Thisseasonhasonceagainbeenprogressiveandexciting.

Notonlyhavewebeenabletoseetheever-buildingprojectsintheclub,butthenewintroductionsanddevelopmentsmanagementhavemadeonbehalfoftheclubandtheirmembers.

These developments, including the advances made in the upstairs bar and bistro area have been great. Changes to the menu and aesthetics are turning the surf club into a seaside-dining hub.

There was a restructure of the official constitution this season. Through the tireless efforts of the Constitution Committee, this process was timely and the transition was

smooth. Thanks must go for the efforts of these members. Not only has there been great success upstairs at our club this season, but also downstairs has been a buzz of excitement. Our increase in financial members including competitors has increased once again this year. This could not come at a better time in preparation for Lifesaving World Championships in 2018. With the organising in progress, this is a very exciting time for the club.

Of course, none of this progression at our club would be possible without the diligent work our members’ do behind the scenes in fund-raising and organising our events. I would like to thank, on behalf of the management committee the members at the club for their efforts this season.

Edwina Jackson

Theseason2016/17hasbeenanotherpositiveyear,withmanyfabulousresultsrightacrosstheClub.OnbehalfoftheManagementBoard,thankyoutoourmembers,theirfamiliesandtheClubsregularsupportersthroughsocialmemberships,enjoyingtheBarandBistroandattendingthevariouseventsthattheClubhasheld.WithoutsuchalargededicatedgroupofmembersandsupporterstheClubwouldnotbeinthepositionitistoday.

Whilst the Club still has a long road to travel as far as actual cash in accounts, the commitment made by the Board last year to build and invest in competition and long overdue capital works has progressed. As a result of this investment, a reduction in the end of year results cash position and profit has occurred, however with 80% of the large expenses now completed and the first cash allowance now set aside for future works, we are (slowly, slowly…) moving into astronger financial position for a second year running. Competition this season saw the Club move into overall third place at State Titles, with just over 100 points shy of second, delivering the best result in competition at the Club since 2009. This was achieved through solid state titles from the seniors and juniors, moving away from the reliance on masters to bring the Club into a competitive position at States. Next year with a few more masters on board, investment in swimming and continuing to build, the Club is aiming for a top two position.

Our juniors overall results at States, whilst falling away a little over last year’s results, still reported fabulous achievements by our U17 to u13 year kids. There were record results in major placings at Australian Titles as well as State Team representation and Glenelg filling 21% of the States Surf Life Saving SA’s Youth Performance Academy positions. Our amazing U15 females at Glenelg made up 4 of the 8 positions in that team’s age group. It is very exciting to see these young male and female athletes starting to make a mark on the national stage. It is exciting to have such a talented young group of athletes and great young adults coming through the system.

Big call out to Lucy Derbyshire who was awarded the Silver medal at the Aussie Titles U14 Female Surf Race, Masters medallists Malcolm Stevens (beach), Craig Burton and Tim Lepley (double ski) and David Hutchison (beach). Malcolm, Leigh and Hutch all medalled at World Titles in NZ in the beach events. Those guys just keeping on coming up with the 5 star performances! Congratulations also to finalist

Ruby Liptak (Iron Person). The Dalton brothers came up with a few more wins for TD at SUP and Board Riding Champs, and Steve racing at Molokai placing 1st in over 40s and 9th overall. Lachie Merchant was selected as the State Rep in the Aussies Youth Life Saving Shadow Squad. Boaties, whilst a smaller competitive team this season, still smashed it with major placings at all the big events, the U23 girls were impressive all season and won Gold at the National Short Course.

Shortly the Pool Rescue events will kick off at Marion, with a good group of members competing. Pool Rescue is a key focus of Surf next season as a big points winner for Australia at Worlds.

Thank you to Adam Luscombe for his hard work in organising the competition troops and really putting together a solid governance, process and organised program this year. Adam is handing over to Anthony Merchant who is vacating the Jnr Chair position to Michael Marling. A special thank you to Emma Martin who has managed the competition entries this season and is now taking a well deserved rest. We are looking to use technology better next season and will be asking our Members to “self service” entries next season.

Competition and Patrolling equipment is still in need of some cash injection. The Board has made some headways with new craft purchased via successful application of various grants. This season setting of operational budgets was completed in May so that the proper planning and purchasing of equipment can occur. The Club is also investing in jnr swimming with $1800 per month of swimming subsidies with an advanced swimming program, a stroke correction and masters swimming program in place. The Club recognizes that swimming forms the basis of many of the

At last year’s AGM, the membership awarded Life Membership to Lisa Harvey and Peter Schenscher was added to the Vice Presidents list. Congratulations to two very worthy recipients. A special Annual General meeting also introduced some major changes to the constitution, thank you to the Constitution Committee and members who supported these much needed changes.

At the Clubs Annual Awards of Excellence Dee Armstrong was awarded the Remeljej trophy, Adam Luscombe the President’s Award and Suzie Macauley the Most Outstanding Open member winning the return of the “Three T’s” trophy. The 3 T’s are Don Thomas, Ray Tredinnick and Ian (Totty) Tothill, who together have an aggregate period of service to the Club of over 200 years.

Finally on the financial front, Waxer will outline in more detail the large amount of capital expenditure this season across; new heating and cooling, extensive repairs, financial system upgrade, AV and sound equipment replacement, painting, fake wall to provide additional storage, new plants and furniture. The new lounges were a very generous donation from the Vine family, and it was with much celebration that the festering red couches went to rest at the Novar Gardens rubbish dump. Margo Vine was seen swigging champagne in a state of hysterical happiness!!

In the Bar and Bistro, profit margins were increased by reducing cost of goods – resourcing smarter and negotiation with suppliers. Rosters were reduced earlier than last season to contain labour costs as we hit the quieter end of the trading year. The Club receives generous concessions from our major supplier Lions who are investing dollars and benefits into the Club such as purchasing of balcony signage, and equipment such as umbrellas, eskies, seating etc that we re-use for raffles or as actual Club equipment.

In closing, I want to thank the army of helpers in the background organising, writing up posters, posting, rosters, finances, data entry and so on – the list really is enormous. Thank you to everyone for every effort as it is sincerely appreciated. Thank you to the Board and thank you to the retiring Board

disciplines in Surf, including craft and will continue to invest heavily in programs that will reach as many of our members across as many levels of competency as possible.

The current 4wd is reaching retirement – lets hope it makes it …. with a replacement second hand 4wd budgeted and planned ready for the patrolling season. The ATV replacement is planned in line with World’s either at a significantly reduced purchase price or other agreed contra arrangement for example. Gym equipment replacement is also out looked with a plan of attack and budget submitted by a small group of members. The next major purchase outside of actual Club equipment is solar panels which will be installed around November 2017.

In other areas around the Club, the Young Guns led by Anjie Collins held many social events, also attending the Anzac Vigil. Thank you to Anjie & Adam Luscombe for creating such a positive and respectful culture within these young adults.

Natasha Tunney and Noelene Lee gathered much media coverage with a spinal rescue off the jetty whilst on patrol. This resulted in fantastic media coverage around the dangers of jetty jumping and the associated injuries, often serious spinal and or broken limbs. With the landscape of our beach changing dramatically over the past few years, the water at the end of the jetty is as shallow as I have seen it for some time.

Our juniors also became overnight media stars, with Totally Wild filming the kids at training. The episode was shown on mainstream TV to a large audience giving great coverage for Glenelg as well as Surf Life Saving. The episode is available online and can be found by searching for - Series 24, Episode 72 of Totally Wild.

The Club made some quick cash through the raffle, awarding just under $5k cash to a visiting patron upstairs. This was held to take advantage of the 3,000 plus visitor’s for the Junior carnival and the Beach Polo which was moved to the same weekend. (no comment !!) The Boat Bar continued to be popular with the introduction of Corona cans a sellout!!Unfortunately, the Club’s annual Proclamation Day swim was cancelled due to horrific weather and water quality at Glenelg.

The recently returned Aquathon event was moved out of the Patawalonga over to Glenelg North beach and whilst reasonably well attended, the Club has advised it will not be supporting this event in future. Next year Glenelg has been allocated the Junior State titles as a pre event for council, surf and Glenelg to iron out any issues for the World Titles. The Club is now carefully selecting proposals to support events at Glenelg understanding that the effort from our members to provide lengthy hours of water cover can become too much.

members Vin Henderson (House) and Anthony Merchant (Junior Chair) for their years of service. Both of these members have worked through some tough times at the Club and certainly we are in a better position because of their efforts.

There is still much work to do with a focus on growth, further improving our competition numbers and results, managing capacity, capital works and planning and preparation for Junior States and then World’s.

The Board is constantly realigning its priorities as the Club moves and changes and some tasks are held over or simply not completed. Many hands make light work and the Club is always welcoming members to come forward and help out – every little effort helps!

I look forward to working with you again next season, together we can keep moving the Club forward, be successful in competition, maintain our strong Glenelg Club ethic and community values and finally being supported by a healthy financial base.

Yours faithfully,

Georgie ColeGeorgie ColePresident GSLSC

I wish to personally thank and congratulate all members and position holders of our club for their ongoing commitment and support to our management team, without your support in every section we would not be as successful as we are.

Our core responsibilities, of keeping Glenelg Beach safe for all those who wish to visit our special part of the world has once again run extremely smooth. Lots of positive feedback shows testament to Dee Armstrong and her team for the management of this arduous task of rostering, recording and managing our patrol teams throughout summer.

Competition has again kicked to another level across all areas and our youth has again continued to motivate our competition team to new levels. Congratulations to all section leaders and coaches and especially officials on a fantastic season and a 3rd place overall at the State Championships. Adam Luscombe has again been a solid driver of this commitment in the competition arena again this year and his dedication has certainly not gone unnoticed. A huge thanks to Adam and his team on such a great year both locally and Nationally.

On behalf of the Management Team at Glenelg I wish to thank every single member of our great club in their hard work and commitment. Glenelg SLSC a place where we have no hesitation in bringing our family and friends into an environment where we can all have fun and provide this vital service to all beach goers at Glenelg. For those who have chosen to take on particular roles at Glenelg SLSC your dedication is paramount to our organisation, we all need to continually encourage this level of participation across all levels to ensure our club continues to develop and provide this stable platform for our families for many years to come.

Treasurer - Clayton HayballThefinancialyearsfortheClubrunsfrom1May2016to30April2017.

The Final financial operating profits decreased from 2015/16. With the accounts combined the club made a combined loss of $19k, a decrease of $12k on 2015/16. The reason for overall decrease in Clubs profits were due to write down of the club fixed assets and increase in depreciation from asset purchases.

If you exclude depreciation the club overall profit was $98k compared to $64k in 2015/16, an improvement of $34k (see note 2 for Bar/Bistro improvement). This was due to better restructure of wages and COGS, continuous monitoring of the accounts, cashflows and regular meetings with Upstairs Management, Management and Finance Committees.

The club continued to use State Centre for its bookkeeping services of the Bar/ Bistro and ATO returns. This is running well with our returns, reconciliations and creditors/ debtors up to date.

The upstairs management continued to be more efficient. Wages and COGS were reduced without sacrificing service. This was evident in the warmer months as the profits from November to April improved vastly over same period in 2015/16.

During the early months the club had committed to purchasing a boat and new furniture. As timing would have it the club occurred repairs which included the till system, fob system and oven to name a few. During the year a loan of $50k was taken out for capital expenditure (boat and other fixtures) and the club used its profits for much needed maintenance. This was evident shown by increase in maintenance costs ($28k) and replacement of assets upstairs ($110k). It also explains the decrease in cash (note 1). Management would have not gone through with replacement of the assets if the club was not operating profitably.

The club started the 2016/17 year slowly as the sales were down during the winter months - cold winter and no heating did not help. Once it got warmer Bar/Bistro soon kicked into gear and the months of November to January improved dramatically – improved for the same time previous year, and the remaining months of February to April continued to be surplus.

The General account was surplus. This was due to fundraising such as BBQ’s, sponsorship, raffles and controlled spending on merchandise and Aussie titles expenses. The club still subsidised its competitors through Junior development, craft purchase and competition entries. Overall the general expenses remained similar to the previous year.

Going forward the club is setting itself up to improve this next coming year. The Upstairs management have been working hard keeping the club busy during the quiet months. There are still capital items needed but the list this year is half in value of the same time last year. With new heating, less capital needed and less expected repairs / maintenance the coming year, the club is in a good position to improve its profits and cash position from 2016/17.

I personally would like to thank the following members and staff:1. Registrar and supporting teams for collecting membership fees each Saturday, 2. Dee Armstrong and Sarah Tidswell for help with stock control purchase and Australian Titles entries. 3. Finance Committee members consisting of Georgina Cole, Fernando Camacho, Mick Billing and Brenton Quimby, 4. Management Committee including Denis Wooldridge and Vince Henderson, 5. Sue Mitchell and Katerina from SLSSA 6. Shane Harris for his expert advice for the new heating system, his services gave us an efficient system for the fraction of the original quotes7. Peter Armstrong, Neil Binns and Doug Hayball for the repairs and maintenance on the club8. Upstairs Management of Frank, Charles and Kate. I would like to Georgina Cole and Frank Maunder for their utmost support and advice.

Kind Regards

Constitution Committee Report- Peter Marshman Manypeakbodieswithaffiliatedmemberclubsprepareandencouragetheadoptionofa‘model’Constitutionforthesakeofmanagementconsistencyovertheentireorganization.SurfLifesavingSA(SLSSA)isnoexception.Afterseveralyearsofdevelopment,andinconsultationwithmemberClubs,SLSSAapprovedandpromulgatedsuchadocumentin2015.

Whilst there was no subsequent demand that member Clubs adopt the model as a pre-requisite to continued affiliation, SLSSA did encourage active consideration of such a course. After a thorough examination of the model, the Constitution Committee subsequently recommended to Club Management that the Glenelg SLSC Constitution should be rewritten as a ‘hybrid’, i.e. it would include many of the administrative and governance clauses contained in the SLSSA model, but retain all those sections of the current GSLSC Constitution which resulted from historical membership decisions and which were unique to our Club. This recommendation was accepted, and over the next two years a draft document was prepared by the members of the Constitution Committee (Peter Marshman, Barrie Wooldridge, Ray Tredinnick). Following internal consultation and refinement, the draft new GSLSC Constitution was endorsed by Club Management in early 2017.

At a Special General Meeting of members held on 17 March 2017, this new Club Constitution was formally adopted.Features include the adoption of many of the administrative clauses of the model Constitution and a revision of other clauses to reflect the demands of improved governance and recent developments in Club management needs. Some of the more significant of these include:• Definitions.• Interpretation.• ObjectsandpowersofGSLSC.• Affiliationclauses.• Adoptionoftheterm‘TheBoard’inplaceof ‘Management Committee’ to reflect modern terminology. Current membership will remain unaltered (until the next AGM).• ExpansionoftheresponsibilityofTheBoardto now formally include the ‘business operations’ of the Club.• FormalexclusionofremunerationforBoard members.• Stricterauditorappointmentrequirements.• Increasedmembershipcategories.

• Provisionofamoreformalapproachto disqualification, removal and resignation of officers.• ExpansionofthemethodsbywhichNoticesof Meetings are deemed to have been given to members to reflect increasing use of technology.• Requirementforanymemberappointedtoa casual vacancy to now formally nominate for re- election.• Increasefrom10to15yearsofserviceforthe two (2) Board appointed members on the Life Membership Committee.• ReductionoftheDisciplinaryCommitteefrom5to 3 members and removal of Board members (who may then be required to adjudicate on an appeal).

Unique to the GSLSC Constitution has been the creation and formalization of the membership, role and powers of the ‘Financial Oversight Committee’, which recognises the increasing demands of effective management of the Club’s significant and expanding business operations. This Committee replaces that which was previously known as the Finance Committee.

A revision of all Club By-laws which have been affected by the alterations to the Constitution is currently being undertaken.

Finally, improvements to the layout and spacing of the Clauses, and the development of a more detailed contents section, have been incorporated into the new Constitution to assist members navigate their way through what is an unavoidably lengthy, detailed and sometimes complex document.

We had 5 U14’s represent Glenelg in the State Development Squad who travelled to Queensland. Nicholas Brooks, Ruby Liptak, Jed Ffench, Lucy Derbyshire and Eloise Merchant competed extremely well for S.A. Unfortunately Under 13’s were given the opportunity to compete in the state team this year, but I’m sure we would have had the likes of Harvey Luscombe selected if they had.

Our junior club captains this year were Mackenzie Eggelstone and Harvey Luscombe and vice captains Abbey Forbes and Josh Warne. Our Under 14's all achieved their SRC certificates, thanks to Anjie Collins – our young guns coordinator, Jeff Collins and Suzie MacAuley and her team who made sure they were all well versed on the finer points of Surf Life Saving. The importance of this program is paramount to the retention and up skilling of our future Surf Life Savers. It’s important we continue to support and fund this area. Our U13's say goodbye to the Juniors. We had a fantastic group of young men and women who have come through the junior ranks this year, supported by Adam Luscombe, Rob Warne, Amanda De Ieso and Kendall Egglestone. We look forward to seeing all this years under 13’s around the club for many years to come, whether competing or patrolling the beach.

Competition training programs have again been well supported by the kids and parents. Thanks to those kids who were prepared to come out for extra sessions to improve their ability and getting the most out of our great sport. We had most areas of competition covered with specialised coaching.

Saturday Training sessions continued to teach our kids surf life saving skills and more importantly to have fun doing it. We lost a few sessions this year to a number of shark sightings and poor weather conditions but generally it panned out perfectly. We need to promote the Junior Nipper program through local schools and friends of current nippers, to increase numbers for 2017/18.Thanks to the Age Group Leaders fort their great work with all of our Age Groups. You are working on the front line of creating a culture at our club and I know your efforts are

greatly appreciated by the kids and parents. Our continued focus on the three key areas of the Juniors being, Fun, Education & Training is the way to keep increasing our junior membership.

Junior States this season was held at Semaphore. Our team of around 90 kids competed extremely well for the weekend and gave us all a display of their skills and abilities. For me the highlight was the silver medal for our Junior March Past Team and the pure joy on Gordon and the kid’s faces when the result was announced, backing up on the previous years gold.

We had some fantastic results across all age groups. Our display of fun, excitement and camaraderie is something lots of clubs are jealous of. Well done and congratulations to all those who competed for Glenelg this year. We hope your experiences were both rewarding and challenging. We finished in seventh place and drop from the previous few years. Our team’s performance against much larger clubs was inspirational to be a part of. We all need to stay committed to the programs offered to ensure we remain competitive and at a high standard. We have put some programs in place to return our Junior’s back into the top 3 over the next few years.

Harvey Luscombe won the CC Scott Most Conscientious Award and Josh Warne winning the Yvonne Tidswell Community Award.

Our nippers were all supplied with training tops this year thanks to the following sponsors: Chi Hair and Beauty, Dr. Jones and Partners, SA Waste Management, Linkup Construction Survey, Loan Market, Stamford Grand and Kevin Smith.New age and area flags were also supplied thanks to Matt Liptak and Orthopeadics SA.

In closing I would like to thank my committee for their hard work this season in making sure all areas of our club ran smoothly and safely. Our achievements each year depend on these people to stand up and be counted when things need to be done. Our wider community being water cover, IRB drivers, Age Group Leaders, Coaches and members who are happy to assist where possible has been very rewarding over the past few years. Thanks once again to Leanne Rouvray for her fantastic photos.

Our committee this year:Emma Martin, secretary. Justin Ganley, vice president/ competition, Nev Brooks and Simon DeJong, Sponsorship, Kirstin Tocker AGL Rep., Jarred Schenscher Water Cover, Noelene Lee, Steve Dalton and Michael Marling.

I will not be continuing as Junior Chairperson, but we have a new and exciting person to fill the position. I will still be involved in the club in the seniors but will still assist the juniors when needed, whether as water cover or coaching. I have been involved with the Junior program for over 10 years and encourage all to get involved, as the more you put in the more you will get out.

Thank you to all those who have supported me in this role.

Upstairs running like clockwork helping both committees to keep downstairs running smoothly, and at the high level we expect from ourselves. Our surf club is kept alive by volunteers and all the countless hours they put in, unfortunately all these hours can not be recognised here but some notable mentions for these season include, all of our instructors, our young guns, our athletes both young and old and older and of course our patrols. Not forgetting everyone that also put countless dollars over the bar on the weekends in "support".

Of course one great highlight is the boat shed bar that bay all accounts should be around a lot more.

This season had some club leaders that stepped up and inspired many others. People that went above their roles to excel for the club. Exceptional efforts from people such as:

• AdamLuscombeandNicoleArmstrongfortheir sensational efforts throughout the year and their work at states, along with Emma Martin entering all our competitors even those who forgot.

• EthanRumpandWillSchetterforsteppingupto assist with coaching of our U/15-open athletes and empowering the team spirit we recaptured last year.• OurcompetitorsbothnewtoGlenelgand/ornew to seniors, who definitely stood out as the future leaders with their fantastic team spirit.• ourathletesselectedinnational, stateand development teams.

Patrols again were etched away at by our team of Dee, Georgina and Brodie. All members and patrol captains did a superior job keeping the beach safe. With some member gaining a local celeb status for some of the events that did occur.

Make sure you put in the hours over winter, in the gym, on and in the water, in whatever you decide. These hours will show when the season commences, for you and for Glenelg as a club.

So, fingers crossed the only heat at this year’s AGM will come from our newly installed system!

The list above presents several of our main achievements throughout the last 12 months and there are numerous others not listed. We have plans to continue to evolve the Surf Club restaurant and bar with new and improved events and changing menus.

We would especially like to thank the efforts of Kate Gambell and Head Chef Charles Sutton. Kate has taken over the difficult and at often times, stressful role of functions coordinator in her stride and has made the position her own. Charles and his team continue to present fantastic meals at affordable prices with an ever-evolving menu with new and exciting food offerings.

We would also like to thank our many volunteers who continue to assist our paid staff to increase efficiencies and reduce our costs. We continue to seek the support of our members to help support, grow and promote the business.

This year is my last year as House Manager and thanks largely to the efforts of Frank Maunder and his team, I would like to think that the Surf Club has become a better place to relax, appreciate the views, meet friends, enjoy the awesome food and have a beer or wine or few!

Cheers!

This season the 13 Patrol teams, with an average of 14 people per patrol, supervised over 69,000 beach goers plus additional visitors to Glenelg which were recorded at over 450,000 people into the area (Holdfast Bay visitor numbers).

Nearly 4,800 patrol hours were recorded, with 19 rescues predominantly by board (10) and IRB (5), with 1 resuscitation. There was a lot of media coverage this year involving jetty jumping with a number of serious injuries with compound

rescues being performed early and mid morning. At Glenelg there were 2 rescues performed between 9 and 10am. Net season the Club will again participate in these morning patrols and begin to build some flexible options for our patrolling members.

Congratulations to the patrol team of the year which is nominated by Patrol Captains as performing above and beyond on patrol:

Grace Russo Jared Schensher Shane Limmer Danny Hall Anna Jackson Tom O’Shaunessey Steve Dumican Chris Maylin Sarah Borrie Nicole Armstrong Will Shanks Josh WarneTodd Smith Dylan Mitchell

The most patrol hours performed on the beach was awarded to Jared Schenscher who completed 194 hours. Jared was also awarded the prestigious Most Outstanding Patrol Member.

Thank you to the individual efforts that really keep the patrol wheels moving, the job is easier because we have so many contributing what they can to keep our beaches safe.

Finally, technology has made life a litter easier with SMS reminders out to the members and we are told that Surf will allow hours to be entered directly (no more books!) as well as introducing more sensible requirements around earning patrol hours for state titles and simplifying proficiency.

fractures, broken limbs and a very lucky gentleman who avoided serious paralysing injuries if not for the sensible actions of Noelene Lee and Natasha Tunney.

Reporting statistics are always reliant on the patrol captains and the team, combined with individual interpretation, so each year we can see large variances in different areas. This year First aid performed was 38 times, compared to 140 times last year but the preventative actions leaped back into more normalised numbers of 672, compared to 93 last year and over a 1000 the year before.

The hot weather saw a high volume of jelly fish in the water, and an explosion of blue crabs nipping at our toes!

There were a number of shark alarms, with our neighbouring beaches mainly suffering from water clearances due to sightings close to our metro shoreline.

Special thanks to the Patrol Captains, Vice Captains, IRB drivers and crew, First Aid officers and all other patrolling members – what a dedicated group of life savers in what are sometimes terrible conditions.

It was extremely pleasing this year to see that nearly all patrolling members who couldn’t attend their rostered patrol arranged a substitute. Well done to all.

GSLSC also participated in extra morning patrols, participating in a trial with a number of other clubs. This was due to a number of

The 2016/17 saw the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club Competition, really improve. It then was able to start the Board and Ski Series with momentum and place itself ‘amongst the action at the pointy end of the season’ at State and Australian Titles. A ‘high level’ summary of the fantastic Club results are;

• 3rdplaceatStatesintheOpen,• 7thPlaceatStatesintheMasters,• winning62medalsatStatesSeniors,• winning12medalsatStateMasters,• winning100top6placesatStateSeniors,• winning37top6placesatStateMaster,• 8StateRepresentatives(SiennaRouvray,Ruby Liptak, Jed Ffrench Nicholas Brookes Lachlan Eloise Merchant, Lucy Derbyshire, Jack Martin). We also had a number of young athletes withdraw or narrowly miss this team including Lachie Merchant, Thomas Excel, Gabe Mangelsdorf, Gabby Carr, Fletcher Luscombe and Josh Giles. • winning2GoldAustralianMedals,• winning1silverAustralianMedals• AnumberofAustralianFinalistsandmultiple Australian Semi/ Quarter - finalist,• DuetoaclashofeventswithAustralianSwimming a smaller than usual competing Touring attended Aussies – however their impact was awesome,• AsolidperformanceinthePoolRescueStateswith 2nd place. Winning 15 Gold, 9 Silver and 5 Bronze and 62 Top 6 finishes and • AmassiveeffortattheSASLSSABoardriding Championships with 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze and 11 Top 6 finishes from 7 events.

These results are significant as they took a huge amount of work by many Club Members. The work to keep the results of last year ‘continual improve’ has been massive. Club members such as Peter Tidswell, Anthony Merchant, Shaun Armstrong, Emma Martin, Michael Baker and all Section leaders/ Nickole Armstrong the Club met with, newly acquired Club Member, Michael Baker to develop a set of

goals and aims to improve the Competition Area. The goals were to;• ImprovetheClub’sStateTitleSeniorpositionby 10% and place 3rd,• ImprovetheClub’sStateTitleSeniorpositionpoint score by over 40% in order to capture 3rd,• Improvethenumberoffemalecompetitors,• ContinualimprovetheTrainingenvironmentforall members,• TobeaCompetitionClubofchoiceasopposedto loosing talented athletes,• ToprovideastrongtransitionofJunior’s(U/14)into Senior’s,• TakeextracareoftheelevatedU/14agegroupinto this transition,• Improvecommunication, systemsandselection criteria,• Furtherdevelopapositiveculturetotrainingand competition,• FurtherdevelopapresenceforallCompetitorson patrol and around the Club,• FurtherdevelopandnurtureallCompetitors,• ImproveoptionsandinclusionofGSLSC Memberships to experience the benefits of Surf Sports,• FurtherdevelopaSeniorcompetitionpresenceat the weekly Club Swim,• EnsuretheBoatsectionisincludedinalldecisions and their progress is mapped at ASR, National and State level,• FurtherdevelopaClubChampionshipsDaythat embraced the whole Club on one or two days providing encouragement, inclusion and role models for all and• Createafutureframeworkforparticipation, developing talent and depth for Glenelg Surf Club Surf Sports for all competitors.

The following tables illustrates the Club Progression results at Senior’s and Masters. Points are inclusive of Boats.

The effort to develop a strong Seniors group has yielded some great results. The following graphs show the Club progression, medal break downs and success of a strong program.

Whilst the seniors have seen strong results our Masters dropped some this year. However what needs to be pragmatically reviewed here is;• 15-18fewerMasterscompetedthisyeardueto date changes and other clashes.• 2016/17hadseenafouryearhighincompetitors.• The2016/17competitorsscoredmorepointsper head than the 2013/14 Masters where GSLSC

finished 6th.• Acoupleofkeyclubpersonallosesintheoff season.• Adeclineincompetitorsmeantahugedeclinein Teams point. This resulted in a drop in medals and Top 6 placing’s.

The medal count review over the last few years illustrates a similar improvement for Masters until this year. It will not take much to improve these results with only a few points 152 points to make up to 5th. With a few more competitors (male and female), designated training sessions and a concerted effort much can happen.

Whilst the results have shown a strong improvement the future sustainable success will depend on lessons learnt from season 2016/17 (successes and where we can improve)Some of the things we have learnt from the Carnival Season were;

• Theneedforevenmorefemalecompetitors,• Acompetitorhandbooktooutlineexpectations, communication, code of conduct etc,• Aneedtoworkonexpectationsandcommunication of all,• TheneedforanimprovedcommunicationonTeam selections (especially around States),• AtargetedapproachtoEventsandcompetitor management,• AbiggerpresenceofSeniorsintheweeklyClubswim,• Non-coreLifeSavingsEventslikeR&R,FirstAid and Champion Life Saver to be targeted for non-Surf Sport members, especially when they will be in next year’s Senior point score,• AviewtosuccessatAussiesthatsupportsall groups, level of competitor and contributions that all Club members can make.

Ski Captain - Will Schetter

Somegreatracingbyallthroughouttheentireseason,withhugeamountofenthusiasmthroughoutthesection,competitorsandtheclub.Wewelcomedafewmoreawesomeyoungpaddlersintotheclubwhoonceagainincreasednumbersatourtrainingsandimprovedusall.

This year we have been running a variety of sessions throughout the week with skis on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings trained by Craig Burton and also on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with great numbers at all sessions and our two training groups coming together for Saturday mornings to work and learn from the wealth of knowledge we have available to us. It was also great to see a lot of paddlers coming out to other events such as the Ocean Series, 8@8 and board/ ski series. These are the events that will give you the extra drive throughout the season.

All the hard yards through the year showed at state titles as well. Whilst many paddlers individually might not have hit their goals our relays and teams showed our strengths. We had many teams that all preformed extremely well with a mix of our older and younger paddlers combining.

We will be training throughout winter again this year on the Pat, and I encourage everyone compete in the winter racing events. These will set up your season and help you to achieve the goals you set for yourselves. Hope to see you all out there!

JRB- Jet Resuce Boat Report

- Noelene LeeTheJetRescueBoatserviceisinvolvedinextendingSLSSA’spatrolareasandtoassistclubs,PoliceandotherEmergencyServicesinwhateverwaytheyareneeded,fromsearchingforalostchildalongthebeachandwater’sedge,andproviding1staidalongunpatrolledsectionsofthecoast,towingofdisabledcraftbacktotheirplaceoflaunch,assistingtheHelicopterinherdingsharksouttosea,rightuptobeingcalleduponbySAPOLona24/7basistosearchformissingpeopleandboatsthathavebeenreportedmissing,andsearchesthatcontinueforacoupleofdays.

To be considered for joining the group you must have at a minimum Bronze Medallion, IRB Crew, IRB Drivers (or obtain this award before going on the JRB Drivers qualification), Snr First aid, ART, Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue (preferred but must be willing to obtain), At least on P Plates (can start training on L’s but won’t be qualified until P Plates)The training consists of a season as a trainee crew, with official training and assessment conducted over the winter off season. This is followed by a season of crew duties before commencing driver training in the same manner as your crew training. Yes it can take a minimum of 3 years before you gain your drivers award but you will also be in charge of a $250,000 worth of equipment and also the safety of your crew, so the driver’s award is not handed out on a silver platter.

The people in the group range from all aspects of Lifesaving and cover all ages from 18 to 56 (current crew), we like to have a bit of fun both on the water and off but when the time comes to do the job or go out in the conditions that we sometimes have to, the fun goes out the door and it is all business until we get back to the shed. The boats cover an area of some 90 Nautical Miles in length from North Haven through to Normanville, as well as occasionally heading down to the South Coast covering from Victor Harbour around to the Murry Mouth. It can be rough out there and there is nothing gentle about a JRB going flat out in rough water to get to a situation, or out at 3am on a cold winter’s morning. But then there are the days where it is better to be out in the boat than sitting on the beach. We regularly do exercises with other Emergency services like SAPOL, Sea Rescue, Coast Guard, and Aviation Rescue, as well as internal training with the RWC’s and Helicopter.

If you are interested in joining the crew keep a look out for the Expression of interest from SLSSA on their web site, or

get in contact with one of the qualified crew in our club who can try and get you out on a patrol so you can see what it is like and if it is for you.

Helicopter gets all the lime light and profile, Jet Ski everyone wants to do because it’s cool, Jet Rescue boat does all the work!

The season brought a combination of both first aid and rescue incidents, seeing 17 rescues being performed, multiple ambulance attendances and approximately 670 preventative actions taking place over the season. I was kept busy throughout the season restocking the large amount of first aid and oxygen equipment utilised in each and every first aid incident.

There were a couple of particular incidents that stand out as really highlighting the Glenelg surf club spirit, where comradery, leadership, determination and most importantly teamwork were displayed. These were:

• Thejettyjumperwhosustainedlife threatening spinal injuries, where patrol 3 worked together as a team to get the spinal immobilized patient safely out of the water, stabilized and treated until the ambulance arrived.

• Ajuniorcarnivalatthestartofthisyearwhere well over 100 juniors were treated for jelly fish stings in a space of 2- 3 hours, really stretching and challenging the limited resources and equipment we had on the day.

I would like to thank each and every club member who assisted in any of the first aid incidents throughout the season and in particular Brodie Batty who assisted me with maintaining and stocking the equipment. I look forward to the fast approaching 2017/18 season and aim to hopefully have a team or two compete in the first aid championships.

Maintaining the patrol ute, ATV and trailers has gone fairly smoothly even though some items are now aging a bit. New special duck trailer rims has sorted the deflating tyres problem. Thanks to those members who take time to clean and wash out the ute and atv as it does enhance the life span of these vehicles.

Upstairs has been a busy year, starting with the building of the false wall to allow an upstairs storage area for tables and chairs. Many thanks to Jack and James for the carpentry and gyprocking, Ffrenchy for flushing and Doug and Neil for painting. Jobs continued upstairs with Frank being a hard task master. Special thanks to my offsiders Doug and Neil who manufactured all the surfboards that are used as our dining table numbers with Judi helping with the special paint job. The team also assembled the furniture, replaced lights, new draw cupboard and the pallet furniture and bar which is getting a great deal of use in the Boat Bar.

One of the larger tasks was rescuing the roller doors down stairs. Thanks to Kev Smith for providing and manning the high pressure cleaner letting us blast most of the crap off the doors. Then it was up to the painting team of Doug, Judi and Neil to bring them up like new – well nearly.

Thanks to all those who helped anywhere with maintenance.

Without the assistance and support of the Management committee, we would not be able to spend Mondays and Thursdays 7 - 8pm improving our skills. For much of the season, we have been fortunate to have free sessions for members. Although this may change in the near future, many of us have been around well and truly before this was implemented.

The long suffering coach, Phil Gardner, was not able to continue part-way through the season. His years of dedication to the squad were tremendous and we have a plan to show our appreciation with a gathering when we manage it.

It is the bond and joy we enjoy during our swim, each taking a part in designing the set and ensuring we are pushed and supported. Our plan is to continue with this throughout the Winter and hope to entice other members to join us for an opportunity to maintain (or redevelop) fitness and swimming skills.

Our only expenditure is lane hire. Everyone is in charge of bringing their own equipment. Swimming naked is frowned upon…

Young Guns Season Report

The season was filled with our Young Guns gaining qualifications that promote their future careers as Surf Life Savers, from gaining Surf Rescue Certificates, Bronze Medallions, IRB Crew qualifications and various others throughout the season. These young adults also backed up these qualifications by attending numerous patrols, helping at BBQ’s and other club functions, assisting with volunteer glassy duties and helping to fund raise.

We had a range of Saturday sessions that had high attendance, hopefully in future the Young Guns will design the program for these sessions so that they can gain even more from their attendance. Unfortunately, with trial comes error, and some sessions were not quite as beneficial as first hoped and camps fell to the wayside slightly. However, these aspects will have more focus placed on them over the upcoming season. We did have a range of successful social outings including a few surf sessions, a night out at the Big Bash League Cricket and a few milkshakes along the way.

Finally, some outstanding competition results and commitments to training were also displayed through the season so congratulations on the competitive front as well.Well done Young Guns, Can’t wait to see you all on the beach very soon!

The Glenelg Beach Team

- Ollie PattersonTheGlenelgbeachteamhadastrong2016/17season.Withthemostcompetitorsatthisyearsstatetitlesthanwe’veseeninsometime,Glenelgcameawaywithgreatresultsonthebeach.Crucially,itwastheyoungeragegroupsthatreallystoodup.

The youth girls team, comprising of Sienna Rouvray, Ruby Liptak, Summer Betterman and Holly Tidswell, in particular, were fantastic, claiming gold in their relay and also posting stellar individual performances. Jacob Tidswell also ran well at the state titles, claiming a silver medal in the 2km, while the rest of the youth beach team did our club proud in their tremendous efforts. In our senior age groups, the blisteringly fast Glenelg faithful Matt Camacho defeated his own demon - in the form of an injury- plagued hamstring - and consolidated his spot as one of (if not the fastest) beach sprinter in SA. The legendary U19 relay team’s final runner smashed the U19 individual sprint, emphatically claiming gold, while narrowly missing out on the double with an agonisingly close finish in the Open sprint, coming away with silver.

The stars of the beach team this season, however, was the plethora of youth competitors, as their great results and strength in numbers is a positive sign for the future of our great clubs beach team. Looking forward, our goal for the future is to refine the abundance of natural talent that our young team obviously possesses, and to shape the Glenelg beach team into an even stronger, even more competitive team than we already are.

We will also endeavour to recruit new members so that Glenelg is consistently well-represented at carnivals and can strive to be in the top echelon of beach teams not only SA, but the whole country.

Some of the standouts this year included; Ruby Liptak, Jed French, Nicholas Brookes, Oliver Martin, Jack Martin and Will Schetter. Also, many more fantastic efforts in both individual and team races.

We continued to give Leighton Clark good business this year with board repairs. One board did take a detour into Victoria after the state team trip in NSW, however was returned after we had already disowned it. Some interesting tactics by Jacob in the board rounds at states, saw him moon the entire field, this unfortunately didn’t pay off.

Thank you to all that helped over the season and everyone that continues to make this club great.

IRB Captain - Jared Schenscher

IthasbeenabusyyearfortheIRBsection,witheveryweekendrequiringourserviceforpatrol,juniorwater-cover,eventcoverorcompetition.Therehavebeenseveralkeyclubmemberswhohaveprovidedinnumerablehoursintheduckandtheireffortsaregreatlyappreciated. Our water-cover responsibilities included Senior and Junior state qualifying, the annual Cold Plunge for Rotary, Christmas swim, two Masters swims, a Triathlon and weekend patrols (including nippers).

Our competitors brought skill and dedication to our events. This is especially important because our competitions run in the off-season – a cold and wet way to spend your Winter (from April to July). A sincere thank you to all of those who competed in States as well as the Southern States championship. We were able to manage two medals at States; Bronze (Masters Women Straight rescue: Natasha Tunney and Noelene Lee) and Silver (Open Women Mass rescue: Edwina Jackson and Emma Irving). The men also had great result, managing to be finalists in both Masters and Opens (Masters Men: Dave O’Shaughnessy and Shane Harris as well as Open Men: Jacob and Mitch Harvey). Southern States championship competition was held in Robe, which included several car shenanigans as well as promising results with several finalists. Thank you to all of the partners and family members who watched in the cold. The biggest thank you, of course, goes to Noelene Lee, who towed the trailer for every event.

16 crew were trained. No drivers were trained due to the overwhelming demand for our services as water cover. Several members have expressed an interest in driver training in the off-season. We have also made a commitment to undertaking a female-only crew training session. It is exciting to see many of the young members keen to learn about IRBs. After a year away from competition this year, we hope that the time to train new members will benefit our competition results next year.

Noelene Lee, given her diverse and ongoing dedication to the section truly deserved her recognition as ‘Most Outstanding’. Natasha Tunney’s efforts warranted her being awarded ‘Most Improved’.

As many of you may be aware, our IRBs are well-worn and have required some TLC. Many of them are overdue for replacement and have been a significant cost for repairs.

The forced retirement of motor 7 has left us one motor down for the majority of the year. The repair quote is significantly more than the cost of a new motor. We will be speaking with the management committee about how best to go forward, with the hope that we can provide good quality IRBs for the safety of the public as well as making sure we can continue to be competitive.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my second year as IRB captain and would like to thank everyone who supported me and the rest of our members both during and out of season. I look forward to next year.

We also introduced some changes to the process for proficiencies and although initially some were sceptical we feel it was successful and a much more manageable process for all involved.

I would like to thank all the members of our team who work throughout the season to ensure that our members are proficient so they can patrol and compete and also willingly put their hands up to train squads for Bronze, SRC, ARTC, IRB. These members not only give their time to perform this role they also need to attend training sessions to ensure they themselves are current and proficient at a state level and keep abreast of any changes that may be introduced during the season. A special thanks also to Judi Hayball who volunteered and efficiently took on the role of entering all the proficiencies into surfguard. This was a big job this year as Surf SA introduced a more stringent process.

Our Youth team had a great competition with the 12 strong team, we had very hot team of 7 girls across the beach and water arenas. They were unlucky in the beach relay but their performance in the water was impressive and highlights the success of our competition program. Our team of 5 boys done extremely well getting through semis and finals. The kids had a fantastic trip away on the Gold Coast, this group of U15 kids have presented themselves on and off the beach as a team kids that most clubs would be jealous.

Our highlight of the Youth Aussies (& Senior) was the U14 Female Surf Swim Final where Lucy Derbyshire finished 2nd overall, winning a National Individual Swim Medal. Well deserved Lucy, on such an outstanding Performance.

Our Youth Team was managed by Anjie Collins, Shaun Armstrong & Ethan Rump. Very proud of our youth leaders for their great coaching and personal development of the kids on and off the water. Thanks to the parents for assisting throughout the competition and post activities, appreciate it.

Our Masters Team consisted of 10 competitors on both Beach and Ski Areas. Our champion masters beach team was again picking up Gold medals in the sprints and flags once again, but unfortunately let a gold medal slip through their fingers in the beach relay. Beach Team consisted of Leigh Bowbridge, David Hutchinson, Malcolm Stevens (Gold in 2 km run), Shane Daw and Craig Burton.

Our Masters Ski Team consisting of The Dalton Brothers, Michael Dobie, Tim Lepley, Craig Burton and Shane Daw. Silver in the Double with Burton & Lepley and the brothers just missing a medal after leading most of the way. Both teams also made the finals in the Ski Relay.

Seniors Competition ran for one day in good conditions, our Water Team consisting of Jack Martin, Will Schetter and Ethan Rumpalicious. They managed to get through a few rounds that day before the entire event was cancelled.

Our U23 Womens Boat Crew, unfortunately didn’t get to compete before the cancellation, unlucky for these girls her were very keen to give a good crack this year. Next Year??

We also had our crack March Past Team there again this year, but unfortunately not breaking into medal contention this year and finishing 17th. Thanks to all those who have helped with the Team Managing Roles across all three areas, and look forward to planning next years assault on Perth W.A.

Thanks to our equipment transport team for towing gear all the way to QLD, Dave Earl, Mike Schetter and Steve Crouch. Thanks for delivering and returning our gear safely and on time.

My crew the “Towers” consisted of Anna, Tash, & Jaymi (replaced by Jes Ellen) competed in Reserve grade and had a good year. Angie Collins also raced with us, often at short notice. Thank you Our Open Men also saw a crew change, with powerhouse Brenden also heading to the ACT and Nathan Gillard sustaining an injury. It’s great to see Lincoln & Whitey taking the reins & putting a big focus on rebuilding this crew. 2 Clunes are better than 1 apparently, and now they’ve got the hang of wedging their sluggos up, both Darren & Peter are hard at work to develop their rowing skills

Glenelg’s U23 girls crew the “Sirens” seem to have been at the top of their division for years! Georgia Sumner came in to fill Anna Jackson’s seat, who had a Birthday and had to go up. Emma, Edwina, Ellie & Georgia, together with Pete as sweep, earned the honour of SA State Crew representatives. In the second half of the season they often competed in the Open class for extra competition and experience (knocking off, many of the top Open crews). The pinnacle of their season was winning the ASRL National Short Course championship in Manly amongst a field of very classy crews.

New Boat – Hercules 1Thanks to the many members who rallied their families, contacts and local businesses to provide the sponsorship funds, and a massive thanks to our club for supporting and part-funding the purchase also. I wish to thank all of our sponsors for their confidence and support of our club, such a big-ticket item simply wouldn’t have been possible without their support.

Hercules 1 (affectionately known as ‘Strapper’), was christened by Yvonne Tidswell in January. With her long club and service history, not to mention being the matriarch of many Tidswell family members, Yvonne & the late Doug are

Boat Captain Gina Bell /Natasha Tunney

incredibly dear to our boat section and she was the logical choice to crack the champagne over the bow when the time came.

I’d also like to acknowledge Natasha Tunney and the momentous job she did behind the scenes to pull everything together and coordinate the funding and purchase.

DeparturesTwo of our favourite members headed to the ACT, with Brendon ‘Corporal Punishment’ Matthews and Jaymi ‘Fancy’ Bowyer leaving SA to fulfil military positions in January. In the time they’d been at the Club, both cemented their positions as great friends and trainers, as well as being valued members of the Open Mens & Reserve Women’s crews. Brendon & Jaymi ran the boat section’s weekly ‘Wednesday Weights’ sessions, keeping the group humoured by the ridiculous costume requirements, and motivated and exhausted with their varied, challenging and often military-inspired sessions. Happy days!

First Female accredited sweepWe couldn’t be prouder of our own Anjie Collins who this season became the first female to gain her accreditation as a sweep in SA. ‘Anje’ put a tonne of effort into getting as many hours at the helm as possible, willingly sweeping most Glenelg crews in training and competition, as well helping out a mens crew at Somerton (apparently she doesn’t need sleep!). We look forward to watching Anjie continuing her successful journey towards becoming a very accomplished and highly respected sweep in the coming years.

Robe Trip –3 Glenelg crews packed their bags to compete in near perfect 3-4 ft Long Beach swell in December. Darren ‘Clunesey’ Clunes had his first taste of surf conditions and lived to tell the tale. Our competitors, families, partners and support crew also managed to fit in the obligatory ‘Robe Weekend’ 4WD’ing expeditions that’s become an integral part of this great weekend.

Masters StatesIt was disappointing to only have 2 crews competing at Masters States this year. For the 140 women (myself, Tash, Jaymi & ‘El Presidente’ Georgie Cole, with Greg Daw sweeping, and the 220 Women Cath McCarthy, Sue Higgins, Sue Macauley, Lisa Harvey & Sara Dumican, swept by Anjie Collins, State Titles was a successful day regardless, with

both crews wearing medals home. It’s always fun to have the more senior ladies competing, and listening to their hilarious banter about the frightening conditions etc. Anjie made sure they got out & in safely. This particular group swept by Geoff Norris, get together every Sunday morning without fail for a session on the water, followed by a session of lattes. Both are of equal importance!

State TitlesJust when the weather Gods finally looked to be on a good warm streak, they seriously chucked the worst day imaginable on for Boat State Titles. Rain, horrific winds and pretty damn ugly surf conditions stayed around from start to finish. We broke a few sweep oars, but hands down Play of the Day when to Pete Tidwell who after having another sweep oar break in two, no longer had any steering. He dived out of the boat & clung to the stern & got dragged through the gnarly surf in an effort to steer the U23 girls home. The crowd on the beach went wild!Hats off to our newly put together Open Mens crew, Reserve & U23 ladies for donning the helmets & heading out into those conditions. Our under 23s walked away with a Bronze medal.

AwardsCongratulations to Darren Clunes who was this year’s Most Improved Rower. Darren has spent many an hour on the ergos this season honing his skills and fitness. Never one to say no, he also hopped in with most crews as a fill in and even raced the south port classic filling in for our women’s crew. Well done Darren

The Glen Tidswell memorial Trophy was this year awarded to Gina Bell. Gina has stepped up to the plate this year and taken a lead role in coordinating and running the boat section. From coaching to hosting sponsors functions there’s nothing “Princess Gina” can’t do. Thank you Gina for your support and hard work.

Sweeps Rock!Surfboat rowing just isn’t possible without a sweep. Pete Tidswell is known not only in South Australia, but also around the country as one of the best. There’s no conditions he won’t go out in, the bigger the better – nothing phases him. In addition to sweeping crews during the week for training, Pete also swept most Glenelg crews at Carnivals this season, jumping from one crew to the next for hours on

end. Pete, from all of us a massive thank you. Pete was ably supported by brother, Charlie Tidswell who looked after all my crew’s early morning sessions, Greg Dawe who often looked after the Open Men, Geoff Norris and Anjie Collins. Thanks sweeps from the whole section – you rock!

Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the members who have undertaken additional roles at the club in addition to their training/rowing - whether as club officers, training officers, coaches, bar and bistro staff, voluntary glassies, patrol hours, attending working bees or towing trailers. You guys are the heart and soul of our group and pretty much everyone carries some extra load.

I would like to personally express my gratitude to Natasha Tunney who works tirelessly behind and in front of the scenes to ensure our section runs in an organised manner, crews get entered, organises gear towing, as well as holding a key office bearing position with the ASRL! Tash demonstrated her strong commitment to the club and did a great job managing the large workload that comes with this position

The commitment of our volunteers in leading such a strong membership base at Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club is what keeps this club ticking. I look forward to seeing these efforts continue as we work towards Worlds in 2018

Glenelg SLSC has provided water cover for this swim since it began. However, for the past two years, the Club has joined forces more closely with the swim’s organisers, Adelaide Masters Swimming Club, and it is now a joint event. It has the potential to be a significant fundraiser for Glenelg.

While Adelaide Masters is still responsible for overall organisation, Glenelg has more capability to promote it and help to grow it. The 2015 swim had over 200 entries, including a number from interstate, in the 3 categories: 1km, 2km and 5km. With good promotion, some sponsorship, and more lifesaver participation, the swim could double in size and make a quite substantial contribution to Glenelg’s revenue. Already we are working to find a way to include lifesavers aged 13-17 in the race (Masters Swimming limits swims to adults). Given Glenelg’s reputation as Adelaide’s premier beach, and given the holiday atmosphere of the week between Christmas and New Year, there is no reason why we can’t make this a must-do event on the lifesaving calendar. Any Glenelg member who can assist with planning, promotion ideas and implementation, finding sponsors, or other support, please speak with Georgie or Sue Graebner. And, of course, the volunteers who provide water cover on the day are still vital.

Hopefully next year’s report will include details of the biggest and best Proclamation Classic yet!

Some great highlights with Leigh Bowbridge going in every event he could find and bringing home the points for Glenelg on most occasions. Our females were light on this year however Kate Dobie was a stand out in her events finishing with many placings on the day.

The team events were held in good conditions early however the wind came up and really made it tough for the masters teams. Our ski teams were in the medals across all age groups whilst our swim teams also came in with some top 3 placings. Unfortunately we did not have any female teams however we are working on this area so that we can be a force in the female area in years to come. A highlight of the day was the 60-64 Board Rescue with Leigh Bowbridge and Dave Hutchison who swam out to the cans, or thats what he was suppose to do and started heading to Stansbury instead of straight to his can... the call from the tent by Michael Dobie was "Someone should have called specsavers" - the lads recovered and ended up in the placings

Great to see Shane Daw making the trip over from Sydney to compete and also first time master Ben Warr.

Masters Boats we had two crews representing Glenelg, 140 Womens & 220 Womens.

140 Womens Crew ( SilverMedal )Natasha Tunney, Gina Bell, Georgie Cole, Jaymi Bowyer & Greg Daw

220 Womens Crew ( Gold Medal )Suzie Macauley, Lisa Harvey, Sara Dumican, Sue Higgins, Kath Mcarthy & Anjie Collins

Our overall result was 7th.

- Davina ArmstrongInourGlenelgcommunitythereareeffortsofmanywhosupporttherunningofthiswonderfulClubofours.

Externally we have the support of patrons who come for a drink and meal and this enjoyment financially supports the club. We also have our growing social members who spend $70 a year on their membership. Looking further afield, the efforts of our Liberal and now Independent Member for Morphett, Duncan Mcfetridge and our local councillor Ken Oneill helps with logistics and planning, and Mayor Steve Patterson with all our Holdfast Council matters. We also are building a great sponsor and suppliers base. Of course, and most importantly, we have our members and their families. Within our Club there is a silent army of people who are propelling the Club along. Coaching, Planning, training, managing, reporting, financials, equipment, training, competition, merchandise, training, volunteering, more training and competition, special events – wow there were a lot of special events this year….. and then roughly 25 hours on average per person patrolling at Glenelg. In regards to the Remeljej, one person has significantly and often silently but often loudly supported so many different areas – most of which I’ve touched upon already – supporting the Surf Life Saving arm of the Club by; managing or supporting Club patrols, squads, competition, merchandise, budgets, notifications, reviews, weekly documentation for Surf, reports, SMS to members, lots of calls with patrolling members to manage individual requests…..the list goes on…. The effort here to support our members’ day to day activities is impressive.

The actual support stats are:

• 285patrollingmembers• Across13teams• Administrationweekinweekoutacross7months of the year of those people• Plusover250adminentriesandexplanations for prevention/first aid and rescues, SMS Reminders each week for 7 months plus the prework organisation.• RegularAdminmeetingswithsurf• Enteringof5,000patrolhours• Assistingcoordinationofevents, aswellasown patrolling hours.

Remeljej Trophy REMELJEJ RECIPIENT 2016-17

To do this job you have to have the patience of a saint, fabulous memory, be articulate, attention to detail, and most importantly create fear in those who are even fleetingly contemplating missing a patrol......

CongratulationstoDeeArmstrong.

Surf Rescue Champions 1934-35

Throughout the season 2016-17, the Club has received the generous support and valued assistance from a number of organisations, companies and individuals. The Management Committee and all members of the Club are acutely aware that without their support and encouragement, we could not sustain the current level of community service to the beach-going public at Glenelg.

To those kind supporters of our volunteer efforts, we thank you most sincerely.
