At last, the long awaited sequel to The Carol Bookis here! In conjunction with its much

praised predecessor, Season by Seasonprovides accessible and attractive music for all theseasons, festivals and occasions of the church year. Everything the church or school choir

needs to celebrate the changing seasons is now in just two photocopiable resources. All the features that made The Carol Book so appealing to its users are mirrored in Seasonby Season: uncomplicated settings and arrangements, simple keys whenever possible, a wide

range of variants on the accompanying CD-ROM such that any choir, whether singingin unison, two, three or four parts will find a thrilling range of options from which to

choose. It is your choice whether to sing in English or Latin, whether to use an original

text or a sensitive revision in more modern English. And as before, we have tried to keeptenor parts within the range of baritones; and realising that the three-part versions of

carols (with just one mens part) were a particularly popular feature of The Carol Book,

we have offered an extended set of options for SAB choirs in this new collection.

To save photocopying costs we have offered several anthems with choral parts alone and

accompaniments alone (both fully cued) in addition of course to the full version.

We are, as previously, indebted to some distinguished authors and composers for writingnew texts and settings for us; and to several publishers for allowing us to include their

material. Our further thanks are due to Ben Lamb and Sarum Voices for recording elevenitems from the collection for us. These can be found on the CD-ROM. Most of all we are

grateful to Tim Ruffer of The Royal School of Church Music for encouraging us in this

further venture and helping us bring it to fruition.

    Come with newly written anthems,

craft your finest psalm or song.

May Season by Seasonenable choirs everywhere to sing ever more joyfully the praise ofGod revealed to us in his Son, Jesus Christ, and ever inspiring us by his Holy Spirit.

    USING SEASON BY SEASON

The material in Season by Seasonis arranged in chronological order, beginning with Lentand finishing with Remembrance. Lesser occasions and festivals, including those without

a fixed date, appear in the latter part of the collection.

Using the numerical index as a guide, it is therefore easy to choose items suitable for a

particular festival or season. (Some items are suitable for more than one occasion, andthe detailed index listings will alert you to extra possibilities.)

At the bottom of the first page of many items in the hard copy there is a list of alternativeversions available on the CD-ROM.

The hard copy will typically offer the full SATB version in the key recommended by

    the editors.

Alternative versions on the CD-ROM appear for a variety of reasons, offering some

or all of the following: three-part, two-part or unison versions,

    choral parts without accompaniment,

    accompaniment without choral parts,

arrangements of organ parts for piano or keyboard,

items are offered in higher or lower keys,

items appear with the option of a modernised text,

in a few cases the original Latin version of the text.

The CD-ROM is therefore an essential component, since it is probable that many userswill find the precise arrangement they want on the CD-ROM rather than in the hard

copy. Some of the CD-ROM material simply enables choirs to cut down on their use ofpaper; but those who seek material for choirs without men, or choirs with few men who

need SAB arrangements will find the CD-ROM versions indispensable.

Those who have such special needs may prefer to work in a different way, and consult theindexes listing three-part, two-part and unison arrangements.

The CD-ROM also has the texts of all items, formatted to make them easy to copy on to

    service orders.
