PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2014 marked the first year of turf hockey in the Barossa Valley. I am very happy to say Nuriootpa

Hockey Club adapted well to the new turf pitch winning 4 of the 6 premierships on offer, importantly

these premierships including both junior grades.

Again we fielded sides in all grades & entered 2 men’s B Grade teams for the first time in a decade.

Our Hookin2Hockey numbers continue to grow & Gail Kirby deserves special thanks for her efforts with

our youngest club members.

The extended playing hours presented some new challenges for our canteen volunteers with our club

choosing to offer canteen facilities on both Friday nights & for 10 hours on a Saturday. Thank you to all

those who assisted in this extended, essential and ultimately successful part of our club duties.

We fully committed ourselves to the Heritage Round once again & put on an impressive show both on

& off the field.

As a committee we deliberately kept our annual subs low this year as well as deciding not to charge a

match fee. We agreed, if necessary, to operate at a small financial loss in the hope of encouraging

more players to join our club.

A wrap up of the 2014 season would be incomplete without mentioning the development of our ‘shed’.

What was previously just a storage facility has become a meeting place lined with memorabilia & very

impressive bar & heating. Thank you to all those who have helped transform ‘the shed’. More

improvements are planned over the off season.

Individual milestones & achievements were also many, a few of the highlights were:

Courtney Ribbons achieved both BVHA Life Membership & the Hockey SA Award for Outstanding

Service to Hockey.

Brian ‘Packa’ Ivkovic became the first club member to reach 400 senior games (scoring in 4 of

them)

Brad Fairey passed the 300 game mark and also became our 16th Life Member.

As always, our club had many members who made significant contributions at an association level in

both executive & coaching positions. Thank you to Sue & John Stephens, Courtney Ribbons, Gail Kirby

& Andy Milne for your efforts at Association level. Looking forward from an association viewpoint, talks

are continuing with the Riverland Association & have recently started with Clare & Districts Association

on options to provide better hockey competitions to our members.

Once again thank you to the sponsors, team coaches/managers, canteen volunteers & all our other

volunteers for your efforts over 2014.

It has been great to see so many club members regularly turning up to our monthly club meetings. I

would like to personally thank our committee members & executive who continue to manage & lead

this club forward. Your efforts leave us organised, financially strong and in a great position to support

our teams on the field.

It has been a pleasure to be Nuriootpa Hockey Club’s president for the last 4 years.

HOOK IN2 HOCKEY REPORT It was a bit of an uncertain start to the H2H season on how the program was going to run in 2014, with

times and format. But after much discussion with clubs, to introduce a mid-week U9 program, it was

decided by the BVHA H2H committee that clubs continue with their individual training nights, and that

U9 & U11 games will be played on the Saturday.

The club was once again able to have a presence in the local primary schools with the H2H program

in term 1, before the season started, at Nuriootpa and Redeemer, and for the first time Kapunda and

Light Pass. This was done with the help of Hugh Purvis from Hockey SA, and thank-you to Sharyn

Seagenschnitter for coming out to some of the schools when I couldn’t.

This then lead to an after school H2H program to run at Kapunda Primary on Wednesdays during term

2. It was well attended and introduced 14, U11’s to the skills and game of hockey. Thank you to Tracy

Warner for her help when she was available.

Nuriootpa started its official training on Thursday 1st May with a Sausage Sizzle for players and family

after. Thank you to Dimchurch for suppling bread and sausages.

Again we had a great return of last year’s players and a few new faces. We had 30 U9’s registered,

which gave us 3 teams, though we had 4 who were happy not to play out on a Saturday. A big thank

you to Tony Simpfendorfer and Sharyn Seagenschnitter who helped coach, and the many parents who

helped out on the Thursday nights with drills. Junior Byron Hoffmann was a great, helping at trainings

and umpiring a game every Saturday, thank-you.

Tracey Warner was coach for the U11’s, and had the help of Daniel Wilsdon and support of Manager

Matt Lehmann. They did a wonderful job with the 11 U11 players they had. Thank you to them all.

With the U11 and then U14 teams having a full field team and then some on the bench, there was not

much opportunity for lower players to play up this year. This brought about the importance and a

reminder, for coaches to communicate with the coach below or the H2H co-ordinator on which players

have the potential or could be recommended to play a game up.

Our H2H presentations were on Sunday 31st August at Stockwell Clubrooms with a BBQ Lunch. Each

child received a key-ring with the clubs logo and their name. Thank you to Dimchurch Vineyards and

April Hoffmann for their donation and time to this day.

A MEN REPORT 2014 was a steep learning curve for both the players and the coaches of the senior men. But with the

pain of a Grand final loss fresh in the memory, the group was more than ever determined to do what

was necessary to win the flag this season.

The first step was the appointment of Cameron Mullins to head fitness coach, Cam with the assistance

of Craig and Greg Schulz put a motivated group through a gruelling pre-season that prepared the core

of the side well for the rigours of turf. This proved crucial early in the season as the sides superior

fitness was a deciding factor in the opening rounds.

The transition from grass hockey to turf hockey was a lot more trying than many, including myself

anticipated as the shift in strategy was hindered in many cases by 10 to 15 years on “Grass” instinct.

But over time and with much effort the senior men’s group made progress and looked more and more

fluent week by week. Long term injuries to Mick Grope and Steve Gallasch early in the season created

chances for the next generation to make a name for themselves and happily they did well with the likes

of Cody Longo, Steve Oag and Dexter Falkenberg cementing A grade spots by the end of the year,

while Daniel Wilson, Rusty Falkenberg and Ethan Mills showed us glimpses of what they will one day

be capable of.

By seasons end, the group was seriously starting to hit their straps led by the inspirational Craig and

Greg Schulz and the final month of the season threw up some difficult selection decisions, but in my

opinion that is the sign of a healthy system and should be encouraged.

In short, considering that 2014 was the first year of turf hockey, everyone involved this year should be

proud of their efforts and look forward to future improvements in the year to come. Winning the

premiership and having both B grade sides playing in the grand final was a satisfying result, but should

only be seen as a starting point for the coming years.

Lastly I would like to thank Ross Beckwith for his considerable efforts as assistant coach, Wal Lehmann

for once again managing the side and acknowledge Craig Schulz, Greg Schulz and Cam Mullins for all

their work this season.

While creating history again by winning the first flag on turf in both A Grade and B grade, I would like

to point out that the great Nuriootpa Hockey club did not get where it is by being content with its own

achievements, but by continuously aiming to improve itself.

That is the challenge I put to the NHC senior men in 2015.

A WOMEN REPORT

Unfortunately there is only one word for the 2014 season and that is disappointing. Especially for a

team that started with so much promise and early on was considered the team to beat by many in the

competition.

With the preseason sessions on the turf at Port Adelaide we gained a small advantage and certainly

hit the ground running and were undefeated until we played Gawler at Gawler – our first loss for the

season and in many ways the turning point for the season as we struggled to regain any consistent

form from here.

With only one grass game the draw worked in our favour but we were unable to capitalise on it. We

still produced some very good games throughout the remainder of the season – but also some very

disappointing games as well.

With injuries, illness, holidays, school trips, work, birthdays, interstate visitors and pregnancies all

having an impact on the starting line-up and attendance at training week in week out for the remainder

of the season it was difficult to build a solid foundation.

There are however several issues that need to be addressed if the club is to be successful in the

women’s competition in the foreseeable future. I have specified these in more detail in a letter to the

committee but essentially they involve a better structure at training, player depth (retention and

recruitment), playing group attitude and a non-playing manager.

There are some good base level foundations that can be built on, but it will take work and a willingness

to move forward and change with the game.

Do I still believe that this team is capable of great things – absolutely and without question. What they

need to understand is that you don’t need a team of champions to be a champion team.

At the end of the day all of the highlighted issues are fixable and while season 2014 was disappointing

there were some highlights – but they will be different for everyone. It could be a specific goal scored,

representative achievements or a specific win. It could even be a game we didn’t win but we were more

than competitive in and executed the game plan and fought hard until the final whistle (prelim final

comes to mind for me). There were many moments like this and more during the season - I embrace

them all, good and not so good as they are all part of the roller coaster that is coaching.

Do I feel like there is unfinished business – yes, would I do it again – yes.

If I was to coach again next season there would be many things that would be done differently with a

higher focus on fitness, stronger development of good basic skills and better execution in teaching the

game plan to both teams. Definitely a focus on junior development and their inclusion in the senior

squads, as well as some much needed player recruitment.

Either way I am truly grateful for the opportunity. I have personally learnt a lot over the past two years

and still have much to learn about the skill of coaching but if this is the end – for now – of my coaching

with Nuriootpa Hockey Club – my only true regret is that we didn’t bring home a premiership.
