Extreme TemperatureLamons HTGProduct FamilyLamons high temperature gaskets represent the ultimate solution forindustrial bolted joints that are exposed to extreme temperature. Bycombining the superior sealing performance, impermeability and stabilityof flexible graphite with an exceptional oxidation barrier, Lamons HTG sealsrepresent the best technology available in regards to torque retention andsealability at elevated temperatures.

The Lamons’ HTG concept utilizes a premium super oxidation inhibitedflexible graphite that is completely shielded from oxidation by barriers ofmica/phyllosilicate. This inhibited flexible graphite is the most oxidationresistant available on the market and like all homogeneous flexible graphite, completely maintains its physical and mechanical properties regardless oftemperature exposure. The phyllosilicate barriers consist of Novus Hi-Temp®

material which is a mica/phyllosilicate based sealing material that containsa very low content of inorganic binder (less than half of the binder found invermiculite/phyllosilicate filled sheets). The combination of these two sealingmaterials allows the user to maintain the stability and impermeability offlexible graphite and eliminate the effects of oxidation at extremetemperatures. Lamons HTG family of products are the most stable andimpermeable gasket materials available for extreme temperatures.

Kammpro-HTG kammprofile gasketsLamons Kammpro gaskets are recognized as a problem solverfor heat exchangers, large vessels and equipment thatexperience excessive movement due to thermal expansion. The Kammpro provides one of the tightest seals combinedwith superior load bearing characteristics.

WRI-HTG spiral wound gasketLamons “SpiraSeal” gaskets are manufacturedusing specially fabricated machinery. They areconfigured to allow superior resiliency and self-adjustment when compared to conventionalgaskets. Lamons offers these gaskets in almostany combination of size, thickness andcomponent material.

Traditional Seal Concepts

Popular compressed non-asbestos gasket exposed to400°F for a duration of 4 hours. The physical propertiesof these materials were severely degraded whenexposed to a fraction of their rating. The structureturns glass-like and can fracture with slight flexing. While these materials can still maintain functionality inmost cases, their ability to compensate for thermaland pressure fluctuations is severely diminished byheat exposure.

A vermiculite based compressed sheet material thatutilizes aramid fiber and a high content of organic binderis severely affected by temperature and chemicalattack. A vermiculite material offers no additionaladvantage over compressed non-asbestos at elevatedtemperatures due to the high organic content.

Flexible graphite that is unprotected from oxidizers andexposed to the atmosphere will convert to a gasthrough oxidation. Flexible graphite that is containedwithin a spiral wound element (left) will degrade at aslower rate than a faced metal core (right) because itis relatively encapsulated. Total oxidation is inevitableunless the flexible graphite is sufficiently protected.

A kammprofile with a vermiculite based facing. Anexposure to 1500°F for six hours between flangesdestroys the rubber binder that holds the vermiculitepowder in suspension.

Vermiculite filled spiral wound gaskets utilize organicbinder as a processing aid for the filler. Elevatedtemperature degrades the binder and will compromisetightness and sealability.

Most sealing materials are detrimentally affected by extreme temperature exposure. Many competitiveproducts utilize a necessary processing aid consisting of an organic rubber binder where an inorganicmaterial is held in suspension. This low temperature binder begins to degrade, carbonize and embrittle attemperatures as low as 300°F, resulting in a complete loss of physical and mechanical properties at moderatetemperatures. This rubber binder is susceptible to chemical attack and degradation even in mildlyaggressive services. This degradation inevitably leads to torque loss and leakage. Since the binder is evenlydispersed throughout the sealing material, a complete loss of physical and mechanical properties isexperienced when exposed to elevated temperature. The mechanical properties that are characteristic ofan effective seal are lost when the rubber binder is subjected to temperature and chemical attack.

Independent TGA weight loss testing illustrating the amount of binder contained within popular hightemperature gasket solutions. Higher binder content corresponds to weight, volume and torque loss

Thermal cycling test data shows very favorable test results for both Lamons Kammpro HTG and acompetitive vermiculite based material at 500 degrees F.

Thermal Cycling data at 800 degrees F is where the difference is significantly illustrated. Organic binder inthe vermiculite based facing is compromised to the point of leakage. The degradation of the binder in thevermiculite facing results in a loss of the ability to tolerate thermal upsets. The Lamons Kammpro HTGmaintains the flexible graphite’s original resilience and physical properties while protected from oxidizersby the phyllosilicate barriers.

HTG GASKETING PRODUCT FAMILYLamons WRI-HTG and Kammpro HTG are the most stable gasket designsavailable for extreme temperatures. The utilization of flexible graphite allowsthe gasket to maintain torque and tightness through thermal cycling whileproviding the ultimate fugitive emissions seal. By utilizing a phyllosilicateoxidation shielding, the flexible graphite is able to maintain its integrity andprovide freedom from oxidation.
