Basic Search Tipso Be specific – the more specific your search words the more
relevant (and fewer the results)Example: Russian blue cats instead of just cats
o Search engines retrieve websites where all of your search words appear. Start with one or two search words and add more to narrow your search results, if needed
o Use “likely” words

Basic Search Tipso Capitalization does NOT matter for search words and spelling
RARELY matters
o Pay attention to “autocomplete” search suggestions
o Word order matters – type search words in the order normally spoken or written. Search engines retrieve webpages with your search words together in the order typed, before retrieving pages containing them only close together or anywhere

Basic Search Tipso Use double quotation marks around search words to search a
phrase – to retrieve pages with your search words in the specified order only
o Use the minus sign directly before a search word (no space) to exclude it from search resultsExample: salsa recipe –tomatoes

.edu – Higher education institutions – .ac is used in the UK
www.uvic.edu .net – Network operations – e.g. – Internet service providers
www.telus.net .org – organizations, non-profits

.gov – government agencies www.gov.bc.ca
.gc – Government of Canada
www.gc.ca, www.weather.gc.ca .ca – Canada
www.amazon.ca, www.cbc.ca, www.cbc.ca/bc.ca is used with a province code for provincial government sites www.gov.bc.ca
