History of the Seahawk Logo The Seahawk was chosen as Cabrillo College’s official mascot by the first student council in 1959. The Seahawk is a mythical bird based on the osprey. There have been several variations of the Seahawk logo over the years, created by various groups within the college, to serve many different purposes. Some of the more notable ones are shown below:

Clearly the Seahawk is an important and valued part of the college’s identity. However, because there have been so many variations of the Seahawk, there was confusion on the part of students, faculty, staff and the community as to which rendition was the “official” Seahawk resulting in poor identification of the Seahawk with Cabrillo College. What is the Cabrillo “C”? The college’s athletics teams have also used the letter “C” to denote “Cabrillo”. Over the years, variations of the letter were created and used by the different teams and also added to the confusion of the identity of the Cabrillo Seahawks particularly within the community.



The New Face of Cabrillo College Athletics As a part of the Cabrillo College identity system, the Seahawk Identity System plays a special role in identifying Athletics programs. This manual gives guidelines for the approved use and reproduction of the Cabrillo College Seahawk Identity system. A strong visual identity is based on the correct usage of the Seahawk Identity System. Consistent use gives Cabrillo and its athletics teams a professional image that will increase memorability over time. Non-Athletics Use Non-athletic Seahawk elements have been created to allow other entities of the college to have a friendly, collegiate face they may use according to the guidelines outlined in this manual. Why do we need an identity system? The goal of the Cabrillo College and Seahawk Identity Systems is to distinguish all Cabrillo College print, broadcast, digital and product applications as clearly recognizable Cabrillo College programs, services and products. When consistently applied, the elements work together to convey the unique qualities of Cabrillo College and to create a coherent Cabrillo College image. Along with the college’s official colors and typefaces, these graphic elements create awareness, recognition and loyalty in the Cabrillo brand. These marks are the exclusive property of Cabrillo College, and U.S. law protects their use. The Cabrillo College Seahawk Identity System Today, the college has standardized on a Seahawk Identity System as a part of its overall identity system. The Seahawk Identity System consists of the following elements and trademarks:

- Athletics font - College colors - Seahawk head - Cabrillo “C” - Seahawk eyes - Seahawk caricatures

These elements are the only elements that may be used by the college to represent the Seahawk or the Cabrillo “C”. When using any of the elements in this identity system, all college entities must follow these guidelines in order to maintain the integrity and ownership of these trademarks. Divisions, programs or departments who wish a Seahawk caricature variation must contact the Marketing and Communications Department to have one created. A well-known local illustrator, Jon Hastings, creates all Seahawk identity elements. The Seahawk Identity System elements presented here are complementary to the Cabrillo College Identity System. Cabrillo’s Director of Athletics and the Director of Marketing and Communications administer the Seahawk Identity System jointly. No other version, variation or derivative of the Seahawk Identity System may be made or used without the written approval of the Director of Athletics and the Director of Marketing and Communications. The Elements Typeface The official typeface for the Seahawk Identity System is Impact. Only the Athletics Department may use this typeface in conjunction with Athletics’ activities and events. It may not be used in lieu of the Cabrillo College wordmark or on official college correspondence. The Impact font is available in only one weight and is suitable for headline and signage use only.

Go Seahawks! Cabrillo Seahawks A Note About College Letterheads To maintain consistency and professionalism in all college correspondence, individual college entities, events, or persona may not design their own letterhead. The Marketing and Communications Department can, upon request, design an electronic letterhead in keeping with the college’s identity system for any college program.



College Colors The official colors of Cabrillo College are Cabrillo blue, Cabrillo white and Cabrillo black. 4-color process printing In a 4-color process layout, the logo must always appear in Cabrillo blue, Cabrillo white and Cabrillo black. 2-color spot printing In a 2-color spot layout, the Seahawk head and the Cabrillo “C”, whenever possible should appear in Cabrillo blue and either Cabrillo white or Cabrillo black. 1-color printing 1-color layouts must always be in either Cabrillo blue or Cabrillo black on a light background and Cabrillo blue or Cabrillo white on a dark background. Usage Guidelines Usage guidelines have been established to assure that the various elements of the Seahawk Identity System are used correctly and that the Seahawk’s identity succeeds. Following these guidelines builds brand equity and establishes a recognizable image for Cabrillo’s Athletics Program. The Seahawk Head The Seahawk head was designed to exude ferocity and strength in keeping with the competitive attitude of our winning athletics teams. There are two different versions of the Seahawk Head—the Athletics Seahawk and the College Seahawk. Only the Athletics Department may use the Athletics Seahawk Head according to the guidelines outlined in this manual. No other college department, division, program or entity may use this logo. The Director of Athletics must approve all uses of the Athletics Seahawk Head. Any Cabrillo department, division, program or service may use the College Seahawk (Seahawk head without feathers) by following the guidelines outlined in this document. All uses must be pre-approved by the Director of Marketing and Communications prior to publication in any form.

For Athletics Use Only The Cabrillo “C” In addition to the Seahawk head, the Cabrillo “C” is used to represent the Cabrillo College Seahawks on team uniforms and merchandising items such as clothing, banners, key chains, etc. No other college division, department, program or entity may use the Cabrillo “C”. All uses of the Cabrillo “C” must be approved by the Director of Athletics. The Cabrillo “C” is not allowed on official college correspondence or documents in lieu of the Cabrillo College logo.
