SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
WELCOME
We can’t all be Olympians,
but at Athletics everyone can be a Champion.
Athletics is a well rounded sports experience, that teaches the
basics of running, jumping and throwing.
It is widely acclaimed that athletics is the “foundation of all sports” as the skills of
running, jumping and throwing are used in a majority of other sports.
Athletics is focused on being your best. This means that even if you are not an out-
standing athlete, you can still have fun while being active. It’s the journey that’s im-
portant, not the place.
Everyone gets to ‘have a go’ at lots of different events.
We encourage participation from children & adults of all abilities.
Tiny Tots (4 year olds) focus on developing gross motor skills through fun games
and basic athletic events.
Athletes aged 5 & over participate in varying events that encourage participation
while trying to better themselves each week.
EVENTS:
Sprints • Hurdles • Middle Distance Running
Long Jump • Race Walking • Triple Jump
Discus • Shot Put • High Jump • Javelin
Come and have a go and BE YOUR BEST!

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
MISSION STATEMENT
“To develop children & adults of all abilities by promoting positive attitudes and a
healthy lifestyle through family and community involvement in athletic activities.”
The broad philosophy of Athletics is best captured by the words of its motto
“family, fun and fitness”
Family
The cornerstone of Athletics is extensive family involvement, particularly in the
conduct of weekly activities. This active parent support of their children in active
leisure reinforces family relationships and the sense of community participation.
Participating as an adult is also very rewarding and a great role model for children.
Fun
With its focus on participation and personal involvement, athletics encourages
children & adults to enjoy healthy sporting activity. The opportunity for developing
important physical co-ordination and social interaction skills occurs in a supportive
and friendly atmosphere.
Fitness
The emphasis on developing a healthy attitude to physical fitness at an early age is
the key to adopting good physical fitness habits for life.
Athletics not only contributes to the development of foundation skills in
running, jumping and throwing that will stand children in good stead
throughout their life - it also teaches discipline, respect and teamwork.

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
COACHING & OFFICIATING
At SCAC we encourage and support parents, guardians and senior athletes pursu-
ing Coaching qualifications in athletics. Currently at our club we have Level 1 and
Level 2 coaches, together with many parents who have completed their Introduc-
tion to Couching Course and the Level 1 Officials Course.
Please see a Committee Member or visit www.salaa.org.au or
www.athleticssa.com.au for more information on Coaching & Officiating
Courses available.
Little Athletics: Introduction to Coaching Course—ITCC:
Little Athletics SA conducts Introduction to Coaching Courses throughout the year,
the majority being staged just prior to, or during the Little Athletics summer season.
The course is all practical, no exam, no previous experience necessary! The ITCC
is designed to help participants become better placed to assist children to perform
basic athletics skills. The course is great for those who want to know more about
the skills of Athletics, so that they may help to coach children, assist at Little
Athletics Centres or prepare students for school athletics carnivals. Participants will
be shown how to introduce and teach the fundamentals of each Little Athletics
event to beginners. Length: 1 day course - approx. 6 hours. Cost: $75 per
participant (must be 16 years +). A comprehensive coaching manual is available for
an additional $35.00.
Level 1—Community Athletics Coach:
This is the entry level for all Accredited Athletic Coaches. The fundamental skills of
running, jumping & throwing are introduced as well as exploring how to engage
athletes in long term participation and how to coach skills to beginner athletes. This
qualification is certified by the Australian Sports Commission and allows
participants to be nationally accredited as a community coach which is transferable
to other sports engaging in the community coach program. The course includes
one day of face to face training as well as the online Beginning Coach General
Principals course.
12
SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
COACHING & OFFICIATING CONT’D
Level 2—Intermediate Club Coach:
The Level 2 Intermediate Club Coach Course is the next progression from Level 1
Community Athletics Coach course and further develops coaches understanding of
how to coach fundamental skills and drills. This level supports coaches to
understand the basic technical models for the Track & Field events held at club
and school level competitions. In addition, coaches are introduced to training
principles and components of fitness and are introduced to the concepts of
preparing and evaluating training sessions.
Level 2– Advanced Coach Event Group Specific:
Level 2 Advanced Coach gives coaches the opportunity to specialize in an event
group of Sprints, Relays & Hurdles, Middle Distance, Jumps, Throws or Walks. In
addition to further exploring the technical model of the event group, the basics of
body weight strength & conditioning and program planning is taught.
13
SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
Accredited Programs (see: www.salaa.org.au)
Officials are very important to the effective functioning of Athletics in South
Australia. The primary role of Officials is to oversee athletics competition by
conducting events through the enforcement of the specific rules of the particular
competition and the rules of the IAAF. Given the diversity of athletics, there are a
large number of different roles and positions that are available to officials. Some
require technical knowledge and experiences, whilst others are fairly basic and
require limited understanding of athletics. For example, working in photo finish
requires training, whereas raking a long jump pit obviously requires virtually no
experience.
In short, there is something for everyone, no matter your level of experience with
athletics. Officiating within the South Australian Athletics competition is flexible.
Registered Officials can attend as many or as few events based on their
circumstances. Even if you are only able to come to one or two events per year or
help out once a month, there is an opportunity for you to be a part of the South
Australian Athletics community.
Officiating in South Australia can provide many benefits including:
• The opportunity to remain involved in athletics if a person is unable to compete
• An opportunity to socialise with like-minded individuals
• The ability to be involved in, and give back to, a community focused
organisation
• Assist athletes to perform at their best and achieve their goals and dreams
• The opportunity to officiate at National Athletics Events and Championships
• The ability to progress to International competition such as the Olympic Games
for those with greater ambitions
Level 1 Officials Course: This is all done online and covers all events at athletics.
This gives a fantastic background to all the rules and regulations required to
officiate at the club level and also at SA Athletics Stadium. After each event is
complete you can print off a certificate. From there you can progress to Level 2
onwards should you wish to do so.

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
CLUB CAPTAINS & VICE CAPTAINS
The Committee of the SCAC believes strongly in supporting a family environment
promoting unity amongst our Athletes. Club Captains and Vice Captains assist in
achieving this. Club Captains and Vice Captains are senior athletes who are
representative of the athletes of the Centre, who promote leadership, and uphold
and demonstrate the values of Athletics within the Centre and the community. Upon
the completion of each season, Club Captain names are engraved on the SCAC
Captains’ Perpetual Trophy (retained at the club), and Club Captains are presented
a trophy and provided with a reference letter outlining their role (on request).
Requirements: There are minimum requirements for an individual to be eligible for
nomination to become a Club Captain or Vice Captain, these are: Under 14, Under
15, Under 16 or Under 17 Age Group member; Has had continuous membership at
the Centre for at least two seasons; Has demonstrated excellent behaviour,
leadership and sportsmanship.
Process for selection: All Committee members may nominate a boy and a girl
based on the requirements listed above and the following criteria: Excellent
sportsmanship; Attendance over the season; Athletic achievement; Good
behaviour; Positive leadership; Centre representation. The Committee will consider
all nominations, and if necessary take a vote to determine one boy and one girl.
Two girls or two boys may also be considered depending on membership in a
certain year.
Roles and Responsibilities of Captains: Club Captains and Vice Captains are
expected to undertake the following role as representative of the Athletes: Promote
excellent sportsmanship across all ages at the Centre; Promote and encourage all
athletes at the Centre to represent South Coast at all levels of competition;
Demonstrate leadership as a role model to junior members of the Centre; Promote
the values of the Centre and Athletics – Fun, Family and Fitness; Provide a conduit
and liaison between athletes and the Committee by representing the needs of the
athletes in support of all athletes reaching their full potential.

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
VOLUNTEERING
It is a condition of registration that a parent or guardian MUST be in attendance and assist in the
running of the meet when their children are present. This requirement is imposed on the club for
insurance and liability reasons. If there are insufficient parents for a group of athletes, they will be
unable to take part in the events.
The great news is that you do not need to know anything about athletics to help out. Most tasks
that need to be performed at Athletics meets are fairly easy, and your children will enjoy seeing
you get involved. Some areas of specific help that you can assist the club with include:
measuring; spiking; recording; age group manager; starting gun; time keeping; cooking the BBQ;
pack up and set up.
A Committee member or Age Group Manager will always be available to help you if you are
unsure.
CODE OF CONDUCT—PARENTS
• Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing, do
not force them.
• Focus upon the child’s effort rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the
child in setting realistic goals related to his/her ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
• Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of eachevent
is accepted without undue disappointment.
• Encourage children to participate according to the rules.
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing an event.
• Remember that children are involved with Athletics for their own enjoyment, not yours.
• f you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than
questioning the official’s judgement & honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their
time & effort for free for your child’s involvement.
• Support all efforts to remove verbal & physical abuse at Athletic activities.
• Recognise the value and importance of being a volunteer! We all give time and resourcest o
provide recreational activities for children and deserve your support.
• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour, by not harassing athletes, coaches and officials,
smoking on the arena or being intoxicated.
20
SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
CONDUCT & BEHAVIOUR—ATHLETE
• Play by the rules.
• Never argue with an official. If you disagree, ask your Age Group Manager or
supervising adult to deal with the matter.
• Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, parents or other athletes, delib-
erately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted in
our club.
• Work equally hard for yourself and your club. Your Centre performances will
benefit.
• Be a good sport. Applaud all good results whether they be by your club or
opponent.
• Treat all athletes as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or
take unfair advantage of another athlete. Age Group Managers have the right
to sit you out of an event should they identify this sort of behaviour.
• Cooperate with your coach, club mates and other participants. Without them
there would be no club.
• Participate in Athletics for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and
coaches. Great friends can be made at athletics.

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
This policy was written to demonstrate the strong commitment of the management
to child safety and establishing and maintaining child safe and child friendly
environments.
Commitment to child safety
All children who come to the Club have a right to feel and be safe. The Club is
committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people accessing
our services and the welfare of the children in our care will always be our first
priority. We aim to create a child safe and child friendly environment where children
feel safe and have fun. This policy was developed in collaboration with all
volunteers, the children who use our services and their parents. It applies to all
employees, volunteers, children and individuals involved in the organisation.
Children’s rights to safety and participation
Club volunteers encourage children to express their views and make suggestions,
especially on matters that directly affect children. We actively encourage all
children who use our services to ‘have a say’ about those things that are important
to them. We value diversity and do not tolerate any discriminatory practices. We
teach children about what they can do if they feel unsafe. We listen to and act on
any concerns children, or their parents, raise with us.
Volunteers
The Club seeks to attract and retain the best volunteers. Volunteers are screened
(police checks) and the club provides support and supervision so people feel
valued, respected and fairly treated
Reporting and responding to suspected abuse and neglect
We will not tolerate incidents of child abuse, physical, emotional, sexual or through
neglect. Volunteers must notify the Child Abuse Report Line on 131478 as soon as
practicable if they have a reasonable suspicion that a child has been or is being
abused or neglected.

SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
SALAA POLICIES
SALAA policies can be found at: www.salaa.org.au including:
• SunSmart Policy: Sunscreen is available at the club. Hats must be worn while athletes are
not competing. SCAC will not be held responsible for any child who is not suitably protected
from the sun.
• Smoke Free Policy: The SA Little Athletics Association Inc. and Affiliated Centres and Clubs
recognise that passive smoking is hazardous to health and that non-smokers should be
protected from the involuntary inhalation of tobacco smoke. Under the terms of our
agreement with Victor Harbor R-7 School, smoking is NOT PERMITTED on the
grounds. If you need to smoke then please move off the school grounds to do so.
SCAC POLICIES
• Photography Policy: SCAC is aware of the potential risks linked to the use of photographs
and other images of young people in sport. As a club we acknowledge that appropriate
steps must be taken to ensure the acquisition or display of images containing young people
are not misused or accessed by unauthorized personnel.
Parents and Athletes at the club are advised that during the course of the season photos of
athletes may be used for the clubs web page, advertising or for other promotional reasons.
Should for any reason you not approve of the publication of this material please advise the
club prior to the commencement of the season. Should any image be placed on the internet
that you are not happy with please request the removal of said image by advising a
member of the Committee.
• Blood Guidelines: In today’s society, a blood policy exists in the majority of sports due to a
number of blood borne infectious diseases which can be transmitted; the most serious of
these include Hepatitis and HIV.
The potential for the spread of infection when contact is made has been widely recognised
for many years. As a consequence of heightened public awareness and anxieties,
increasing attention has been given to the possible risks of acquiring a blood borne disease
where spillage of blood may occur. This policy has been put in place to protect injured
athletes, their competitors and Athletics Officials.
23
SOUTH COAST ATHLETICS
SCAC POLICIES CONT’D
Weather:
HEAT: SCAC meets will be automatically cancelled if the temperature forecast for Victor
Harbor by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, as published at 5.00pm on the Thursday
prior to the competition, is 37° or above. The forecast can be accessed via the Bureau of
Meteorology website (http://www.bom.gov.au).
RAIN: Athletics will also be cancelled for the evening if it is raining heavily/steadily, or
there is lightening, at the time of start (4.30pm) on a Friday evening, or the ground is un-
suitable for the event (e.g. waterlogged).
HOW WILL YOU BE NOTIFIED? When a meet is cancelled, we will SMS you as soon as
practical. Please ensure your mobile number is correctly recorded on your registration
form.
In addition, weather updates will be posted on our FACEBOOK page:
www.facebook.com/SouthCoastLittleAths.
Health & Accident:
SCAC is run by volunteers. Apart from very basic first aid for minor injuries, SCAC is not
able to manage injuries or illness suffered by athletes. It is for this reason (as well as to
supervise and assist athletes when competing, before, after and between events), SCAC
insists on parents/guardians of athletes to be present at the oval for meets at all times.
If your child has a medical condition which may require urgent treat-ment or medication
(e.g. Asthma, bee sting, allergy, epilepsy, or the like), parents are required to take respon-
sibility of management of that condition and have the necessary medication available at
SCAC meets. If your child requires treatment for an injury or medi-cation for any medical
condition, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to seek or supply such medica-
tion/treatment as necessary.
Drinks and Snacks:
As the season runs during the summer months, please ensure that your child has a drink
at each meet and encourage them to drink regularly between events. Some children also
require snacks between events, especially when expending lots of energy. Please provide
an appropriate snack for your child if necessary. The Club is endeavouring to follow a
Healthy Eating Policy, so please ensure snacks are as healthy as possible.
