3300 is upgraded from the V100R003, you need to load the patch to remove protection of the startup file. Then you can delete the startup file in the same way as common files. The V100R003 upgrade patch file is S23_33_53-V100R003SPH007.pat, which can be obtained from http://support.huawei.com/support/pages/editionctrl/catalog/ShowVersionDetail.do?actionFlag=getDetail&node=000001447555&colID=ROOTWEB|CO0000000065.

After login, fill in the application form. You can download the file after your application is approved. The startup file of V100R005C01SPC100 is not protected, so you do not need to load the patch.

Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Preparations for Upgrade

If the system is not installed with any software, do not restart or power off the S3300 until the upgrade is complete. Otherwise, an exception will occur. If the S3300 is powered off during the upgrade, use the BootROM method to upgrade the software. If an exception occurs, contact Huawei technical personnel.

Step 3 Run the delete command to delete unnecessary files to ensure there is enough space for storing relevant upgrade files. Before deleting the unnecessary files, ensure that the files are backed up or are unwanted. The following is an example of deleting the S2300.cc file. For details, see "Managing the File System" in the Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide – Basic Configurations.

After you run the delete /unreserved command to delete a file from the flash, the file cannot be restored; therefore, run this command with caution, and a file backup is recommended.

Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

4 Upgrade Operations on a Single

Switch

4.1 Upgrading the Switch to V100R005C01SPC100 Using the Command Line

The command line upgrade method has little impact on services; therefore, you are advised to upgrade an operating device by using the command line.

Purpose To upgrade the system software

Impact Services are interrupted when the device restarts.

Time Required

In the scenario where a single device is configured and service deployment is simple, services are interrupted about three minutes. In the scenario where service deployment is complicated, the service interruption time increases and the time depends on the complexity of service.

Requirements

The switch that runs system software of an earlier version functions properly.

The available space in the flash memory is sufficient for storing the system software.

Before the S3300 is upgraded, you must delete the original startup file. For details on how to delete the original startup file, see 3.7 Checking the Flash Memory Space.

The methods of upgrading the system software using command line are similar on the S2300, S3300, and the S5300. In the following description, the system software of the S2300 is upgraded.

The following describes only how to download the system software by using the S2300 as the FTP server. For other methods of loading the system software, see the Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide - Basic Configurations.

The S5300 has a dedicated management interface, namely, MEth. The MEth interface can be used as the Layer 3 interface.

Step 1 Configure the S2300 as an FTP server.

Enter 7. Reboot on the advanced BootROM menu to restart the switch. Then, the S2300 restores the baud rate on the console interface to 9600 bit/s. The baud rate of the HyperTerminal also needs to be set to 9600 bit/s. The PC then can communicate with the S2300.

4.3 Upgrading the S5300-SI to V100R005C01SPC100 Using the USB Flash Drive

4.3.1 OverviewIf you do not have a PC in the on-site deployment, use the USB flash drive in which the system software and configuration file are stored. The software commissioning engineer is not required.

Only the S5300-SI supports the upgrade in the USB way. The USB flash drive cannot be used for the upgrade of a stack.

The general process of the upgrade in the USB way is as follows:

1. Copy files.

When the S5300-SI is started successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5 Hz), the USB flash drive can be inserted to load files. The S5300-SI automatically downloads the system software and configuration file according to the index file in the USB flash drive.

2. Restart the switch.

The S5300-SI sets the system software and configuration file for next startup, and then restarts automatically.

3. Verify the loading of files.

After restarting successfully (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks at 0.5 Hz), the S5300-SI begins to verify the loaded files. When the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks at 0.5 Hz, the upgrade is finished.

4.3.2 Upgrading the Software Using the USB Flash Drive

Preparations for Upgrade1. Prepare the hardware.

USB port: The S5300-SI provides the USB 1.1 port.

USB flash drive:

The USB flash drive delivered with Huawei switch is recommended because this USB flash drive is compatible with the switch. The USB flash drive must be paid independently. If you have not bought the USB flash drive, contact local Huawei office.

The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 format; otherwise, set the format to FAT32 before using it.

Upgrade Guide

The space in the USB flash drive must be sufficient for the system software and configuration file.

2. Download the required system software and configuration file.

3. Create the index file.

Step 1: Create the file usbload_config.txt.

Step 2: Fill in the file.

If the index file contains the following two formats, the S5300-SI uses the information in format (2). If the required information is not obtained, the S5300-SI uses the information in format (1).

To write multiple items in the index file, press Enter when you finish each item.

(1) To upgrade the same system software and configuration file on multiple devices, fill in the file in the format <boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile=; cfgfile=; patchfile=;/>.

− boardtype=s53mv is a fixed format, which does not need to be modified.

− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.

− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.

− The V100R003 and V100R005 do not support the patch upgrade, so keep patchfile= blank.

Example:

<boardtype=s53mv; vrpfile= S5300SI-V100R005C01SPC100.CC; cfgfile=vrpcfg.cfg;

patchfile=;/>

(2) To upgrade a single device, fill in the file in the format <mac=; vrpfile=; cfgfile=; patchfile=;/>.

− _View the MAC address of the switch on the chassis and add the MAC address behind mac= in the format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.

− Fill in the system software name behind vrpfile=.

− Fill in the configuration file name behind cfgfile=.

− The V100R003 and V100R005 do not support the patch upgrade, so keep patchfile= blank.

Example:

<mac=0018-8200-0001; vrpfile= S5300SI-V100R005C01SPC100.CC;

cfgfile=vrpcfg1.cfg; patchfile=;/>

Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch

Do not power off the switch during file copy; otherwise, the upgrade fails or the switch cannot start.

Do not remove the USB flash drive before the upgrade is finished; otherwise, the USB flash drive may be damaged.

Procedure

Step 1 Power on the S5300-SI, and wait until the system completes the startup (you are advertised to wait for two minutes).

Step 2 Confirm that the system is operating stably (the SYS indicator is in green and blinks every two seconds). If the system operating is unstable, wait or solve the issue.

If the SYS indicator is on and in green or orange, the system startup is not finished. Wait until the system starts successfully.

If the SYS indicator is on and in red, the system is started but an error occurs. Fix the problem before the next step. Check whether the power supply and the fan function properly. If no, power off the S5300-SI, and then restart the S5300-SI. If the fault persists (the indicator is on and in red), contact Huawei technical support personnel.

Step 3 Insert the USB flash drive.

If the SYS indicator is in green and blinks more than twice every second, the system is copying the system software and configuration file from the USB flash drive.

After copying the files, the system restarts.

If the SYS indicator is in orange and blinks every two seconds after the restart, the upgrade is successful. Now you can remove the USB flash drive.

If the SYS indicator is on or blinks in red, or blinks and is in read, an error occurs. Power off the S5300-SI and power on it, and then insert the USB flash drive again. If the upgrade fails three times, check whether the index file on the USB flash drive is correct, or contact the Huawei technical support personnel.

5 Upgrade Operations on a Stack

5.1 Upgrading All Stack Member Switches to V100R005C01SPC100 by Using the Command Line

Purpose To upgrade all stack member switches to V100R005C01SPC100 by using the command line

Impact Services are interrupted when the devices restart.

Time Required

When a single device is upgraded and service deployment is simple, services are interrupted about 3 minutes. When a stack is upgraded, the service interruption time increases, and the time depends on the complexity of services and the stack.

Prerequisites

The devices to be upgraded function properly.

The flash memory has enough space to store the system software.

The methods of for upgrading the system software of the S3300 and the S5300 using the command line interface are similar. Here, the S3300 is used as an example.

The section describes only how to download the system software by using the S3300 as the FTP server. For other methods of loading the system software, see the Quidway S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet Switches Configuration Guide - Basic Configurations.

The S5300 provides a management interface MEth. You can use this interface as a Layer 3 interface.

To retain the roles of the master and slave devices after the upgrade, set priority of the master switch to be the highest in the stack before the upgrade.

3 Upgrade Operations on a StackQuidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet Switches

Upgrade Guide

The following operations are performed on the master switch. Here, the stack contains two member switches.

Step 1 Delete the current startup software package.

5.2 Using the Intelligent Upgrade Function

5.2.1 OverviewIntelligent upgrade is a function that automatically upgrades or rolls back the system software of a new member switch to the version of the master switch.

A stack system is established only when all the following requirements are met:

All the member switches use the same software version. If the master switch detects a different software version on the new member switch, it upgrades or rolls back the software of the new member switch to the version of the stack.

Issue 01 (2011-01-26)

Quidway S2300/S3300/S5300 Series Ethernet SwitchesUpgrade Guide 6 Upgrade Operations on a Stack

The S3352 supports a maximum of eight switches in a stack system. The other S3300 models and the S5300 support up to nine switches in a stack system.

The S3352 and S3328 cannot be added to the same stack system.

All the member switches belong to the same series. That is, the EI series and SI series cannot form a stack.

All the member switches are connected by using stack cables and stack modules.

All the member switches are working properly.

The stacking function is enabled on all the member switches.

The stack processes version upgrade and rollback for new member switches in the same way.

5.2.2 Upgrading a New Member Switch Using the Intelligent Upgrade Function

Preparations for Upgrade

Before upgrading a new member switch of a stack, ensure that:

The new member switch and the current stack members belong to the same series.

The new member switch is connected to other member switches by using stack cables and stack modules.

The stacking function is enabled on the new member switch. (This function is enabled by default.)

If the flash memory of the new member switch does not have sufficient space to store the startup software package, the switch automatically deletes a software package to free up the space. If the switch is an S5300, it deletes a non-startup software package. If the switch is an S3300, it deletes the current startup software package. If the available space in the flash memory is still insufficient for the upgrade software, the switch restarts repeatedly. In this case, upgrade the software of the switch to the version of the stack system manually, and then add the switch to the stack. For the upgrade procedure, see 4 Upgrade Operations on a Single Switch.

The S3300s in a stack system cannot be upgraded from V100R003 to V100R005C01SPC100 by using the method described in this chapter. To upgrade the S3300s in a stack system, use the command line interface (see 4.1 Upgrading the Switch toV100R005C01SPC100 Using the Command Line) or the NMS Data Center (DC) (see the Quidway S2300&S3300&S5300 V100R005 DC Upgrade Guide).

During the upgrade, ensure that the stack cables are functioning properly. If the upgrade of a switch fails, manually upgrade the system software of the switch to the version of the stack system, and then add the switch to the stack system.

Upgrade Process

Start the new member switch.
