SEC 2 - THE SIMPLEST MATTER
The students will:• Describe the relationship
between the elements and the periodic table.
• Explain the meaning of atomic mass and atomic number.
• Contrast Metals, Metalloids and non metals.
Terms to Know:• Atomic number• Mass number• Atomic mass• Metals• Non metals• Metalloids
ELEMENTS (118 )
Natural Elements(90 known)
Synthetic Elements(man made)
PERIODIC TABLE:• A chart of elements.• Helps scientist organize and display
elements.• Use Chemical Symbols• Arranged according to their properties.
Atomic Number:-The number of proton in the nucleus of an atom.
Mass Number:-The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Mass:- The weighted average mass of isotopes of an element. (μ)
Isotopes:Atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons.
CLASSIFICATION OF ELEMENTS
METALS-shiny/metallic luster-good conductors of heat & electricity-solid @ room temp. except mercury.-malleable-ductile
NON-METALS-Dull-poor conductors-Gases @ room temp. except bromine.-Brittle-Essentials to chemicals of life.-97% body
METALLOIDS-share characteristics of metals & non metals-not as good as metals in conducting electricity.
NON METALS
METALLOIDS

SEC 3 COMPOUNDS AND MIXTURES
Students will:• Identify the characteristics of a
compound through observation.(Mini Lab)
• Compare and Contrast different types of mixtures.
TERMS TO KNOW:
• Substance• Compound
Substance:
-matter that has the same composition and properties throughout.
-can be an element (Ex. Hydrogen – H) or compound (Ex. H2O)
Compound: - a substance whose smallest unit is made up
of atoms of more than one element bonded together.
Ex. Hydrogen Peroxide ( H2O2)•
Water (H2O)
MIXTURES- a combination of two or more substances (element or compound)that has not formed a new substance.
2 kinds of Mixtures:Heterogeneous Mixture (different)Homogeneous Mixture (same)
Ways to separate Mixtures:
HeatingFilteringManual
