There are employees feverishly decorating; volunteers delivering brightly colored packages; and residents preparing for another festive holiday season. We try to recreate the memories of holidays gone by with traditions like the unpacking of treasured ornaments passed down from year to year, with some of the decorations from friends and families very dear to our hearts. We fill the air with the scent of just baked cookies and the unforgettable smell of freshly cut boughs of evergreen. I can already hear the carolers as they gather in the Great Room, singing beside our beautiful Christmas tree. Residents will be chatting quietly as they sip holiday punch and enjoy a plate full of Chef Vinny’s special gingerbread cookies. This is truly the most wonderful time of the year. This time each year we all get so busy. It is such a great feeling to be able to slow down just for a little while, sit back and reflect on the previous year with those who mean so much to us. We want everyone to have a blessed and heart-filled December. We have so many different residents here at Belmont Village who add to the wonderful make-up we call home. We have residents who have been here for years and love it here, and that makes me so happy, knowing we are meeting needs and providing services. We also have a variety of activities this month that provide excitement and entertainment for our residents. So don’t forget to check out our calendar to see what activity is coming up next so that you can attend. We will see you at the Holiday Party on the 15th. TIPS FOR THECHALLENGING

WINTER MONTHSThe winter months can make

life challenging for everyone. Hereare some helpful tips forpreventing common winterdangers that the elderlypopulation face:

Avoid Slipping on Ice Icy,snowy roads and sidewalks makeit easy to slip and fall. Often thesefalls cause major injuries such aship and wrist fractures, headtrauma and major lacerations.Make sure to wear shoes withgood traction and non-skid soles.

Dress for Warmth Coldtemperatures can lead to frostbiteand hypothermia - a conditionwhere the body temperature dipstoo low. Going outside? Dress inlayers and wear warm socks, aheavy coat, a warm hat, glovesand a scarf (to cover your mouthand protect your lungs). In verycold temperatures, cover allexposed skin.

Fight Wintertime DepressionBecause it can be difficult anddangerous to get around, manyseniors have less contact with

others during cold months. Tohelp avoid feelings of lonelinessand isolation, family membersshould check in on seniors asoften as possible; even a short, daily phone call can make a bigdifference.

Check the Car Driving duringthe winter can be hazardous foranyone, but it is especiallydangerous for older people. Getyour car serviced beforewintertime hits. Checking thingslike the oil, tires, battery andwipers can make a big differenceon winter roads.

Wintertime certainly poseschallenges for seniors, but with abit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy andexperience the joys of springtimesoon enough.

Hot Cocoa and HealthA cup or two of cocoa each day

may do more than ward off achill. Cocoa is rich inantioxidants, potassium, iron andother nutrients. Hot chocolate isalso chock-full of flavonoids, powerful compounds that arebeing studied for their link tofighting cancer, preventing strokeand delaying dementia and othercognitive problems. Plus, sippingthis sweet treat can make you feelbetter—not only because thedrink is delicious, but alsobecause it raises the body’s levelsof serotonin, which producesendorphins and can banish abad mood.

A White House HolidayDuring the holidays, few halls

will be decked better than those at1600 Pennsylvania Ave. inWashington, D.C. Since it wasbuilt, the White House hascelebrated yuletide traditionsranging from simple tospectacular.

In the 19th century, firstfamilies decorated the home withgreenery and celebrated the seasonprivately. The first publiccelebration came in 1923, whenPresident Calvin Coolidge lit thefirst National Christmas Tree onthe White House Ellipse. Thistradition is now part of themonthlong Pageant of Peace.Other pageant highlights includethe first family lighting theNational Menorah.

The custom of first ladiesdecorating an official WhiteHouse tree in the Blue Roombegan in 1929 with President

Herbert Hoover’s wife, Lou. Firstlady Jackie Kennedy added to thetradition in 1962 by selecting anannual theme for the tree. Sincethen, tree themes have includedflowers, American artists andanimals.

White House chefs join in thedecorating. Since the 1960s, theyhave created a replica of the WhiteHouse made of gingerbreadcovered with white chocolate, which is displayed in the StateDining Room.

The first family also sends outan official greeting card each year.Images on past cards have rangedfrom the presidential seal tocopies of famous artwork.
