We ask this through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives andreigns with you in the unity of The Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

All sit for the readings.

THE WORD OF GOD

At the conclusion of each Reading:Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God.

FIRST READING The Mass on the World

Since once again, Lord - though this time not in the forests of the Aisne but in the steppes of Asia- I have neither bread, nor wine, nor altar, I will raise myself beyond these symbols, up to thepure majesty of the real itself; I, your priest, will make the whole earth my altar and on it willoffer you all the labors and sufferings of the world.

Over there, on the horizon, the sun has just touched with light the outermost fringe of the easternsky. Once again, beneath this moving sheet of fire, the living surface of the earth wakes andtrembles, and once again begins its fearful travail. I will place on my paten, O God, the harvest tobe won by this renewal of labor. Into my chalice I shall pour all the sap which is to be pressed outthis day from the earth's fruits.

My paten and my chalice are the depths of a soul laid widely open to all the forces which in amoment will rise up from every corner of the earth and converge upon the Spirit. Grant me theremembrance and the mystic presence of all those whom the light is now awakening to the newday. One by one, Lord, I see and I love all those whom you have given me to sustain and charmmy life. One by one also I number all those who make up that other beloved family which hasgradually surrounded me, its unity fashioned out of the most disparate elements, with affinities ofthe heart, of scientific research and of thought. And again one by one - more vaguely it is true, yet all-inclusively - I call before me the whole vast anonymous army of living humanity; thosewho surround me and support me though I do not know them; those who come, and those whogo; above all, those who in office, laboratory and factory, through their vision of truth or despitetheir error, truly believe in the progress of earthly reality and who today will take up again theirimpassioned pursuit of the light.........Receive, O Lord, this all-embracing host which your wholecreation, moved by your magnetism, offers you at this dawn of a new day. This bread, our toil, isof itself, I know, but an immense fragmentation; this wine, our pain, is no more, I know, than adraught that dissolves. Yet in the very depths of this formless mass you have implanted - and thisI am sure of, for I sense it - a desire, irresistible, hallowing, which makes us cry out, believer andunbeliever alike: 'Lord, make us one.'

PSALM 46 (*all singing) Deus noster refugium Benjamin Hutto

1 God is our | refuge • and | strength, * a very | present | help in | trouble.

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the | earth be | moved, * and though the mountains be toppled | into • the | depths • of the | sea;

3 Though its waters | rage and | foam, * and though the mountains | tremble | at its | tumult.

4 The Lord of | hosts is | with us; * the God of | Jacob | is our | stronghold.

5 There is a river whose streams make glad the | city • of | God, * the holy habitation | of the | Most | High.

6 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be | over|thrown; * God shall help her | at the | break of | day.

7 The nations make much ado, and the | kingdoms • are | shaken; * God has spoken, and the | earth shall | melt a|way.

8 The Lord of | hosts is | with us; * the God of | Jacob | is our | stronghold.

9 Come now and look upon the | works • of the | Lord, * what awesome | things • he has | done on | earth.

10 It is he who makes war to cease in | all the | world; * he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and | burns the | shields with | fire.

11 “Be still, then, and know that | I am | God; * I will be exalted among the nations; I will be ex|alted | in the | earth.”

12 The Lord of | hosts is | with us; * the God of | Jacob | is our | stronghold.

SECOND READING Colossians 1:15-20

Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him allthings in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thronesor dominions or rulers or powers–all things have been created through him and for him.He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of thebody, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might cometo have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth orin heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

All who are able, stand as the Gospel Book is carried in procession.

*CHANT (all singing) “Kol Hanishama” Patty Goldstick

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 1:1-18

Congregation: Glory to you, Lord Christ

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Hewas in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without himnot one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life wasthe light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did notovercome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as awitness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was notthe light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being throughhim; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own peopledid not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gavepower to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the fleshor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, andwe have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (Johntestified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after meranks ahead of me because he was before me.’”) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth camethrough Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close tothe Father’s heart, who has made him known.

SERMON

All stand for the Creed, and remain standing or kneel for the prayers.

THE CREED (all in unison) Adapted from Tírechán's CreedAD 670 (Dublin), Ludwig Bieler)

Our God is the Creator of all humans, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Creator of sea and rivers, the Creator of the sun and moon, the Creator of all the heavenly bodies, the Creator of the lofty mountains, the Creator of the lowly valleys.God is above the heavens, and beneath the heavens.Heaven and earth and sea, and everything that is in them, such is the Creator’s abode. The Creator inspires all things and gives life to all things, standing above all things and beneath all things.God enlightens the light of the sun and strengthens the light of the night and the stars. Wells were created in the arid land and dry islands in the sea, and stars were placed in the service of the greater lights.God has a Son who is co-eternal with the Creator; and similar in all respects to the Creator; and neither is the Son younger than the Creator, nor is the Creator older than the Son; and the Holy Spirit breathes in them. And the Creator and the Son and Holy Spirit are inseparable.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer B, BCP p. 367

The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give God thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continuesIt is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all thecompany of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Page 12: Season of Creation 2016 - ssam.org€¦ · The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew The Reverend David T. Andrews, Jr., Rector Season of Creation 2016 Holy Eucharist November

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known tous in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through theprophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last daysyou sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of theworld.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him,you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death intolife.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he hadgiven thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This ismy Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper hetook the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drinkthis, all of you:

This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for theforgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continuesAnd we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting toyou, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be theSacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to yourSon in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the HolySpirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring usto that heavenly country where, with Blessed Andrew and Matthew all your saints, wemay enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ ourLord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory isyours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
