Turn ignition key to "OFF" position and remove key.

Always remove key when leaving tractor to preventunauthorized use.

. Never use choke to stop engineNOTE: Under certain conditions when tractor is standingidle with the engine running, hot engine exhaust gases maycause "browning" of grass. To eliminate this possibility, always stop engine when stopping tractor on grass areas,1IA ..............CAUTION: Always stop tractor com-pletely, as described above, before leav-ing the operator's position; to empty...... grass catcher, etc.

    i,i

TO USE THROTTLE CONTROL (See Fig. 8)Always operate engine at full throttle. Operating engine at tess than full throttle reduces the

battery charging rate Full throttle offers the best bagging and mower perfor-

    mance.

dipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds, remove and read oil level.. If necessary, add oit until"FULL" mark on dipstick is reached. Do not overfill

For cold weather operation you should change oil foreasier starting (See "OIL VISCOSITY CHART" in theCustomer Responsibilities section of this manual)..

To change engine oil, see the Customer Responsibili-ties section in this manual.

ADD GASOLINE Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded

gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane (Use of leadedgasoline will increase carbon and lead oxide depositsand reduce valve life), Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30days to assure fuel freshness.

IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURESBELOW 32F(0C), USE FRESH, CLEAN WENTERGRADEGASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLD WEATHERSTARTINGWARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) canattract moisture which leads to separation and formation ofacids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuel system should be emptied before stor-age of 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the

J _ CAUTION: Do not drive up or downhills with slopes greater than 15 anddo not drive across any slope.

    ,m=

Choose the slowest speed before starting up or downhills.

Avoid stopping or changing speed on hills. If slowing is necessary, move throttle control lever to

slower position. If stopping is absolutely necessary, push clutch/brake

pedal quickly to brake position and engage parkingbrake,

engine and let it run until the fue! lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season. See Storage Instruc-tions for additional information. Never use engine orcarburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

  • OPERATIONi ......................... ii, , i iiii1,1111ii ii , ,

TO START ENGINE (See Fig. 8)When starting the engine for the first time or if the enginehas run out of fue!, it will take extra cranking time to movefuel from the tank to the engine. Sit on seat in operating position, depress clutch!brake

pedal and set parking brake_, P_ace gear shift lever in neutral (N) position. Move attachment clutch to "DISENGAGED" position. Move throttle control to fast (,_) position Pull choke control out for a cold engine start attempt.

For a warm engine start attempt the choke control maynot be needed.

Note: Before starting, read the warm and cold startingprocedures below. Insert key into ignition and turn keyclockwise to"START"

position and release key as soon as engine starts. Donot run starter continuously for more than fifteen sec-onds per minute. If the engine does not start afterseveraI attempts, push choke control in, wait a fewminutes and try again, tfengine still does not start, pullthe choke control out and retry,

WARM WEATHER STARTING (50 F and above) When engine starts, slowly push choke control in until

the engine begins to run smoothly. If the engine startsto run roughly, pull the choke control out slightly for afew seconds and then continue to push the control inslow[yo

= The attachments and ground drive can now be used Ifthe engine does not accept the load, restart the engineand allow it to warm up for one minute using the chokeas described above.

COLD WEATHER STARTING (50 F and below). When engine starts, slowly push choke control in until

the engine begins to run smoothly. Continue to pushthe choke control in small steps allowing the engine toaccept small changes in speed and load, until thechoke control is fully in. If the engine starts to runroughly, pull the choke control out slightly for a fewseconds and then continue to push the control inslowly. This may require an engine warm-up periodfrom several seconds to several minutes, dependingon the temperature.

, The attachments can be used during the engine warm-up period and may require the choke control be pulledout slightly.

NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in coldtemperatures (below 32 F) the carburetor fuel mixture mayneed to be adjusted for best engine performance, See "TOADJUST CARBURETOR" in the Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual.

When mowing large areas, start by turning to the rightso that clippings will discharge away from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mowin the opposite direction making left hand turns untilfinished (See Fig. 11A )_

If grass is extremely tall, it shoutd be mowed twice toreduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip-pings. Make first cut relatively high; the second to thedesired height.

Do not mow grass when it is wet, Wet grass will plugmower and teave undesirable clumps. Allow grass todry before mowing.

Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing toassure better mowing performance and proper dis-charge of material Regulate ground speed by select-trig a low enough gear to give the mower cuttingperformance as well as the quality of cut desired.

When operating attachments, select a ground speedthat wilt suit the terrain and give best performance ofthe attachment being used.

MOWING TIPS Tire chains cannot be used when the mower housing

is attached to tractor. Mower should be properly leveled for best mowing

performance. See'TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" inthe Service and Adjustments section of this manual,

The left hand side of mower should be used for trim-mingo

Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the areathat has been cut, Have the cut area to the right of thetractor. This will result in a more even distribution ofclippings and more uniform cutting.

    FIG. 11A

MULCHING MOWING TIPSIMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEPMOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS ANDTRASH. CLEAN AFTER EACH USE. The special mulching blade will recut the grass clip-

pings many times and reduce them in size so that asthey fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grassand not be noticed. Aiso, the mulched grass willbiodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speedas this will provide the best recutting action of theblades,

o Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tendsto form clumps and interferes with the mulching action_The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon,At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut areawilt not be exposed to the direct sun.

For best resufts, adjust the mower cutting height so thatthe mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grassblades (See Fig, 1IB)_ For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut and mow slowly,

Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-quire that an area be mulched a second time tocompletely hide the clippings_ When doing a secondcut, mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path,

Change your cutting pattern from weekto week, Mownorth to south one weekthen change to east to west thenext week. This will help prevent matting and grainingof the lawno

$ RVICE ANTO ADJUST CARBURETOR (See Figs, 36 &37)The carburetor has been preset at the factory and adjust-ment should not be necessary. However, minor adjust-ment may be required to compensate for differences in fuel, temperature, altitude or load. If the carburetor does needadjustment, proceed as follows:in general, turning the mixture screw in (clockwise) de-creases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a leaner fuel/air mixture. Turning the mixture screw out (counterclock-wise) increases the supply of fuel to the engine giving aricher fuel/air mixture.IMPORTANT: DAMAGE TO THE NEEDLES AND THESEATS IN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF SCREW ISTURNED IN TOO TIGHT.

Be sure battery drain tube is securely attached. tf battery is removed from tractor for storage, do not

store battery directly on concrete or damp surfaces.

FUEL SYSTEMIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUMDEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUELSYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FILTER,FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE. ALSO,EXPERIENCE iNDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDEDFUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL ORMETHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADSTO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURINGSTORAGE.. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUELSYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE iN STORAGE Drain the fuel tank. Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and

carburetor are empty..- Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the

fuet tank or permanent damage may occur. Use fresh fuel next season..

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during stor-age. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer_ Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer, Run engine at least 10 minutes after addingstabilizer to allow the stabilize r to reach the carburetor. Donot drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OILDrain oil (with engine warm) and replace with clean engineoil. (See "ENGINE" in the Customer Responsibilitiessection of this manual).CYLINDERS Remove spark plug(s). Pour one ounce of oil through spark plug hole(s) into

cylinder(s). Turn ignitionkey to"START" position for a few seconds

to distribute oil. Replace with new spark ptug(s).

OTHER Do not store gasoline from one season to another.. Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust

Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems If possible, store your tractor indoors and cover it to

give protection from dust and dirt. Cover your tractor with a suitable protective cover that

does not retain moisture,. Do not use plastic, Plasticcannot breathe which aJlows condensation to form andwill cause your tractor to rust.
